Whether Annabelle is truly a demon or not, giving it respect is giving it what it wants. If those anecdotes are true, then this demon hurts and kills people for the heck of it. You don't go to a serial killer and say "I really admire your work". You stop them and treat them like the villain. If anything, Shane has the right attitude towards it.

that's simply not true. taunting the Annabelle doll is something you don't want to do. sure it's good that Shane is not fearful considering demons do feed off of fear, however, taunting the doll is what gets people into negative experiences with the paranormal. also, Annabelle is not a "demon." it is a doll with a demonic attachment to it. it is not possessed. it simply just has a demon attached to it. if someone is directly asking the doll for something or strictly taunting it just because they want to know if there is actually a demon in the doll, it's not a good thing. that's why you respect the artifacts in the museum and don't touch anything nor invite anything for a conversation unless you are truly in a position where you are strong in your beliefs as a catholic or christian and believe God will protect you, though it's still not recommend to taunt something. take the priest for example. he had trust in God and still taunted the doll and said "God is more powerful than any demon," and still got in a car crash and got severely hurt moments later when he left the museum. so it's always important to be respectful and not taunt these artifacts, whether you believe it or not. it's not hard to be respectful.
