@dnickaroo3574 I don't know what stat you read but Australia does not have the largest debt since the 1950s, America has over 35 trillion in debt and we have about 1.5 trillion in debt as of 2024, we have actually extremely low debt in comparison to most other western countries. Trade partners change a lot but for the most part they are usually more fruitful when you within the same region, using our "traditional trade partners" would only cripple us both short term and long term.

Older Australian here, your assumptions are insulting and naive. Australians disliked the British military's disregard for Australian lives at Gallipoli and other WW-I battles, and saw the British government's WW-II exploitation of Australian volunteers and the UK failure to defend Singapore (giving Axis access to the Dutch Indies and New Guinea) as betrayal. With the Australian forces trapped in Europe and Africa, Australia had to support the US navy against the Imperial Japanese. After WW-II Australia's first defence strategy was to obtain the atomic bomb, but neither the Brits nor Americans would share so in 1972 Australia switched its defence priority to the strategic defence pacts. Unfortunately, during war a treaty is worth only the paper it is written on, and mostly because both Indonesia and the CCP are expansionist militant regimes, Australia has to also maintain and build its own defence capabilities while knowing that the CCP would almost certainly begin by cutting all our communications lines and destroying satellites.

Interesting to see a Taiwan perspective. I think I would explain the background to our defence strategy a little differently and note that the "focussed force" strategy we now have is a shift toward assisting Taiwan, even if that is not the primary intention. Australia will support the major democracy and economy that is Taiwan and you should not underestimate the value of Taiwan people to Australia. Aukus Pillar 2 will provide long range strike capability that will be able to support Taiwan relatively quickly (including launch platform for the US from Aus). Pillar 1 (SSNs) will take longer and not impact any immediate altercation. Australia is highly unlikely to provide "boots on the ground" into Taiwan, BUT is almost guaranteed to lead (let alone support) sanctions. We are highly like to quickly be involved in the Malacca Strait trade route and likely to have involvement in any blackade of Taiwan - though that last element would be limited until Aukus pillar 1 (submarines) are available. Stay strong Taiwan.
@awf655414 күн бұрын
Agreed, no boots on ground in Taiwan. The ground forces are too small to provide a significant force anyway. The navy is very likely to be involved in any conflict, but Australia's most significant contribution (apart from intelligence) would be as a submarine base for operations against China's Indian Ocean supply lines.
