"The Chicken" is an instrumental funk tune composed by Pee Wee Ellis that was the B-side to James Brown's 1969 single "The Popcorn". The tune gained greater exposure with versions by jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius.
Here is my previous version and there is a backing track with tips on scales after my playing.
Hope you like it!

From around 1979 to 1984 I almost listen to James Brown on a daily basis :-) I listen to your superb performance. I should try this one as a practice. I am not too often soloing to a back up. This might be a good opportunity. I own basic Band in the box but mainly used it for recording my songs and I mainly used only the drums. But right now I try to replace that back ups with drums to my own racoustic rhythm guitar(s) and bass. You did really a extra fine soloing and I liked your tone, too. BTW Jimmy Nolan was for several years James Brown guitarist until he died in the mid/early 1980s. On the live recording from the Studio 54 he takes a longer solo which did not happened too often. I always liked it and considering Nolan started with Johnny Otis and recorded the original Wille & hand-jive it was certainly a long way. I wonder with what kind of music you began to listen and then to play, Thomas. Best regards and thank you. Frank

Hi Frank! Thanks for your interesting comment. You ask me what music I started up with and since very early age I loved melodies so up to 10 years old I listen to Gilbert O´Sullivan, ABBA and music like that but as a teenager I actually replaced that with Punk music so bands like Sex Pistols and the swedish band Ebba Grön was in my earphones the most. After that period I started to explore music more and listen to everything between The Police to Beethoven and one day I found Santana and he gave me that kick to play guitar so he´s the one that inspire me in the beginning. I think Santana with the fusion of all kind of music is a lot like who I am as a musician. I cannot stay with just one kind of music even though the Jazz and improvised music is the base for me today. I still like all kind of music that appeals to me. / best Thomas

@@ThomasBerglundGuitar Years ago now, when I first heard your music on LinkedIn, I wrote in comment that you're "at home" when you play Latin-fusion (I suppose that this genre exists :) ). Now here's the proof from yourself. But, as I already stated you're much more technical and apt in theory of music than Santana himself. My regards to our @2009framat, always with new insight in music, musicians and styles. I hope that both of you are well, despite this stupid virus thing

@@TomiV. Thank you for your comment. I am well. I had to drive a friend of mine to the doctor (but it had nothing to do with the virus) and since I have no car of my own we had to use his Mercedes Smart. Not the most comfortable feeling sitting in a car with a security guard (my friends job) who has a lot contact with people and not the luxury of doing "home office". At the moment I play in the open E5-tuning old early rock&Roll standards. Playing it in every key in that tuning. So far I had it of course in E major but F, F#, G and Bb as well.

@@ThomasBerglundGuitar Gilbert O´Sullivan was often covered or should I say used as some kind of material for many jazzers used. I remember I have a Blue Mitchell CD and he covered a composition of him but others like him, too. ABBA of course for a swedish boy :-)
