@@suzieclary3328 actually no, not true entirely. We have a mated pair as our guards, and they do perfectly well at doing their job. We even had 2 others last year in the mix and still no problems with them ignoring the hawks and crows. They still sound an alarm or show a sign that the chickens pick up on to alert them. The chickens themselves are pretty good too at spotting things, I have watched them.

@tomandtinadixon3 жыл бұрын
@@melindabruce2152 LOL I saw that one and it's funny! But they did kinda do a couple things the wrong way. Those goslings needed to be WITH the chickens, not in their own brooder and being "mommied" by Kevin LOL (that is cute though!). They imprinted on him and wanted nothing to do with being geese. I think it was a bit the same with the cats, getting kittens of course they tend to need some attention so will also imprint on people that give it to them. If they had gotten one or two about a year old that were used to being a farm cat, it would be a different story. We have a bunch outside that are all of the same family and are the mushiest things alive and get underfoot, but they do their job and we don't have any rodent problems except in the garden where I had electric line around so they didn't cover that last year. I'm hoping this year to get them to hop over that bottom line to hunt gophers!

I've watched so many homesteaders do that routine of carrying seedlings in and out of the greenhouse during the transition of seasons. Seems a shame to have to still spend so much time doing that menial task during an extremely busy time of year. If I were building a greenhouse I would do separate covers for the top and sides. Install a rod along the bottom of the top cover, jigger a rope and pulley system (like a window roller shade) and roll that sucker up at least halfway to the peak. This would also make it quick and easy to drop the cover in a flash if a storm rolls through.

You can tell the ducks don't like the chickens, stayed away in coop, then when feeding time came, they held back, one went in, told other 2 quick get in here at the end, they are a little and then said "ok that's good, let's get away from them" lol

It is lovely to see your fun projects that you do over the homesteads. You have come so far Kevin and Sarah. Hope the girls are well? and how are your parents enjoying it there? Kevin, hope they have settled in well. I love your moat and well done to all the hard work you did with putting up the fencing, looks fantastic.

Love watching your well researched work! My chickens free range on my 2/3 acre permaculture yard and garden. Interestingly, At mid day they go under my russian olive bush (big evergreen gangly thing with small berries in spring) for a siesta. They NEVER go into the coop during daylight hours except to lay eggs. They split their time between dense shade under the pecan trees and other shrubs in the leaf mold foraging for worms and beetles, out in the sunshine in the grass to get a variety of bugs but they always run for the bushes when afraid of predators. So your idea of growing vegetables/vines over the cattle panel is great for summer and it would be amazing to eventually plant food bearing vines along the fence. My conclusion is that they prefer shelter from the sun and only spend a couple hours a day out in the direct sunny "pasture" area. Another feature is they like to do their daily dust baths in loose soil, on the sunny side of a wall for protection. Their favorite "walls" are a large tree trunk, my garage, or on the edge of a tight cluster of berry bushes. Just offering suggestions for continued improvements to the moat for optimum happy chicken environment :)

A deer can jump in the corners straight on. You need to add a post or something in those corners. Hard to explain, but pause your video at 6:17 and you will see the deer can jump one fence to get in the moat.
