The chanting is beautifully ancient and surprised me that I loved it even though I prefer contemporary Christian music normally

The proper term is "Cantor" and not "Chanter." As an organist I'd find joining the orthodox church difficult, is there any reason why organs aren't used?

No, I believe that in the Orthodox Church the correct term is indeed "chanter." Also, the organ is primarily a western instrument.

@@tomandrew6586 I see, I don't see any reason why the organ shouldn't also be used in the East.

You claim to be an organist but, forgive me, you seem to be completely uniformed on music history. Orthodox music developed without the use of organs. Indeed many cultures have developed their own musical styles with their own instruments. Perhaps you should actually listen to Orthodox music. It is glorious.

@@tomandrew6586 Indeed, orthodox a Capella music is glorious, but so are many other styles of church music. All I'm saying is that being a organist I would find it difficult to join a Church which doesn't use the organ.

@@tomandrew6586 I think the word "chant" is derived from the Latin "cantare", so they're etymologically related.
