I've been refilling my Pentel Brush Pen for years with a syringe. It's much cleaner for carrying around than those water brushes, which often leak within the cap. I bought just one package of 4 extra cartridges. I haven't been using the empties that much, as I just refill those in the pen. But someday I'll figure out a way to seal the refills so I can carry them around. Either with wax, or hot glue. Pentel's brush pen is the only fine brush that I've ever tried that can last more than a year of very careful use without losing it's sharpness. I have two right now, purchased years apart, and I cannot tell which one is older. Considering its great tips and durability, the higher cost is not an issue, it means savings in money, time and patience!

Rather than spending a fortune going through Amazon or an art supply store, you can buy these Pentel Aquash for about GBP2 for a set of 3 from China if you look on Ebay. That gives you a small, medium and large (not broad). Then you refill them either with watercolours, or fountain pen ink. I refill ink cartridges with a diabetics hypodermic needle using fountain pen ink simply because I cannot get the art supplies I want where I live in Australia.
@Craftsworldsocial9 жыл бұрын
you know you can fill up the cartridges in the pentel brush pen with any fountain pen ink. It costs like 10$ for a whole bottle as opposed to 5 little cartridges.

If you want something thats 100% water and copic proof, indian or acrylic inks are great for this. The pentel color brush can release more ink if you squeeze it like a water brush. Also when you first break the seal you're supposed to hold it or store it cap side down to get the ink flowing.
@GeekeryMade9 жыл бұрын
I think the thing I like the best about this idea is it lets you mix your own colors up as well, so you can have completely custom pens. And there are a couple places that you can buy them in bulk if you want a whole set.

the kuretake zig clean color brushes can be refilled. you just have to take the plastic part that holds the nib off and add ink with a syringe or an eyedropper so it is absorbed by the little tube inside (like the ones inside markers). it is really easy to do, and because the tips are bristles instead of a felt tip it wont fray as easily .
@sugarsweetdeath9 жыл бұрын
Ive found that you can even just refill the pentel ink cartridge with a pipette with what ever ink you want. I refilled mine with Higgins black magic and I've had no problem with any drying in the tube or anything. Just an easy way to save yourself some money over buying new cartridges since you get multiple refills for a bottle over the ridiculous price for the official refills.
@dragonsong868 жыл бұрын
I love doing this, but I have run into a couple small issues. I've used Higgins inks, and they do clog the brush from time to time. Just gotta strip em down and clean em out, but it's pretty annoying. Also I've noticed that if I have them in a hot car, even for a short time, I have to rush them to the nearest sink and do some first aid, because the ink leaks out into the cap.
@wolfsf20126 жыл бұрын
dragonsong86 idk if you’ll see this or not but is the ink, Indian ink? Because I have a cheap water brush (from eBay but it leaks a bit trying to find a new one) and if I didn’t use it regularly, I had Indian ink in there, it would clog up and not run right after the unclogging. But she did say fountain/pen ink and that’s not suppose to clog up?

This is a really cool idea! I’d love to give it a go, however, do you know if it would work with a pigmented liquid watercolour, like Dr P. H. Martin? My concern would be that it might clog or dry onto the nib, and I don’t have any dye-based inks to use instead. Any advice would be much appreciated!
@deactivated35847 жыл бұрын
I did this, but I used India ink. It doesn't really work that well because india ink is a different thickness than writing ink... so it was a bit messy. It works okay, but lining drawings isn't that ideal. Though messy, blocking out areas works well. Just sharing my experience for others :)

I used different degrees of concentration of the Winsor and Newton black calligraphy ink, which I believe isn't even waterproof. I was wondering if you encountered a similar problem or if you know how I could fix it. Thanks! uwu
@vwood28 жыл бұрын
Robin :3 That's bad luck! Even though W&N advertises the calligraphy ink as washable, it really isn't. It's meant for dip pens. Fountain pen ink is created to remain soluble and won't clog water-brushes. The brand Jellie Bee is showing is Diamine but any brand of regular fountain pen ink will work. Unfortunately, they are dye based so will fade with light. ......( Good news is that the Pental Arts Pocket Brush is lightfast, however as Jallie Bee says, just available in black).
@Mr.StarktheShark8 жыл бұрын
If lightfastness is a big issue, you can always use a matte spray to protect your drawing once it is finished. No perfect, but will easily triple the lifespan of the piece before it begins to fade.

RannPNut Yes sorry I was the one to answer! Uh huh, you can in fact fill the water brush with any color or type of ink you want. It is also great for watercolor art. Just fill it with water/ink and the water/ink won't just come out by surprise; you have to press/pinch the compartment for the water or ink to come out. Some waterbrushes dispense the liquid from the side and some to the brush part itself.

The Pentel Squash comes in 3 sizes. Yours is the small, and there is a medium that about the size of the one with the orange ink in this video and the large that is just a little. bit bigger. Maybe try amazon.co.uk to see if you find them. Hope this helps!

do they work with Copic refills? I want to start getting into Copic but the sketch are so expensive so was thinking of getting refills and trying this with the water brush (how easy is the brush to clean?) or getting refills and just dipping a brush into them. Lets face it you get way more ink in the refills than the makers for around the same price.

You know what, that sounds like an experiment that would either yield some crazy results or be entirely disastrous, I might try it one day haha.

I have a question, since I live in the Netherlands, I can't find an online store that sells Diamine ink without having to pay three times the price of the ink itself for shipping it. I want to make sure that the ink I use will work with Copic markers, because I don't want to ruin the markers. Can I use Indian ink or is it not alcohol proof? I hope you can help me because all the Dutch (online) stores only sell 8 colors of Diamine ink and black isn't one of them. (It's like a 150 year celebration edition) I hope you can help me!

+Annemarte Beens Diamine has always worked nicely with Alcohol ink, but always let it dry before trying anything! Indian ink should be fine too, but I don't think I've used my Indian or Japanese traditional inks with Copic yet, but I'll most likely do an updated inking video :)

Hi Jelly ! Did you put full pure ink in the brushes or can you put also diluted china ink too ? (because I tried once and it didn't work as well as I thought it would :/)
@JellieBee9 жыл бұрын
Kawell et ses Livres (Coda-leia) I did put ink straight in without diluting it :) it might be because the ink I bought was already quite thin, as it's a cheaper ink :B

do you think you could do this with copic ink in a brush pen and also do you think it would save you any money? thanks so much!
@JellieBee9 жыл бұрын
+bookisland I dont think so as Copic ink would need a felt based nib, rather than a bristle one :)

i’ve been wanting brush pens for soooo longㅠㅠ i finally asked my mom and she didn’t wanna buy them because i ‘wouldnt use them anyway’

is it possible to clean the brush completely (nib and all) and switch to another ink color if you run out and can't find the color or do you need to buy a new water brush?
@dragonsong868 жыл бұрын
I was going to do this, but I've found that the ink usually stains the brush, and sometimes the barrel. Not sure if any color would carry over and muddy the new ink, but since they are so cheap I decided not to risk it.

dragonsong86 good to know thanks ^^

The nibs stain similar to colorless Copic blender, but as long as it is cleaned until the water runs clear it will not muddy new colors used afterwards. The bristles are synthetic and so dye adheres to them moreso than natural bristles.
