Hey Ward! Awesome interview!! My son is a Super Hornet WSO and a current TOPGUN instructor. A few months back some of the instructors were in Hawaii for some event. The at the time TOPGUN intel officer who’s friends with Admiral Paparo’s daughter was invited along with my son and others to Admiral Paparo’s quarters for dinner. Admiral Paparo wasn’t there at the time but his wife was a gracious host. My son said the walls of his residence are a virtual who’s who history of the Navy and a good time was had by all in attendance.

This is VERY interesting 🤔 It sounds like a great way to say, "we will do whatever it takes and whatever the President DECIDES to do... And yet, AT THE SAME TIME not put anything in writing that could be interpreted as being "hawkish or fear mongering". I cannot IMAGINE just how difficult it has become to be a Battlegroup Commander in our new complex and intertwined world. Who would have thought that the Cold War would seem simple compared to today?

I was very heartened to see that we still have some very intelligent, wise, capable officers with true leadership in important roles. In the past few years we have witnessed so many weak leaders at high levels that seem more concerned with their careers than in the defense of our country. Admiral Paparo was very impressive indeed with a grasp of the big picture. He inspires confidence. I do wish you had asked him some questions on how our allies in the region (Japan, South Korea, etc) factor into the defense plan for a conflict that might take place with the Chinese.

Yet another example, in a long line of such, of the impressive and astonishing capability of our senior military leadership. The Admiral's competence and wisdom are palpable. It is hard to imagine a more capable person "at the helm",and yet, we know that sitting in other venues around the world, there are two to three DOZEN 4-star US military officers of comparable skill. Americans will all sleep better tonight being reminded of the quality of leadership we enjoy. The rest of world will sleep fitfully, if at all.

Extremely well said. Couldn't agree more. Pretty clear that despite spending a fortune, given ICBM/Nuclear triad costs, China's incredible investment in space, the US's non-Indo-Pacific obligations, and the overwhelming need for long-range/fast missiles, plus the lead time to rebuild ship-yards, plus the recent blunders (littoral/Zumwalt), plus the desire for unmanned everything, us Gen6 eventually ... wow. Thank you, Mooch… A great program as usual. I’ve listened to your channel since the beginning. I am a former US Naval Flight Surgeon that also served on board the USS independence from 1980 to 1982 as the CAG - 6 Flight Surgeon. I was stationed at Naval station Cecil Field in Florida while ashore. I was assigned to VA 15, VA 87, both A-7 squadrons. I flew usually with VA 176, that had A-6’s… I flew usually in the KA-6D in the Right seat. Our CAG was Commander Tim Wright… (He retired as a Vice Admiral.) I also flew an EA-6B’s (VAQ-133) and S-3’s (VS-28). We had F-4’s on my first cruise( Indian Ocean 1980-1981) VF-33 and VF-102! Those squadrons transitioned after that cruise to F 14’s. On further work ups, we had VF- 14 and VF-32 F-14’s squadrons assigned to Independence. I never did get the fly in the F-4 or the F-14 as I did not go up to Oceana to get the check out that was necessary to ride in the backseat. Plus I was the “Attack Quack” and would have taken a lot or ribbing if I flew in a fighter… Keep up the great work!! Thank you!!

Great topic coverage. I do appreciate the admiral getting down in the weeds to discuss these topics. We don't often get that perspective. The missile inventory has always been a real measure of our preparedness AND the capability of our services to replenish our ships/aircraft as said supplies are expended. The other measure of combat power are actual number of hulls. As I recall, in December 1941, the US had over 900 ships. Today we have about 470 active and reserve US Navy ships. If quantity has a quality of its own, the balance in hulls (and sailors) is a concern in the ocean distances consideration. Time and distances are another play consideration we have always played. Hiding surface vessels from high eyes is a concern. I still have concerns about our capabilities due to our lacking in shipyards and capacity to build and repair our ships, a knock-on effect. Having lived and worked at both Mare Island and Long Beach Navel Stations, I miss seeing our work capability. Great discussion here.

I am alarmed. I did not hear a "plan to defeat China". What I heard was that we do not have enough carrier strike groups and even our supply of ammo is under pressure. Our industrial base is hollowed out and I don't sense any urgency or reasonable chance that we can bring it back meaningfully quickly enough. The Admiral is clearly a hero since he will be fighting without enough ships or missiles. He seems to be a profound expert on the details of defense but I didn't hear much about offense. Deeply alarming.

Just a retired trucker here, but I've been preaching this for 20 years. That Adm. has it going on. he accurately lays out the Two Choices that Asian countries will face if the US shoots back or does not. The fallout from defeat in either case will cause a New Chapter in history to begin - with the US forced out of the western Pacific, perhaps all the way back to Pearl. The great economies of Japan and SK will become vassals to the PRC. The Philippines will close off US access to their land bases and Singapore will be like Hong Kong. India will become the First Line against continued Chinese expansion with profound risks. Perhaps worst of all for the US will be the likely failure of the US dollar to be the worlds' secure currency. This would cause hyperinflation in the US, and would cripple American power and prestige for a century or maybe forever. All American investments in Asia would be lost, both plant and cash assets. The stock market would crash as in 1929. Unemployment in the US would be off the charts. If we don't fight for Taiwan, we don't fight for ourselves and lose by default. If we fight for Taiwan, and lose for lack of missiles and ships, we lose everything we built from 1945 til now. The allies, the trade, the economies - everything.

As I watched this and listened closely to Adm Paparo, my son, a Lt. is leaving his job in Bremerton, WA helping to return is his first assignment, the USS Pennsylvania (SSBN 735), back into active status. He is driving to San Diego to start his new job, immediately, as the submarine liaison officer for the destroyer squadron assigned to the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). So much for a shore tour... Although, he has spent the last 18 months on land and above water while his boat is in dry dock. I'm glad that Adm. Paparo is the guy in charge of US forces in this part of the world. I've seen him talk on 60 Minutes and other places, but he really is a very impressive man. So educated in so many aspects of US and international policies, doctrine, economics and practices. First, 70% of all Chicom ships would fit Inside a US theater--one at a time, of course. So, 70% "Really" do Not natter. Admit that fact. "Reporters" write over and over about Huge numbers of Chicom missiles. Then they insist in writing about how many different missiles US has to counter them. Such a waste of energy. "Reporters" need to learn military and strategic history and geography. Chicoms import 80% plus of their energy, with 60% of that by super tanker. Chicom economy Was based on making goods and selling them to US and EU. Made in China--has been shutting down and reshoring to more cost effective and stable producers--that's the end for Chicoms. Meanwhile... There's 3 strategic waters that ships Must use to enter or exit China. All US, Australia and Japan will need to do is 100% blockade those waters, or "straits". Within the 1st month the Chicom economy will be in a panic: no fuel or food coming in (Chicoms import 20% of food and fertilizer). No exports going out, no cash coming in. Chicom economy collapses. Then, IF Chicoms attack those blockade ships or other "assets": there's the "Achilles heel": 3 gorges dam. The HUGE Achilles Heel of China that would deal a Massive death blow, no nukes required: 10% of all of China's electric gone and 400 Million Chinese dead in the Massive tidal wave of the Three Gorges Dam being taken out, and it would be the 400 Million who matter most. Three to four B-2 bombers each with 1-2 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator's (MOP) precision guided, 30,000-pound (14,000 kg) "bunker buster", or "dam buster" will stop Chicoms. Cheaper, faster and "Invisible". Chicoms are are, as we'd say in Texas, "All hat and no cattle."
