The first painting depicts the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, by Hugh Frazer, 1826. Under the canopy Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, lays dying. In the foreground Murchad mac Briain is engaged in hand to hand combat with Jarl Sigurðr digri (Sigurd the Stout) of Orkney.

@@crusader2112 Haha, I suspect you’re right. My ancestors (Norsemen anyway) were on the opposing (and losing) side in the battle depicted above and I’m not mad about it, and that was as recent as 1014. Time to get over it lads. Not even seething about Stamford Bridge in 1066 vs the English.
