Great video and demo of this antenna. I took mine and my FT897 on holiday to Devon, UK last week. Our cottage was out in the country and so very little QRN! On Sunday 15th Oct 15m was open and I managed a QSO with a station in mobile, Alabama. I also used it on 40m, 20m and 10m. I am delighted with this antenna and it’s portability. 73 Gary G0VLJ

I like how easy it is to tear down in the dark. That is my go to antenna for Late Shift POTA activations. I literally just grab the whole thing a lift it up out of the ground and walk it back to my truck to break it down. I originally bought it for the compact size to carry to carry it in my luggage when I travel.

Hola, esta antena con mi experiencia, mientras mas rádiales sean instalados funciona mucho mejor, del cable que trae en la compra adicional, yo adicioné tres mas, el cambio fue sorprendente en recepción y transmisión. Saludos, CD3VKL, 73

Great video. I have the exact same setup, except for the tripod. But I want to get the additional grounding from the spike, so the tripod doesn't matter to me. SO, you said you travel with your kit. Do you bring your Bioenno 1220 battery? I have that battery but have not had the balls to try to bring it on the airplane with me because it's so big. Have you ever encountered issues with this battery when checking in or flying? Thanks for the video!
@GraymanPOTAАй бұрын
Great question. TSA and most airlines do not have an issue with you flying with batteries in your carry on luggage as long as they are not homebrew battery. TSA has a maximum capacity limit of each battery and then each airline might impose a stricter limit. Always best to check with your airline first. I have not had an issue flying with my 3 AH Bioenno or the 5.5 AH Denco battery. Those are sufficient enough to power the 705 and (tr)uSDX. As for the spike, there is not an issue flying in the US as long as it is in your checked luggage. Last year at Dayton I spoke with someone from Europe who said he was going to have an issue trying to fly home with an antenna that used a ground spike and was planning on shipping it home. I use the tripod only if I am in an area where I can’t poke the spike in the ground.

@@GraymanPOTA Yeah, I don't worry about the spike. I can pack that anywhere and no issues with flights. I'm pretty sure the Bioenno 1220 battery (the one in your video, and my main portable battery) is probably too big to bring on an airplane. I like it because I can be on the air for an entire afternoon at powers above QRP. I'll have to pull out the TSA regs and read more closely.

would prefer the video without the (loud) music, other then that quite informative and interesting :) Love this antenna, it was a good staring point to alot of parts combination for other antenna ideas for me

I made my own radials by attaching four 5m speaker wires to a ring terminal, I don’t know if it works better than the supplied ribbon cable. When I tried to separate the ribbon, the copper wire came out of the plastic.

I carry 2 sets of (4) 5 meter wires and I have only deploy one set at a time for 20 meters of wire on the ground. Works great every time. I think someone got a deal on leftover bulk ribbon cable from the early 2000s and thought that would make great radials. 🌮🌮🌮

Thanks for the informative video. I am curious about how the antenna and KX2 worked for you in Las Vegas since the concentration of hams and the distances between them is so much greater than on the east coast. 73 de Tim KE6PMA

I have a flagpole mount on the ladder for our RV trailer. If I bought this antenna, would it work for me to hang the radials about four feet down from the bottom of the flag pole mount and out from there on the ground? We boondock in NV and the ground turns into concrete in the summer. 😉
@GraymanPOTA6 ай бұрын
I have never tried elevating the antenna nor the radials before. I was talking with Chris from Buddipole about the buddistick, which is an elevated vertical with a single elevated radial and they find that by elevating the antenna and radial, they get great performance. It is always worth a try. You might see some performance/ elevated SWR issues with the antenna being too close to the RV, but if the majority of the antenna above the feed point is above the RV, then it may not matter. On a side note, you will need to reconfigure and or adjust the variable inductance coil for different bands to get a good SWR match. That might become harder the further away from the ground the antenna is mounted.

I believe you can use the ant 129 military whip antenna for this as well
@GraymanPOTA Жыл бұрын
It is all about length, oh and thread pitch. I am sure there are whips that could be used which the antenna. In fact, I hope there are. As a kid of the 70s, I broke my fair share of telescopic whip antennas.
@johnkeo358 Жыл бұрын
@GraymanPOTA yup! I brought up the ant 129, because I believe there is a dude who is also using the JPC-12 with the ant 129 whip, I came across his video when I was doing research on some kind of portable antenna I can use, ideally with a whip antenna for nostalgia from back in my old army days. I just thought you might like the idea of the ant 129 because of its durability compared to the telescoping antenna you mentioned that may be somewhat fragile. The ant 129 looks pretty cheap though, I imagine there's a ton out there on surplus for under 40 bucks. I believe with a tuner, you can get it down to 20 and 40 meter

@GraymanPOTA what made you choose this antennas over the Chelegance MC-750?

The main reason was the ability to fit the antenna in my luggage when I travel.

So why did they use 3/8 x 20 threads instead of the fairly standard 3/8 x 24 threads on all their stuff. Now it is incompatible with all my other coils and whips. Very stupid ... cant even use it on my mag mounts ... sending it back for refund as all my mounts are 3/8 x 24 thread.
@tekspeditionplanet9109Ай бұрын
It's not 3/8 x 20, it's 10mm. The rest of the world is metric. We're the odd ducks.

I have this antenna, it's brilliant I've made my own radials for it too great stuff I've not tested it with the new radials yet, great channel 😊 De 2E1FUE

Great to hear! I found improvement in the SWR after I separated the included radials, but I prefer my own. I have them on a winder, they are easy to deploy and are easier to store.

@@GraymanPOTA Hi again what length did you do the radials, I did 5m I think each 4 on one section to the loop connector. Just order some more cable for portable RG8 Super XX, can I ask how does POTA work in the UK, I've never done before would it be the same as the US in setting it up! Thanks Tom 2E1FUE
