Christians used the ichthus, fish symbol, essentially as a language pun from the time period. As far as I remember, the symbol was an easy drawing as the followers had to practice their religion in secret. One person would draw a curved line on the ground with their foot and another would finish the symbol by adding a second curved line. This could easily by erased afterword and wouldn't draw suspicion otherwise. I can't remember where I heard this so don't take my word for it.

To answer Jesse’s question about the fish and the cross: as far as I know, both have been and are symbols of Jesus, it’s just that the cross is more popular.

The so-called "Jesus Fish" was a popular metal decal Christian people would put on the back of their cars back in the day where I'm from, I don't know if it's still popular. But yes you're right, the fish is a symbol of Jesus and is a reference to the Biblical story of the miracle of Jesus feeding thousands of people with five loaves of bread and two fish. The fish became a symbol that was synonymous with the idea that Jesus would always provide for those who had faith, and "fishers of men" is a phrase purportedly used by Jesus when he recruited the first Apostles (who were fishermen) to follow him, saying they would become "fishers of men." So "fish" have multiple symbolic associations with Christianity, and there's probably more examples than what I mentioned here.

My mother and grandmother were Pentecostal. Deeply believed in and performed glossolalia, believed that they were given signs and "visions" of the "End Times" in which we were living, that I was preordained to grow up to do some great "work for the Lord", and that we would all be raptured. This experience wasn't the only factor, but a big contributing one as to why I am atheist today. They are both dead now, and to think their belief system was born out of this debased con-man's contrivances makes me all the more repulsed by religion and evangelicalism in particular.
