Ian is such a classic inspiration. He inspired so many drummers through the years. "I wait til it sounds right, then I stop twisting the key". With all of the emphasis on tuning today, what does this tell us about the importance of tuning vs just playing the right thing!

Same here, Kevin, guitar player from Glasgow, Scotland. I've often said that Ian was the first drummer I actually noticed, having basically heard only Pop records and some big bands stuff. We (actually my older bro) bought 'Deep Purple In Rock' after seeing the band perform 'Black Night' on a British tv Pop show, and, In Rock would be the first album we'd listened to that had tracks playing for more than 3 minutes, offering an opportunity to actually feature musicians, including Ian - fantastic! As you'll no doubt be aware, when you listen to 'Black Night' you'll notice the spaces in the song - mostly after the famous riff - that are occupied with drum-fills. We'd never really heard that before, or at least, never really noticed it in other records - hence my opening statement. Cheers!

I saw Rainbow live 1976, hanging around after the concert, Ronnie came back on stage to pick up his towel. Wow, I was very young and shy, so trying to say something...I shouted 'Thanks Ronnie great concert'. So he started speaking to me, very normal, nice conversation we had. I ask if I could have a drum stick from Cozy, he said sure why not. He's off behind the drums. His head pops up, shouting 'one stick or two'. Of course I said 'two please'. You are right, same here, those sticks are BIG, ....I couldn't play them

Hi Ian. Another excellent session here. I would suggest you have described the great gift of being an intuitive musician/drummer. Your ear for your own instrument as well as those of your band mates stands the test of time and has earned the respect due to you from those of us who follow your work. I once knew a young man, blind from birth, who had the gift of being an intuitive keyboard player and songwriter. There's no explanation for these gifts but let's just value and appreciate them --- and yours in particular. You put me in mind here of the late TONY MEEHAN - the other Shadows drummer. Take care and best wishes.

i heard a band once,a long time ago now,in the early '70's,frrom a pub band called omega.they played after the 10:00pm beer float and their opening number was a drum sequence which lasted about 00:30 seconds and what a drum sequence was.which sounded something akin to a bit of a workout going around the kit twice i think from memory.it was full of energy and power in about 00:30 seconds and thats about all i can explain at the moment.he would start from the right with the snare,a side drum or two and a kick drum.i hope i explained enough ian.thanks.

Sir Paice, I grew up listening your drumming, when I was younger, back in Early 80's I was used to listening Made in Japan nearly every evening, I still have the original 1972 vinyl record, and it still means a lot to me, with all the other DP records, that I own in their vinyl versions. I spent 2 or 3 years in my boyhood listening only DP and LZ. I then enjoied your drumming with Whitesnake, and in my opinion the great late Cozy Powell, didn't reach your musicality, may he forgive me for what I just said. At the age of 56 I am today the proud drummer of a Jethro Tull cover band and a Dire Straits cover Band. Still rocking and still Loving drums. I started playing Paiste cymbals because that where the cymbals that I saw in the pictures of Paice and Bonham.

"Rock On Brother" Similar story" I loved "Pick Withers" Straits 1st drummer, his playing on first album is perfect", I used that as a practice album, a great drummers album. Tull also amazing drummer Clive Bunker, you must be good to play their stuff"", trying to copy Cozy" is like running marathon", All those guys set the standards, for sure.

Nice tribute to Cozy Powell. I ain't a drummer, but the size of his sticks caught my attention since I first saw him playing. Cozy and Paicey - two different styles, two of the best drummers IN ROCK ;-)
@grobbler14 жыл бұрын
I'm definitely in the minority here, but I always thought that Cozy was just a drummer that hit the skins very hard and it gave a 'flat' sound. He seemed more of a celebrity musician than being among the ranks of say, Paice or Bonham.
@danielfisch3894 жыл бұрын
@@grobbler1 As usual, everybody got a different taste. Personally, I agree with Brian May who said that Cozy (who had played in his band) was in the league of drummers who combined power and technique such as Appice, Bonzo and Carl Palmer

@danielfisch3894 жыл бұрын
@@grobbler1 especially the sound of drums depends on the production. Powell sounds different on Rainbow and Whitesnake recordings than on Sabbath or Brian May albums. Paicey sounds different on Perfect Strangers compared to Battle rages on or Whitesnake albums, Peart sounds different on Presto compared to earlier or later albums. Listen to Whitesnake' s Slide it in (UK version) or the Martin Birch produced early Rainbow stuff, and you hear a pretty fat drum sound ;-)

@loucontino48044 жыл бұрын
Brian Bennett! Wow, a throwback name for sure. But even in the states, the early Rock 'n Roll drummers came from jazz backgrounds. The music changed & the musicians adapted & changed with it. My old friend & drum teacher, the late Gary Chester, who incidentally won a Gene Krupa Drum Contest and spent time with Gene personally, was a jazz drummer all through the 40's & 50's. The 60's came, & really only by chance was he thrust into becoming one of the most recorded drummers in Rock History. Same with Hal Blaine & Earl Palmer. If you played on a hit record, primarily 45 rpm's back then, the studio contractors called you in for the next, the next & the next. You were a CASH COW. But, as much as Gary always taught reading for future studio work, he always said if you get with a band that is moving forward, stay with the band. There are more chances of drummers adding to writing credits & in-turn royalty money with a band than just being a hired gun in the studio. This was always strange for a young 23 year old to hear, who believed all musicians only played music for the love of the music. I knew nothing about it being a business. But you learn, mostly through hard knocks, & you learn to balance the business with your love of music or you take a different road in life. There is no right or wrong, it's different & okay for each of us.
