It’s clear Mr Herzog’s refused in his own analysis to work through and engage with the negative transference and his repressed rage against his own father. The Oedipal drama is so utterly unresolved!

Herzog talks about bad professionals. A good psychologist or psychoanalyst only helps you become aware of things, interpretation and explaining stuff does not help, but you have to know what is in front of you to make better decisions and judgements. Herzog has an ignorant view on the topic.

The assertion, that "Psychonanalysis tries to illuminate every corner of the house" is very misleading, and in fact omitting one of the greatest insights of psychonanalysis: That the house has corners, that can never be illuminated and these corners will affect you, even if you are not aware of it. To be more concrete: The unconscious will be there, whether you try to illuminate it or not. Or as Freud put it: "The ego is not master in its own house." And I for one think, it's far more helpful to at least try to figure out what has an effect on my behavior, than ignoring these forces.

I am sure they have not seriously read classic psychoanalytic bibliography. Also, there are a lot of anti heroes that have no counter proposals. The typical person resists to the teeth at a certain point in the psychoanalytic cure, and this is where people stop sometimes their analysis. You have to live the experience to believe it, empirically see the results on your way of being and the come the behaviours that were before impasses and full of anxiety. I salute you from México.

I think Herzog is responding in a highly provocative way to certain perceived abuses carried out by psychologists, but his statements are wildly hyperbolic and absurd. Are psychologists given too much power? In many cases yes, but there are many competing schools of psychological thought, some of them in direct contradiction with each other, so you can’t generalize. Herzog seems to be denying that mental illness exists or that, if it does, we can cure it by simply “treating each other with great care.” If you hate psychology, then that means you hate the study of the human mind. The goal should not be to abolish psychology/psychotherapy but to improve it and to use it in a way that impinges on human freedom and dignity as little as possible.
@VingulКүн бұрын
@@alexross5714 Fair. I imagine part of what grinds Herzog’s gears is the wider «analytical mindset». I share this with him. I mean the sort of cold and clinical mindset that won’t acknowledge that a forest or a waterfall is a «thing» in and of itself, but views it as mere material, mere atoms or whathaveyou. Modern man is severely lacking in poetical faculties and an appreciation of the sublime; we break things down and reduce them to tiny bits that we fool ourselves into thinking we can understand. Enter the arrogance that Herzog points to.

I haven't, but it's near the top of the list of American states I'd like to visit. I went to quite a few over five trips between 2002 and 2013 but none of the Southern ones, other states topping the proverbial list are Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina. Largely due to the great music and related documentaries I've watched from those regions. I just hope Louisiana isn't quite as humid/hot as Florida, because I could hardly bear that.

We are born into a psyche. The infinite consciousness we are becomes contained by this virtual computer called mind, and organic computer called body. Psychoanalysis helps us decide from the inside out and vice versa, to unravel the layered processes contributing to our perceived pains that lead to maladaptive behavior.

Psychoanalysis is useful. I tend to think people are well off reading some psychoanalytic material and using it as a means of reflection. Beyond traditional psychoanalysis and its tendency to seek illumination and discovery, and beyond the identification and assimilation of the "shadow", one may discover a respect for and recognition of as yet unseen shadows, and the shadows of shadows, and the unknowable, unseeable, undetectable aspects of psyche. Also useful is the recognition that psychoanalysis is never "done". One is never fully or completely analyzed. We should dispense with notions that humans are perfectable and that a reasonable aim of psychoanalysis should consist of a linear progression with a definite end point in which someone is fixed or whole or in some way perfect.
@TheGinglymusКүн бұрын
The good thing about psychoanalysis is that it's for the people that find ir interesting. If you don't you can just ignore it. I find it fascinating and it helps me think about things in a much more interesting way than the other schools of thought today that wish to just reduce human beings to dopamine or animal behaviouralism.

I sincerely don't understand why this movie isn't included among the best films by Kubrick as well as best movies ever made. It might never be as loved as A Clockwork Orange or The Shining since it's longer and brings forth less emotion, which would bore the average audience member. But film enthusiasts and critics at least have to give it the attention it deserves by acknowledging it as the undisputed masterpiece to which it should be referred if there's any justice in this world at all.

Looking at all my friends in therapy, all of whom are getting fatter and more addicted to pornography and video games (neither of which are inherently bad things, my brother and I have made both professionally), I can't reasonably argue against the statistic. From what I can tell, most people simply use therapists as a subscription-service-vent-friend, and then proceed to be more and more impulsive. It really sucks.

I tell you what is wrong with psychoanalisis. greek 'psyche' is latin 'anima', english 'soul' The soul is like a robot, like a programable computer. it is like an animal that you can train. They tell us that we are the soul. But we are the spirit. They replace the recognition of the imperishable spirit with the image of the perishable soul.
