God, I do miss those old No. 5 Dorchester Tunnel cars, the 1400 series, Bluebirds, Redbirds, did any car type ever have so many names! The rattle of the door armatures brings back memories, such a very distinctive sound, that & the "chunka-chunka of the compressors. I remember when they were in their original livery: dark blue bottom topped with a thin gold strip, whited in the middle & dark blue roofs...& no headlamps! They had nice tight brakes (most of them) they could stop on a dime. Anyone remember when they ran two car trains- "deuces"?

Yes, it sure brings back great memories of my past Red line trips dating back to early OCT '89 for some of fun family & social get-togethers, respectively). Beth Budner, Auburndale, MA!

Having been born in 77, I remember the original ones like these that were dark blue still running in the 80's. And yes....these definitely had the hard plastic seats and the loops for handles to hang on to. Ah... living in Houston now, but this is nostalgia for me.

Thanks so much for this video! These are my favorite traincars being the 01400 trainsets.

The 1400s were the last PCC type subway trains built in America in 1963. Chicago had them too but were smaller in order to turn around the tight curves on the Loop on the L. They had a single headlight above the end door and had bus style blinker doors on the sides for passengers. The first ones had double headlights on the front between the windows and the doors and also had Bullseye indirect lights like Boston had.

Wow, Boston really had an immaculate system all the way into the early 90's.

Even in the depths of the 1970s when the New York City subway was as filthy and graffitied as can be, the T in Boston was still immaculate.

Are these the ones with the hard plastic seats and where the lights turn off every so often? I remember riding them in the mid 90's when I went to college just outside of Cambridge. They were being phased out at the time.
@MJofLakelandX3 жыл бұрын
I believe so. The lights flickering may be the transfer between the third rails since when the trains enters the station, the electric rail is always placed away from the platform

These old Bluebird / Redbird cars, they were the last true subway cars on the T. Ever since the MBTA has purchased what I call metrorail cars.

My only suggestion would be to add whatever past date each T train and/or Commuter Rail trip took place (i.e. To/from JFK/UMASS). Beth Budner, Auburndale, MA!

Can I ask what might sound like a stupid question? Why don't the Boston "T" trains use their headlights, especially in the subway?
@seriouslyivan6573 Жыл бұрын
This reply is quite late, but I hope that doesn't matter too much; they do use them, but they turn them off when entering stations as to not blind the passengers.
