I've had seizures where my pupils fully dilated, I crushed a glass cup to pieces in my hand, I made a crazy guttural sound that scared my little sister so much she wouldn't talk to me for a week. On top of all that, one of the times I bit my tongue, I came to and started coughing and sprayed blood all over the room. Also, I was on Tegretol for a few months, one of the main side effects is loss of appetite. I lost 40 pounds and had people excusing me of being bulimic. I'm glad I didn't grow up during this time, I would have been screwed.

I truly believe this poor girl was suffering from a type of schizophrenia. My moms uncle had schizophrenia, he was convinced he was Moses and almost drowned trying to part water. He was also extremely strong when in a psychotic break… Also I have epilepsy and when I was diagnosed I had to have an MRI to check for damage. My brain has no damage yet I still have epilepsy as it can be caused by genetics so that’s not conclusive evidence to say she didn’t suffer seizures. I also found this interesting piece of research that states: “Schizophrenia patients probably are more prone to seizures than the general population. This vulnerability may be conferred by the neuropathological substrate of schizophrenia itself, as well as by the secondary effects of the illness and by exposure to medications that lower the seizure threshold.”

my theory is that she had PANDAS/PANS. in the 70s it didn't have a name, meaning that she wouldn't have been able to be diagnosed with it. Some of the symptoms include: dialated pupils, hallucinations, delusions, ocd and food restriction, most of which annalise had. Non epilaptic seizures don't cause brain damage and they don't show up on an eeg so maybe that's what she was experiencing. i don't think she was possesed and i think she either had something like pandas/pans or a mental health condition.

My mother who is a doctor once said that usually in a case of someone with epilepsy, the reports will most likely come back as normal. So it’s quite difficult to detect it. Maybe that’s why they never found anything not normal with her.

I had about half a dozen BAD symptoms of a head injury but if that MRI comes back good, like it does in 80 percent of coma patients, you're not injured. Leave us alone. Finally, a battery of visual and balance tests discovered damage to the different areas of the brain. The doctor said "well yes at the organic level you have brain injury. What other level is there?? :) They know as much about the brain now as doctors did about the heart 150 years ago.

We have met with several world renowned epileptologists and for years his EEG was normal. Then it wasn’t. All of his other tests were completely normal. Aside from his genetic diagnosis of KBG Syndrome and severe cognitive delay NO DOCTOR has been able to identify the CAUSE of his epilepsy. Not even KBG explains it. 70% of people with seizures never find the cause and are easily treated with medication. Those 30% that don’t are at a higher risk for SUDEP. My son is in the highest category for death due to seizure. And yet, aside from a singular congenital anomaly that wasn’t easily detected, he is otherwise perfect. It is totally true. This case sounds like she had epilepsy, a psychosis that was worsened by medication (AED’s can alter the mental states) and as her seizures worsened, in her postictal state she was likely (persuaded by the constant barrage of exorcism rights), to state that she had spirits taking over her body. AED’s can cause a loss of appetite as can worsening seizures. I’ve seen it. I’ve held my boy through tens of thousands of seizures and watched him through Todd’s Paralysis and Non Comvulsive Status Epilepticus. If you don’t know what those are…look them up and if you do then both of those are also completely possible in this poor woman’s experience.

I would be freaked out too if I was told by my loved ones my seizures are demons and that I was being possessed. Temporal lobe epilepsy is a form of emotions, like deja vu or terror as if something terrible is going to happen. It causes scaring on your brain and untreated can lead to grandmal seizures. I know this because I have them. Luckily I have them controlled but I still get the deja vu seizure and during those seizures I’m aware of my surroundings and can even follow what someone is saying.

As several other people have already pointed out the EEG not showing anything is normal. I have seizures and nothing has ever come up on a scan, EEG or MRI. unless you happen to have a seizure *while* the EEG is in progress the odds of something showing up are very slim

I've had seizures before, brought on by sudden withdrawal of Xanax after being on it for a year. I had no physical sensation warning me I was about to have one. My son just happened to be sitting next to me on the couch and glanced at me and shouted out to my husband that my eyes had rolled back in their sockets. My husband called an ambulance and they told him to lay me on my side until they turned up. I had zero consciousness during it. All I remember is waking up and finding myself lying on my side on the couch and feeling confused. I didn't understand why I was on te couch because I had no conscious recollection of deciding to go to sleep on the couch. I didn't know what day it was or what time of day it was. All I thought was to sit up and started to try to remember what had happened that I couldn't remember anything. I also didn't know who I was or my name. My husband yelled at me to lie down because the ambulance was on its way. I was confused and asked him what ambulance? He told me I had had a seizure and I just stared at him blankly and didn't know what he meant. When the ambulance came after checking me over they put me in it and took me to hospital. I remember lying in the stretcher just staring blankly at the people wondering where I was and where I was going. After I arrived at the hospital I started to feel tired and exhausted and all I wanted to do was go to sleep. The doctors wouldn't let me. I can remember all these details but they feel like they happened to someone else and I have no idea how I could not understand anything at the time but I can recall the event as a memory later in time. It would have been very easy to have been taken advantage of by anyone who wanted to hurt me while I went through the whole experience. I was not in control of my full mental capacity and certainly could not make informed decisions about anything.

I had a psychogenic seizure after anesthesia and I thrashed against people holding me down and couldn’t control my body. I hurt my back badly because of the muscle contractions. Despite having just been sedated for surgery, I was still strong enough to slam myself against the rails of the hospital bed. All of this was against my will, of course. The anesthesiologist walked over to my boyfriend at the time who was my ride home. My boyfriend said he looked pale in the face and a bit sweaty. The anesthesiologist said “I’ve been doing this for almost 20 years and I’ve never seen someone do what she did”. When my boyfriend asked for more info, he just said I was extremely violent but I looked ‘terrified’ which he admitted freaked him out. To watch someone flail and try to harm themselves while their face appeared terrified and afraid of what they were doing.

When I was about 10 or so my mom brought home the Emily Rose movie from one of those $5 DVD bins at the store, and while I thought the movie wasn't that great or anything (there was a reason it was $5) I ended up watching the director's commentary because I had nothing better to do and I found out about Anneliese Michel. I spent the next several days scouring the internet doing research about her case and I legitimately scared myself into believing that I was opening myself up to demonic possession and didn't sleep for like 3 days. I'm a Shaniac skeptic through and through and I largely was back then too, but something about Anneliese's story just messed me up big time. Given what we now know about psychiatric conditions and epilepsy, it almost certainly was mental health stuff exacerbated by being constantly scrutinised by people around her. That being said, the only unexplainable thing was how she knew details about that excommunicated priest. I guess you could argue that she probably read it somewhere, but at the same time, I can't imagine the Vatican are very open about having information like that available to the public. It's tragic and chilling either way.
