Matt Nagy wasn’t just the QB coach in KC. He was OC in 2017, Alex Smith’s best year by far. Apparently a big part of Brett Veach slamming the table for Mahomes pre-draft. According to Mahomes, Nagy leaked him a cheat sheet prior to his interview with Andy. Obviously didn’t work out in Chicago. But he did drag Mitchell Trubisky to the playoffs. Gotta have some offensive know-how to get that done.
@stephbenson7340 Жыл бұрын
9 wins is a pretty dramatic floor and would be considered a disaster for Kansas City, frankly. Andy Reid has only had one season below 10 wins since becoming their head coach, and Patrick Mahomes has never finished below 12 wins as a starter. A 9-8 season would be the worst of Andy Reid's tenure as head coach.
@EV_Ben Жыл бұрын
Love this whole series! Kinda surprised you didn’t mention Chad Henne retiring. He has been so instrumental for the last couple seasons, including the playoffs. Backup QB has been very important for this team’s success. It’s something im a little nervous about
@nopeteys2424 Жыл бұрын
I hear what you’re saying, but i think its been more of bad luck that Mahomes has suffered injuries in the 2020 and 2022 playoff runs and Henne has had to come in. Mahomes stays on the field the majority of the time. And as we saw this past season when Henne came in in the jaguars playoff game Andy Reid changes his scheme when he has the backup QB in, they rely heavier on the run and he busts out easy passing plays that he has in his back pocket that he doesn’t always use when Mahomes is in. Mahomes is gonna be on the field 99 percent of the time unless something catastrophic happens, and if a backup QB has to come in then the rest of the team will step up like we’ve seen them do. They’ll be just fine

I think the Pacheco hype was somewhat warranted. CEH came at a time when the Chiefs were sorta in flux of their offensive identity for the future (leaning less on Tyreek's deep ball and deep shots in general when teams play more 2 safety formations vs the Chiefs). @haagenslash5963 Жыл бұрын
Only question for toney is health. He has a bad habit of breaking everyone’s ankles, including his own. A healthy toney in the #1 spot would be a nightmare for defenses. We schemed tyreek open deep and we could do the same for him. Give toney the ball and 1 man to beat and that’s a touchdown 9 times out of 10.

32:25 I swear every single "random nfl exec/coach" quote to come out in the past few years regarding Bienemy was that exact idea: that Bienemy was simply along for the ride. Something I would see Bears fans talk about after the first few Nagy years was that they got suckered into paying him to be HC (they also drafted Trubisky instead of Mahomes) when he was really just riding Reid's coattails.
@t4d0W Жыл бұрын
Yeah its hard for Bienemy to stand out given he will get lumped up with former offensive minded Reid guys who haven't proven themselves well like the Nagy example. Doug Pederson was the only other proven offensive minded guy and he got a SB to show for. And to that extension Frank Reich was given opportunities along with offensive guys under him like Siriani.

@dfp_01 Жыл бұрын
I think part of what makes the Chiefs so good is that outside of the four guys mentioned early on-Mahomes, Kelce, Jones, and Bolton, plus maybe Creed Humphrey if you feel like he's a top 5 center right now-many of the other players are high-quality interchangeable parts. They may not have a single running back in the top 20 in the league, but their running back room on aggregate is one of the best. Outside of Kelce, the rest of the receivers and tight ends are good but not great, and that's ok because you only need a couple of them out there at a time. Outside of Chris Jones, there aren't a whole lot of guys on the defensive front that would scare you, but as a unit they bring the heat well. That kind of team structure allows for versatility, flexibility, resting guys so their snap counts aren't inflated, getting through/past injuries, and-probably most importantly-easily moving on from players that aren't in the Big Four or Five because instead of asking one guy to be The Guy, they just want each one to be able to increase his workload a little bit. Credit to Veach and Reid and their team, because I think that strategy has led to a great deal of their recent success. Sure, it's not good for fantasy football, but they play for real and for each other as a team.

My guess for the tackle situation is that they don't want to start Wanya right away, so they got Smith and pray that Mahomes survives with 4 linemen and TEs, develop Wanya as fast as possible, then move Taylor to the left to start Wanya on the right? Probably? Cause it won't be pretty if the Chiefs have to roll with Smith an entire season as LT For the receivers, I'm just praying that Justyn Ross is healthy, he could be our #1, would loved a bit of a word on him, if he's not, then it's a committee between all the "ball-handlers" and hopefully Rice is coachable into an actual weapon, I'd love to see how he turns out, but yeah, least... hopeful pick for me as well, I guess And for Matt Nagy I think we will be fine, the offense was awesome even before Mahomes/Bieniemy, we were just not the behemoths we are now, but if Reid trusts Nagy, I do as well, honestly I don't think we will see much of a difference from last year

All 31 NFL have skipped on bienemy for years. His reputation precedes him. He comes across as a genuinely unhappy guy, that isn’t relatable. You compare his demeanor to Andy Reid (and Spags) and it’s a stark difference. Andy is hardcore- but he’s lovable. As a Chiefs fan I’ve never believed Bienemy’s smile (if you ever see it)- because I know he’d rather furrow his brow. Yep it’s football. And you need to be a hard ass often. But I think the competitive spirit is maxed out with Andy, Travis, and Pat. Bienemy now gets his shot to prove his old-school style works and we get to go win another Super Bowl. Chiefs win regardless.

just my 2 cents about the OT "plan". 1st, i dont think Donovan was plan A. the draft didnt fall the way plan A needed it to. 2nd, they say Donovan was playing hurt last year in Tampa and they believe he'll be back to full strength. 3rd, what % downgrade is Donovan to Orlando? is that % loss in skill worth the $13M savings to add elsewhere to this team. especially when you factor in that all to often Andy had to chip with TEs and RBs on at least one of the OTs side most plays. if he had to chip and help, might as well save $ on that position. 4th, Andy has played with a stronger RT then LT in the past. Schwartz was much better than Fisher (no disrespect to Eric) while they were in KC. Andy can scheme around a deficient LT if he has the better RT on the roster. IMO, signing Jawaan Taylor to the big deal means Andy feels RT is solved now. now they can scheme around LT while saving money at the position. Great episode fellas! love hearing an unbiased view of the team i root for

Nagy and Mahomes are more on the same page than Bienemy was. You look at any of the behind the scenes this last year, especially post season, all you see is Mahomes going to Nagy on the sideline to talk about the play. Nagy had stents in KC where he did end up calling plays, Bienemy was never handed over play calling duty ever. Also of you watch any press conference with Nagy, it's clear to see the difference in how he would interview compared to Bienemy. Bienemy is full of cliché saying without any real substance behind it in most all of his answers.
@xxBlegit35xx Жыл бұрын
This is a dumbass comment. Nagy was the QB coach last year. Nagy called plays for like 4-5 games at the end of the 2017 season, what are you even talking about?

The chiefs hands aren't clean when it comes to bieniemy too. Funny how Nagy gets to be the HC in waiting but bieniemy doesn't. That decision also might have had something to do with him leaving.
@belisarius7880 Жыл бұрын
People always like to point to Matt Nagy and Doug Pederson getting hc jobs and say bienemy is having an unfair shake. First off none of us were in those interviews, so none of us know why bienemy didn’t land a hc job. But isn’t it possible, the league had soured on Andy ried ox’s for head coaches? Consider, Philly fired pedersen, and chicago fired Nagy. I suspect their first hc stints coming to an end, could’ve taken some of the shine off of bienemy as chiefs oc. But everyone always wants to say it’s race. Who knows maybe it was, but let’s consider the context before we jump to play that card.

it’s just hard to evaluate chiefs WR room on an island,by themselves they are not impressive,neither they were last season and it just didn’t matter,15 is going to drag your ass across the finish line..he’s the great equalizer,rice might not be a top prospect for other teams but in KC they believe it will work,matter fact pat likes him already after a few workouts..so I wouldn’t be surprised if any of them just happen to have an out of nowhere amazing season. On the defensive side they have nowhere to go but up,I’m really excited to see the D line work as a unit crushing pockets,and like y’all said they just need to slow you down so that’s already better than last year. Bottom line is as long as 15 is there,they are automatically the team to beat.

If bienemy can make Washington great offensively, he will get that head coaching gig, and I believe it will happen.

Just to be clear they are 100% wrong. Naggy actually took over playcalling duty on Dec 03, 2017 after the Chiefs went on a 1-5 skid and the Chiefs went in an offensive slump. With Naggy calling plays they finished the season 4-1, the offense played significantly better (29ppg), and they made the playoffs. That play calling stretch is what got Naggy the HC job in Chicago. A simple google search will confirm this, it was a publicly announced thing and the NFL website ran an article on it (along with everybody else) I don't know what sort of revisionist history they are blathering about, but it has no basis in reality.
