Looks perfect. You need to look past the flakey paint and terrible interior. As Mike says, if it’s structurally sound, it’s a great platform to start from. For about $50-60K USD, it would become good as new.

It definitely can, especially if you aren't an A&P. Engine overhaul is $20-$30K, paint up to $20k, interior probably $5k-$8k and panel (this one looks solid though) can be anything from minor $2k to $50k for a full upgrade. It would be easy to sink $60-$90k in this bird at retail rates.

The only thing more expensive than a cheap boat is a cheap airplane. A glance at that nose strut, it is an early 1960s version. Parts can be expensive and hard to find. One really needs to be an A&P to be able to do the work. May be better off shopping for a already nice one.

Hi Mojo, interesting story here. I am taking lessons at French Valley. This 210 sat 3 rows behind the 172 we rent at EFI flight school. It was in bad shape sitting on 3 flat tires. I checked the N number and with a little computer work I had the owners phone number, I called her but got her son on the phone who wouldn't pass the phone to mom, sounded like an adult son. Anyway I gave up on it, kinda a weird deal. Nice to see it's getting the love it deserves. I believe it is a 1967 model? Take care MJ. Maybe I'll see you around F70 sometime.

Fixing up cars as a hobby taught me that...unless you're fortunate and a little lucky...the most expensive Mercedes you can buy is a cheap one! Hope this is an exception and ends up fine- but a long period of outdoor storage is not an airplanes friend! Lots of gremlins that may be waiting to be awaken from their slumber. Gyros, radios, and all kinds of connections. And yes if not already done Please check that carry through spar!

The Cessna 210 is one of the best flying "SUV" class planes ever made. It is also one of the most maintenance heavy planes as well. Many have said in the comments correctly it IS a money pit. Even Richard "Dick" Collins (RIP) said not to get one unless you have the financial muscle to keep it flying.... But if you do, and let's just assume the new owner does... What an airplane!!!! I would get one in a heart beat... buuuuut I love my house more than the plane so still shopping... Cheers! And to answer Mojo's question, yes. I did the exact same thing as the 210 owner to get my wings... bought the old bird and fixed her up. The Cessna 172 was old and beat up but flew well and got me my PPL in 7 1/2 months.

@Mike Kabakov It's a design issue, mainly with the landing gear. It's a very big heavy plane, the gear, "goose legs", was not a very great design. They require a lot to maintain. Not all gear is the same, Piper arrow or Mooney gear is pretty bullet proof. Next is the great big giant engine needed to power this big bird. Big engine, means big maint. tag. Look at a Mooney over haul vs a 210 overhaul.. Big diff.

OK, can't hold back (I have that exact year/model). If you can find one that did not got abused, you will have a fine machine on your hand. Remember this IS a high performance complex aircraft. A big step up from a FG plane you may fly (My previous plane was a 177FG). This is a retractable with the "leaf-spring" main. The gear has never failed me, but the doors are the cause of problems. Make sure you have one with the original piano hinges still in place. That tells you that the previous owner did not drop the gear at 160kts to slow the plane down (do you drop full flaps at max cruise???). The main terminal in the nose wheel (provide power to all the micro switches) should be looked after. Nutshell, if there is a problem with the gear its electric or you did not check hydraulic fluid at (every) pre-flight! There IS a handpump if everything fails. Gear-up landing, 99% pilot error. Wing-Spar AD, there was ONE incident in Australia where a highly modified, low flying, surveillance 210 lost a wing. Go read the accident report before commenting. The 210 is like the AMG G-Model, takes anything and its FAST. It's actually affordable to maintain if it's not a turbo like the one in the Vid. I fly mine 2-3 times a week. Love it! Again, it's a high-performance complex plane. The one in the Vid... needs some TLC and at that low entry (if the Spar is good) could be a money maker. The wings look worrisome though, to many wet grease spots around the inspection plates. Note, planes don't rust (Steel does), it's called corrosion (aluminum).

indeed looks like a fixed gear but it really is retractable. its a Cessna T210G build in 1967. What important is, is not the painting but the state of corrosion . with the strut less Cessnas like 177 and 210 one of the important things is the carry through spar. It connects the left and right wings together and because its a strut less wing the forces on it are high. It can suffer of fatique and corrosion problems. Look the owner knows what he is doing as the sky upholstery is taken away so the carrythrough spar can be checked

@@rafiqsaid4297 Correct, it's a retractable T (for turbocharged) 210G. Many years ago I owned T210G N6865R, just a few registration numbers away from this one. It was a great traveling machine and I loved the turbo out here in the mountainous west. However, as I recall, the 5th and 6th seats in this model were quite small, really for kids. For a full 6-seater 210, you have to go for a few (or several, can't remember) model years newer.

Wow this one looks expensive! Maintenance wise that is, I'm not sure what's going on in those wings but it looks like fuel leaks to me, I agree with what several people have committed about, corrosion would be a hugh concern for me, airplanes aren't designed to sit without some kind of maintenance. We had an old badly kept and maintained Baron come in one day for sqk and the first thing out of my manager was " just fix this one part and don't look at the rest" I almost walked down to the FSDO office! Just an example: the bottom of the wings were stained from the spars to the trailing edges, the elevator trim accuraters mount nut plates were stripped so there turned a bit and large wood screws were screwed straight into the spar!!😳, the only thing that stopped the gear was the CB popping at both ends of travel!😳😳😳

Bud, I love the content you are putting out there but this video makes me nervous. The 210 was on my short list. But it was quickly removed after doing a little research (ended up going with the Debonair). The only thing I see affordable about that aircraft is the purchase price. The wing spar AD on the 210 could potentially total a huge portion of the entire fleet. Aside from that, the landing gear is a nightmare. Google “Cessna 210 gear saddle.” You will come up with two take aways. First “AD requires them to be replaced every 1,000 hours.” Second “Nobody makes the replacement.” This is far from an affordable aircraft.

@@jamesvelvet3612 They can be as affordable as bass boats and RVs, but they need to be simpler fixed gear and naturally aspirated. Lower purchase prices, lower fuel burn, lower maintenance costs. I'm looking to buy my 1st plane in the next couple years, ~$40k purchase price and $12k-ish per year should cover up to 100hrs per year of flying including fuel, hangar, maintenance and insurance.

Suggesting that a certified aircraft that isn't older than you can be operated for the same costs as a bass boat speaks volumes about your airplane ownership experience ;-) This 210 will eat at least 5k/year just in the annual inspection!

Sorry Mike, but by making this video youre actually proving the point that aviation is expensive and airplane ownership inaccesible. This piece of junk still goes for 35k, the corrosion in the interior (and where else?), maybe the wing spar has to be replaced (30k right there), engine that had to be fixed, and the full paintjob which is going to be in the five figures as well. I would never buy an aircraft that has been sitting for a long time and looks like this because no matter how cheap the price, there is always going to be more to fix and with the way aviation is every little repair will run you into the thousands. This is not even considering hangar space or annual maintenance which is probably not going to be cheap for this aircraft either.

I'd agree. I would make this purchase if I really wanted to have the plane my way (new interior how I like, new exterior how I like, full engine tear down, etc). If you were going to do that anyways, then better to find one a little rougher. Also agree this shape can be hiding more problems.

@@cpy To be honest the only way id feel comfortable in that plane is after a full restoration anyways. But my guess is cost for that would be north of 400k at that point and a very long time to get all spare parts and work done. If i had that kind of money id probably just buy a 5 year old SR22 or DA40 and call it a day, but then again i dont really have the need for 6 seats either.

This airplane is the exact opposite of affordable. There is nothing more expensive a pilot can do than buy a cheap airplane. Every bill this airplane encounters will be massive. Problems will create more problems and it will be a huge money pit over any reasonable period of time. If you are getting into aviation and can't afford a more reasonable airplane, buying something like this would be the absolute worst move you could ever make. The worst part about airplanes like this is that by the time you've actually made nice (or even safe!) would could have just bought an airplane in good condition and saved yourself the stress and risk of refurbishing an airplane like this.

Oh c'mon, this thing needs $30k of work easy! If not more. The engine, even if it starts up, would likely need to be overhauled, rust is a huge issue, you need new paint, you can't fly it without paint. You need a new interior, etc... If you get it for $35k, you just got yourself a piece of metal, you'll need way more money to make it airworthy.

@@jamesmiller7911 That's exactly the point - time and MONEY. He claims that "hey, you can buy this plane for $35k! What a find!" but in truth its a big lie, you can't actually fly it for that money. Sure, sum total if you have the money, the $35k on purchase + $50k on full repair is less than a working 210, but that's still not "cheap". I think its a very deceptive argument to make to claim that you'll be all in to this for $35k and it just needs "a little TLC". He called the corrosion issue, who knows what's going on with the spar, if there is corrosion on the floor, chances are the spar has a problem too, which means this thing is probably fully grounded. I'm annoyed at the dishonesty of this presentation.

If there's that much corrosion/oxidation that can be seen on the cabin interior, there's more throughout the rest of the airframe. There is far-more to this "bargain" than new exterior paint. And, being a certified aircraft, there is only so-much an owner can do to bring a hanger/barn find up to prom date condition. Part of those "bones" you speak of, Mike, includes an Airworthiness Directive (AD) that the FAA slapped on certain models of C-210s last March. This particular is in that group (1967 C-210G). The AD requires an inspection of the wing's main spar, and is estimated to cost $2,000. If the spar needs replacing, the FAA estimates a cost of $43,600. www.avweb.com/aviation-news/cessna-210-wing-spar-ad-issued/ An interesting topic that you do bring up, Mike, is how much and what kind of work can a buyer perform on a used airplane - certified or experimental - that needs a lot of TLC.

That is correct. Most of the work would either have to be performed by a licensed mechanic or the owner would have to be working under the supervision of one. And if a plane is neglected and looks like a POS, it probably is. One factor I noticed when I was involved in buying, repairing, and selling was where was the plane based? If near the seashore, look out for corrosion. If nothing else, the prices of parts will kill your budget, never mind the labor rates these days for quality work.

You can work on your own plane under the guidance of an IA which has to inspect and sign off.

@@howtimflies204 If you are working on the plane in a certified repair station, the I.A. is not necessary. The repair station certificate number is used in place of an individual with an I.A. to sign off. I should know, as I was in that situation. I was a Director of Maintenance for an FBO/Repair Station and I signed off everything before I acquired my I.A. Granted that was 20 years ago so maybe things have changed. But, I would bet not many repair station owners would stick their necks out for a non licensed person's work.

This aircraft is very expensive to operate,you need to check the insurance rates ,this is the most likely general aviation aircraft to have a gear up landing because of the way to gear has to fold because it is a high wing aircraft very risky

Planes are nice if you make a lot of money and want to spend it. I did it for about 8 years when I bought a plane in the mid 80s.i only paid $9,000 for which really wasn’t a lot of money back then. It was a 7ECA Champ. We had a saying among co-workers in the 90s that went like this “Dear Lord Please give us another oil boom as I promise to not piss it away next time”. I find it cheaper to pay an air taxi which many times is more convenient for things like being dropped for a remote rafting trip where drop off and pickup are different places. Also when hunting a larger payload is available to haul game out.

This is a rust bucket. Need to replace some of the fusilage panels due to corrosion, new seats, new paint, new avionics, maybe engine overhulling, need to check all mechanical components, control cables, breaks, landing gear, hydraulics.... It is very bad for a plane to seat like that without flying. Very very sad. This low cost aircraft may be very expensive after doing all required repairs.

You should be happy to know its not a rust bucket, it is currently flying and well under $40k. Its not pretty but it still carries 1200lbs at 165kts at 13gal/hr at 11.5k.

The Centurion 210 was Cessna's attempt to one up Beechcraft's Bonanza. It had a lot of power and was comfortable but had a few issues. The first that comes to mind is the main gear. More than one 210, especially the early models ended up having to make a belly landing because the gear would not extend. Hard braking in a 210 is a real experience in severe shaking with brakes applied. The main gear us just about a 2" diameter rod with lots of flex so when the brakes are applied the wheel assembly begins to flex back and forth shaking the entire plane. For the uninitiated its quite an experience the first time!

Hey mister, that plane wasn’t going to be flying like you are insinuating. It’s probably way out of annual and looks far from airworthy. Also, don’t suggest that this is a plane for someone “who’s mechanically inclined” as you had said. If you’re making and posting videos, you should know that it’s not legal for a non-mechanic to make repairs or restorations.

Any Cessna 210 for $35000 will likely cost your another $20000 just to get it in safe flying order. These cheapest plane/car videos are very misleading once you factor in repairs needed.

Relax! all the ADs have already been checked, engine serviced. The plane is airworthy and has been flying since the make of this video. Stay tuned for the owner's interview to tell you more about it.
