The thing abt the chupacabra that gets me is that it has two very different general descriptions - the mangy-dog look which is very easy to explain, and then this weird reptilian/alien thing with spines and whatnot. How did these two vastly different creatures end up being considered the same thing?

Coincidence or not the vampire bat is native to south and central america. Edit: Is really sounds like Chupacabra is a really large bat, bats can get huge. Edit 2:Bloodless kills of chickens?
