The distance between the P90 and the strings is too big. I've put a P90 spacer shim (3d printed) under my HB- DC-jr Roswell Pickup and changed the top bar for a lightning bolt version. HIGHLY recommended upgrade. Made the great guitar a lot better. Raising the pickup or even raising the pickup screws will give you an overall better sound. The lighning bolt bridge will add more attack and sustain (and won't rattle).

Stellar guitar for those who live where shipping is cheap or free. Here in the states, spending $80ish on shipping on a guitar this cheap doesn't make a ton of sense when you can get similar quality, if not a similar instrument, for the same total amount buying from a more local retailer (Affinity Series Tele DLX or JS series Jackson).

I picked up 5 harley bentons in 2018-2019 and the shipping at that time was THIRTY DOLLARS FLAT RATE up to a certain weight limit. I got a TE-20 tele style guitar for $109 total that I still play almost every day to this day. The other four are goood, but there's some magic in that cheap t-style and I still can't believe the steal I got on it.

I'm in Canada and use the DHL shipping option for 50 Euros which works out to about $70, and you're right, for one affordable guitar that doesn't make a lot of sense. So what I do is get a guitar, and I get a case or gig bag for it cheaper than I can buy one here. Seriously, check out some of the savings on name brand cases from Thomann. It's bonkers how much less they are. Then I perruse the pedals and other goodies, being sure to search out ALL of the current B-Stock available to order, and the next thing I know. . . I've got an order for 5 or 6 things and I'm still saving way more than the $70cad DHL flat rate shipping fee. As a real world example I'm actually waiting on an order from Thomann right now. Two cases, a Framus 12 string, a polytune clip, and a selection of bone, horn, and ebony picks. What I saved buying one Gator brand case paid for the shipping on the entire order.

Rob, I have grown rather fond of Harley Benton's range of guitars. Some of their pickups are good others not so much. Still, pickups are something that is an easy change to suit a personal preference. What really impresses me is how well matched the bodies and neck are and the quality of the fretting that is done on the necks. I have the TE-40 TBK Deluxe Series T-style and for $151.00 plus shipping it is a far superior instrument to a Squire in the same price range. I am ripping the Roswells out and installing a set of Iron Gear Hot Slag pickups with a Freeway 3+3 switch and stacked 500k CTS pots. I figure it will give me better tonal control and options. The neck is very comfortable to play and makes you want to continue playing. I have instruments that cost thousands more than the HB that are not as inspiring which almost frustrates you to know that you enjoy something that is 1/16th the price more. Thomann has a good thing going with the HB line because even if the electronics aren't exactly what you desire, the playability makes up for it, and the price makes it an attractive project that doesn't suck. Thanks for sharing and that P-90 through the Bad Cat sounds amazing 👌👌👌

I bought my first Harley Benton guitar in 2008. It was a nice piece of firewood. There was nothing good to say about it. The neck was twisted, it never stayed in tune, the pickups sounded like crap and you couldn't tell what it was made of. There were several layers of wood. Thomann have increased the quality of their instruments a lot. This year I bought an ST62 and an SC450. They are both great. I will probably replace the tuners and the pickups sooner or later but they stay in tune and they sound pretty good. When I started playing the guitar there were no instruments like those, not even in the same area. I would always recommend Harley Benton as beginner instruments or backup guitars. Plus you can easily turn one of them into your personal custom guitar without spending a fortune.

Personally I'd prefer to watch a review with it being run through a more reasonable amp. Nobody who is buying bthis guitar is spending that kind of money on an amp. An entry level Marshall for example is realistically what it's likely to be paired with.

Pulling the stock pup out (7.16k)…. Great tone just not enough output putting in a chrome one from An epiphone casino (14.k) I’m used to that thicker humBucker tone and trying to achieve this with the p90 *edit* decided Not to swap the pickup just swapped the cover from standard black to cream vintage... Gives the guitar a unique character.. also adding a new vibrola tailpiece

I own one of these guitars and I'd say it's worth buying if you like this style of guitar but it needs 2 modifications in my opinion. I couldn't take the unpleasant sensation of the palm of my right hand against the cheese-grater-sharp saddles so I replaced it with a very cost-effective Musiclily wraparound bridge and it was problem solved. Second, as you might expect in a guitar of this price range, the pickup is a disappointment. The pickup is bright and jangly like a Fender single coil when a traditional P-90 is more thick and meaty, with more output and mids. When I tried to raise the pole pieces to get more output I discovered the screws wouldn't rise because they aren't threaded against anything. On removing the pickup cover I could see that the bobbin has insufficient windings (to save on the price of copper?) so that it looks like a single coil. Once you've installed a quality P-90 and replaced the bridge I don't think there is much else to upgrade.

Hi Rob. Thank you so much for doing this Harley Benton review, I was watching other You tube Demos because I am wanting to buy one.I should have remembered to go to your channel first. Anyway, You are the one I trust to do evaluations on Guitars as you are a Pro with experiance, and that you have your own brand of Guitars. Out of all the lower line guitars, I think Harley Benton really has something here. I think these are the ones to possibly take Gibson off their high horse of pricing. I can't afford Gibsons anymore, I am 66 years old and on a retired budget now. I have had real Gibson Les Pauls, and a special before. I always wanted a Gibson Junior but I don't like the 50's Baseball bat thick neck. I like the slim taper I had on my Special. If Gibson was smart, the would make a run of Jr.'s with the 60's slim taper neck...then they would have some sales. My question to you Sir is: Was the neck on the Benton a little slimmer that a regular Jr. Neck ? Thank you Rob.

Harley Benton is doing a great job of providing good guitars on a budget. I do think attention to detail is important though and from the look of this guitar they need to do a better job of matching the body wood. You usually want to match it to where it looks like a single piece, unless it’s a flame maple cap.
@benedekgabor.
@benedekgabor. 2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s still better to have a slightly mismatched body wood than covering it up with a veneer that makes them look cheap. Look at what Epiphone did/does. The Les Paul’s back are not that good looking with the veneer. The Les Paul Modern is much better looking with the bare wood. Also the new SG’s are awkward too look at too, because you have the cheap looking veneer on the top and back, than you can see the bare wood on the conturing.
@Incuensuocha
@Incuensuocha 2 жыл бұрын
@@benedekgabor. I agree, those new Epiphone SGs look weird. But I don’t think it’s an either/or situation. I still think it would be nice to see HB try harder to match their body wood. If not the grain, at least the color.

This wilky may be better but my Chapman and Ltd needed no hardware changes though I did upgrade to Hipshot locking tuners after seeing them on some Chapman models.

When I was learning to play in the late 80’s and the early 90’s a cheap guitar was a shit guitar. God knows I played enough of them. You had to put down a significant amount of cash to get a guitar that you could 1)play from the first fret to the last fret on all strings 2)would stay in tune and 3)have hardware that wouldn’t fail before you got it home. They were really Shit. It’s obviously not the case anymore. I ventured wayyyyy outside my comfort zone (Gibson Les Pauls, Yamaha Sg’s & Godins etc) recently and bought one of the new Harley Benton Strats from the brand new 25th Anniversary Line. The guitar is amazing. I’m speechless. I can’t put it down. And I got change from €300. It’s ridiculous

Perhaps to get a more realistic tone test you should try playing it through the little HB valve amp you recently reviewed? After all, if someone is going to buy a sub £200 guitar, they wont be buying a £2000 amp!

How an electric guitar sounds acoustically is not any kind of indication at all of how it will sound when plugged in. Feel is something else entirely, and not really subjective anyway. Everyone has their own personal preferences in regards to feel, and that’s totally fine.
