The Chinese Nationalist Party is gaining the upper hand and has almost completely defeated the Communist Party's forces, forcing Mao and his associates to retreat to the northern suburbs (more than 12 000 km) to reorganize and rebuild the army. This event became known as "The Long March."

The army commander Cheng Zihua was only 29 years old, the political commissar Wu Huanxian was 27 years old, and the regimental cadres of the 25th Red Army were mostly in their early 20s. The company and squad leaders were mostly under 20 years old, and the soldiers were mostly 15-16 years old. The average age of the entire army was less than 17 years old, earning them the nickname "the Baby Brigade". This was because the brigade was largely composed of orphans of martyrs. When the People's Republic of China was founded, 97 generals came from the 25th Red Army.

But I have to mention, calling "Chinese Civil War" is not accurate from recent century, because multi sides during the war declared they are singular China and pursued legitimate govern. Maybe, it's better to call "unification war" if considering civil war definition based on international law.

Unfortunately, the animation explains nothing at all. It completely ignores the conflict between China and the USSR and the war with Japan as well. It also remains completely unclear how a few thousand remaining Reds became a few million by the end of the World War II and where they had all been in the meantime.

I’m not saying this map is fully accurate but when the communists who definitely had more than the said amount in 1936 teamed up with the republic to kick out the Japanese behind the scenes many began supporting the communists and converted during northern China’s occupation especially because communism was strictly anti-Japanese so it probably had to do with hating the invader as well.

The reality was that Chiang Kai Shek was brutally suppressing anyone who would dare protest against the draconian living conditions. Millions were starving and more than half of the population was illiterate. This was happening since 1911. When the civil war broke out, KMT soldiers were defecting to the communist side.

Chinese here. My grandparent became an orphan during this time, but from what they said the Nationalists lost the will of Chang Kai-shek due to the Nationalists intentionally destroying the dam and flooding my grandfather's hometown, and due to the Communists promising land, jobs, and homes after the war. I think at the time the Nationalists didn't really inspire the people at all the same way that the communists did against the Japanese.

The numbers in this video are completely wrong. In 1937, the Chinese Red Army numbered tens of thousands, and in 1945, it numbered about 1 million. The number of casualties of the People's Liberation Army is far lower than that of the Kuomintang, and this is true in any war period.

Would be nice to add in the context that the Sino-Japanese war/WW2 occurred during this same period when both sides formed temporary alliance against a common enemy, so the civil war was not a continuous conflict but went on and off. It'd also be nice to know if the casualty numbers include the S-J war casualty or just for the civil war, given that for many years the Japanese war was the major conflict.

@@barbadoskado2769 I mean, the nationalists were entirely occupied fighting the Japanese during WWII and the Soviet Union handed all of the Chinese land and equipment they took in the process to the communists after the war ended instead of the legitimate government. The communists then attacked with Soviet backing while the legitimate government was completely exhausted and out of supplies. I'm pretty sure that had way more to do with how things turned out than the efforts of the surviving 10,000 communist fighters.

One of the biggest reason how the KMT lost was because their soldier nvr had heart to fight for them. The defecting rate was as high as 50% in 1948... there were story of the entire company disappearing, given that almost all the soldiers were kidnapped to serve. My grandfather's story was that when the KMT went to his village to "catch young boys" to train them. At 15yo he ran away at night and hid under a train. The communists nvr had to recruit, they had the power to move villages, meaning at each village they stop, young men from the village leaves with them.

I found a lot of errors in your video. I am a Chinese person living in Sweden. I read a lot of related books and articles. 1. The war starts in 1927.08.01, rather than your start date. 2. When WW2 ends, CCP just have an army of 150M. The causalities of KMT is much larger than CCP because of corruption, starving and the economic collapse of KMT ruling areas. CCP cannot have an army of 400M in 1946, because the land is much smaller than KMT's. Until 1948.11, the CCP army gained advantage of number of soldiers 1st time. 3 The largest loss of KMT army is surrendering. In 1949, nearly half of CCP soldiers come from KMT army. My great grandfather was one of them. Most KMT armies become CCP armies in the end. Some of them even participated in the Korea War(like 60th of KMT became 50th army in CCP)

One thing to notice for westerners: communists aren't naturally the enemies of patriotic nationalists, unlike what you've seen in East Europe. Those guys arrived in Poland/Czech etc. in Soviet tanks and couldn't speak for their national interest over the Soviet one for sure. This isn't the case in China, Mao's leadership wasn't recognized by the Soviet for a long time until he got the upper hand in the civil war. My grandpa's father, who was a stubborn nationalist army official, found that the KMT had sold the customs to the British, the market to the US, and the land of Mongolia for Soviet neutrality, and it even used Japanese war criminals as consultants, he simply joined the PLA with his men. It's not rare and this kind of support is the reason how the communist expanded the army so quickly in the war. Of course, the Taiwanese souces didn't count these as their casualties.
