Safety, sustainability, and natural ingredients make up some of the key foundations of the clean beauty movement; however, with no legal or set definition, clean beauty is no more than a marketing term. I will explain the chemical processes behind our everyday products as well as debunking the various myths surrounding certain ingredients, and highlight some of the problems the ‘Clean’ movement causes as companies use fallacies to perpetuate fear and sell their product. Helena is a student at Francis Holland, Sloane Square in London. She plans on studying chemistry at university and is paticularly interested in cosmetic science. After attending a lecture that discussed the many misconceptions and false information about cosmetics that are causing anxiety among people, I also reflected on my own past experiences. In the past, I had come across unclear information about certain ingredients and avoided using products that contained those ingredients. However, at the time, there was insufficient scientific evidence, and I had acted based on anxiety rather than facts. Through this lecture, I have now realized that going forward, when I encounter misconceptions and false information about cosmetics, I will not simply refrain from using products out of anxiety. Instead, I will make rational choices based on objective information and evidence.
