Hey Ward! Awesome interview!! My son is a Super Hornet WSO and a current TOPGUN instructor. A few months back some of the instructors were in Hawaii for some event. The at the time TOPGUN intel officer who’s friends with Admiral Paparo’s daughter was invited along with my son and others to Admiral Paparo’s quarters for dinner. Admiral Paparo wasn’t there at the time but his wife was a gracious host. My son said the walls of his residence are a virtual who’s who history of the Navy and a good time was had by all in attendance.

This is VERY interesting 🤔 It sounds like a great way to say, "we will do whatever it takes and whatever the President DECIDES to do... And yet, AT THE SAME TIME not put anything in writing that could be interpreted as being "hawkish or fear mongering". Unfortunately, "being combat ready" has also been adopted by China, and others. If there is parity, or something close to parity, then that is an unstable situation, not a stable one. If the USA can maintain a substantial or an overwhelming advantage, then that is true stability. Three countries with thousands of nuclear weapons each is an accident ready to happen at any time, a very catastrophic accident. It sets the stage for disaster.

Yet another example, in a long line of such, of the impressive and astonishing capability of our senior military leadership. The Admiral's competence and wisdom are palpable. It is hard to imagine a more capable person "at the helm",and yet, we know that sitting in other venues around the world, there are two to three DOZEN 4-star US military officers of comparable skill. Americans will all sleep better tonight being reminded of the quality of leadership we enjoy. The rest of world will sleep fitfully, if at all.

Extremely well said. Couldn't agree more. Pretty clear that despite spending a fortune, given ICBM/Nuclear triad costs, China's incredible investment in space, the US's non-Indo-Pacific obligations, and the overwhelming need for long-range/fast missiles, plus the lead time to rebuild ship-yards, plus the recent blunders (littoral/Zumwalt), plus the desire for unmanned everything, us Gen6 eventually ... wow. Glad I don't have his job! (brilliant explanation of Taiwan, btw]

Thank you, Mooch… A great program as usual. I’ve listened to your channel since the beginning. I am a former US Naval Flight Surgeon that also served on board the USS independence from 1980 to 1982 as the CAG - 6 Flight Surgeon. I was stationed at Naval station Cecil Field in Florida while ashore. I was assigned to VA 15, VA 87, both A-7 squadrons. I flew usually with VA 176, that had A-6’s… I flew usually in the KA-6D in the Right seat. Our CAG was Commander Tim Wright… (He retired as a Vice Admiral.) I also flew an EA-6B’s (VAQ-133) and S-3’s (VS-28). We had F-4’s on my first cruise( Indian Ocean 1980-1981) VF-33 and VF-102! Those squadrons transitioned after that cruise to F 14’s. On further work ups, we had VF- 14 and VF-32 F-14’s squadrons assigned to Independence. I never did get the fly in the F-4 or the F-14 as I did not go up to Oceana to get the check out that was necessary to ride in the backseat. Plus I was the “Attack Quack” and would have taken a lot or ribbing if I flew in a fighter… Keep up the great work!! Thank you!!

Great topic coverage. I do appreciate the admiral getting down in the weeds to discuss these topics. We don't often get that perspective. The missile inventory has always been a real measure of our preparedness AND the capability of our services to replenish our ships/aircraft as said supplies are expended. The other measure of combat power are actual number of hulls. As I recall, in December 1941, the US had over 900 ships. Today we have about 470 active and reserve US Navy ships. If quantity has a quality of its own, the balance in hulls (and sailors) is a concern in the ocean distances consideration. Time and distances are another play consideration we have always played. Hiding surface vessels from high eyes is a concern. I still have concerns about our capabilities due to our lacking in shipyards and capacity to build and repair our ships, a knock-on effect. Having lived and worked at both Mare Island and Long Beach Navel Stations, I miss seeing our work capability. Great discussion here.

Our industrial base is hollowed out and I don't sense any urgency or reasonable chance that we can bring it back meaningfully quickly enough. The Admiral is clearly a hero since he will be fighting without enough ships or missiles. He seems to be a profound expert on the details of defense but I didn't hear much about offense. Just discovered your channel and this interview with Admiral Paparo was my first watch. Being an Aussie, I have great interest in the IndoPacific areas and the major antagonist of the region, the PRC. I did notice the INDOPACOM banner with little ole Oz all big and plump front and centre, which was a relief to see, as it made me feel our 'little' nation was neither forgotten nor ignored, as it is, continuously, in the legacy US media. I, and I expect all Aussies are concerned that our close relationship with the US continues to grow and strengthen, in these dangerous times, and that the next USA administration keeps building on safe guarding our collective growth and safety in the IndoPacific. I certainly hope the extensive upgrades and new developments for naval ports and bases, to assist our friends from America, keeps moving ahead apace and that large docking ports may give safe harbour to the carriers and their battle groups around the huge Aussie coast. It will feel like WW2 again, (my parents, uncles, aunts, even grandparents served in WW2), when the US Navy had open access to our ports. I also think my government needs to build docks big enough to house carriers and our steel industry fire up near these docks to assist repairs. Everybody has been ignoring China's massive expansion across all fields till relatively recently. We should have started in earnest twenty years ago! But, everyone was too busy making money off China. Xi has made his intentions very clear, "This is the century of China." And Xi's vision is global. GOD BLESS AND PROTECT OUR NAVIES AND ALL MILITARY. 😅

Just a retired trucker here, but I've been preaching this for 20 years. That Adm. has it going on. he accurately lays out the Two Choices that Asian countries will face if the US shoots back or does not. The fallout from defeat in either case will cause a New Chapter in history to begin - with the US forced out of the western Pacific, perhaps all the way back to Pearl. The great economies of Japan and SK will become vassals to the PRC. The Philippines will close off US access to their land bases and Singapore will be like Hong Kong. India will become the First Line against continued Chinese expansion with profound risks. Perhaps worst of all for the US will be the likely failure of the US dollar to be the worlds' secure currency. This would cause hyperinflation in the US, and would cripple American power and prestige for a century or maybe forever. All American investments in Asia would be lost, both plant and cash assets. The stock market would crash as in 1929. Unemployment in the US would be off the charts. If we don't fight for Taiwan, we don't fight for ourselves and lose by default. If we fight for Taiwan, and lose for lack of missiles and ships, we lose everything we built from 1945 til now. The allies, the trade, the economies - everything.

I am an Air Force veteran from "the 60's", i.e.: the Vietnam era (F-4 Phantoms, B-52's). Thank you both for bringing me up to speed on what the US faces today as threats to our way of life, world peace and economic prosperity. I'm glad to see we have experts running our military (albeit, who must suffer DC swamp creatures). War is nasty. It's the ultimate in "man's inhumanity to man". Deterrence, the projection of utter fear, is the only thing that provides security internationally. I'd like to believe we still have people of the caliber of: Patton, Nimitz, MacArther and Bull Halsey to makes enemies "quake" at the very thought. Air corps visionaries like Billy Mitchell and Curtis LeMay as well as air crews with the 'intestinal fortitude' who flew the Enola Gay make a difference. My father was offshore Okinawa on April 1st, 1945 on LST 728. My generation, the baby-boomer's, died in Vietnam to the tune of almost 60,000.. What TR said about "speaking softly and carrying a big stick" still applies. PS: thank you for your service to our country as Veteran's Day once again approaches. Only those who've served know what it's really like.

Your interview with the Admiral is amazing. He is in the hot seat of a job I would not want. I don't watch the news for reasons which I need not mention, but I do keep my ear out for both national and world security. From my layman perspective, the Admiral layed the conversation out in completely understandable terms. The discussion you have with you guest's covering the personal military history is always fascinating. I love all of the content on your channel. On a side note I am a huge Tomcat fan, I thank you for your service. Fly Navy. 🇺🇸🇺🇸

Great to hear from INDOPACOM, and I like how you tied the command together by lashing the legacy WWII commands of CINCPAC,SWPAC, and Allied Forces in SE Asia under the Earl Mountbatten to give us all the size and scope of this crucial AOR. Admiral Paparo delivers the scoop on the challenges in this area, and gives us more compelling reasons for the more pounding on that drum for additional naval aviation assets. Play that funky music, Admiral.....and what a great kudos at the end, Mooch! 🏆

Mooch and Sam P, I am retired ex military natural Aussie and as such most interested in our regional affairs especially anything that can affect our current situation and ability to successfully progress relationships that improve life for all involved. Your interview and Sam’s responses are most informative and most realist, in my view, of our Aussie situation in the South Pacific and our relationships with both China and yourselves. Mooch please maintain your diligence in gaining these interviewee’s and thus the stream of information that keeps all of us informed. “Knowledge is Power” hopefully well applied for the ultimate benefit of all. Regards Andrew “AJ”.

Seems like we should take advantage of our allies abilities to build hulls at a faster and cheaper pace. Please correct me if im wrong, but it seems like creating the radar, guidance systems, and electronics in country is easier to ramp up than building infrastructure for hulls. We could push frigates like the constellation through allied shipyards with fitouts in the US.

Dude if Korea and the US partnered in building ships we would be making quality ships so fast

Another phenomenal discussion Ward. The Admiral definitely laid out the bigger picture and related pieces of the global puzzle very clearly. Thank you both for such a well thought out and honest interview.

Very important discussion, much appreciated as always Ward. I found something Admiral Paparo discussed at the 16:05 min mark concerning, regarding the "magazine depth" and impacts on said depth regarding, artillery shells, even HiMARS, JDAM's and AIM-120's etc. He mentioned America's partners, so that means us here in Ukraine, among others that have greater priority in the middle east or elsewhere. It seemed that the gist of what he was saying was, there is just not enough to go around and supply all concerned. This worries me as far as we are concerned in Ukraine. We need AIM-120 reloads for our MASAMS air defences for example. So if Europe was to out in a big order for all these projectiles - artillery shells, HIMARS reloads, AIM-120 reloads for NASAMS and more JDAM's etc - could the US industrial base at Lockheed Martin and Raytheon etc, handle this ? So my point is, is it time for American industry to up the game given the threats we already face here from Russia and the axis of evil and the threats over the horizon? Is it time for huge Pentagon contracts to be let ? That tonnage of ship building discrepancy between China (23 million tonnes) vs the USA (100,000 tonnes) speaks volumes.

@irongron But surely the Admiral is wrong. All the NAFO people have been telling me that we were sending only old outdated stuff that was due to be destroyed anyhow.
@irongronАй бұрын
@@mitchyoung93 Well the NAFO guys are correct for the most part, the Bradleys IFV's they're 90's models for example. (and can still take out a T-90, Ruzzia's "best" tank). F-16's, M1 Abrams, all old models too. The F-16's are not the latest block of Vipers. HIMARS ore not exactly new tech either. The ATACMS is old, the new unitary weapon for that is the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM). Uncle Sam offloads the old models and buys the newer stuff for their inventory. The MASAMS reloads are a different story, same goes for Patriots I guess too. That is new gear. Of course the artillery shells are also new production. But again, we get the existing older stocks and then the Pentagon replenishes their own stocks with the new production. But there is a backlog as the Admiral mentioned when it comes to giving out munitions to partners like us. Some serious contracts need to be let to fix this, Retired top brass like Lt. Gen Ben Hodges, or Gen. Phil Breedlove et. al. mention this regularly when doing the rounds on the mass media. I think this is the gist of what we can read into what the Admiral was saying. He is not retired yet, so I guess he cannot be as blunt or direct as the retired top brass.
