I agree with @agzrele, the parasitic power losses from all of those bevel drives, sliding shafts as well as the drive shaft to the front forks and chain must rob the engine of a lot of power, not to mention the maintenance aspect of it. Furthermore, the setup would add quite a lot of weight to the front of the bike, which is not ideal. We have a 2wd ebike here in New Zealand (mostly sold for farmers or hunters needing the extra traction in muddy conditions) and they report that having a driven front wheel makes the handling rather hard to manage, I imagine that this system would be even worse because it's purely mechanical so if the back wheel loses traction so does the front. It's an interesting engineering concept, but more of a novelty than anything. At least if you used a hub motor and battery, you could mount the battery in the rear, put a controller almost anywhere and the hub wouldn't add too much weight to the front, you could also have easily switchable power to the front with a easily built in traction control system.

I bought one, spent thousands on it, rode it 3 times, sold it for a loss. At times it was great, in the mud and tight single track... I thought it was worse. Had to remember to make sure the front end was pointed exactly where you want to go, every time the front end comes back down or it will throw you into the bushes or over a cliff. Different kind of riding, like changing from 4 stroke to 2 stroke... you have to ride it differently.

In certain situations these bikes are amazing, dry days evens out the field and they are a lot heavier. But fun none the less. Biggest issue is keeping the front end and bearing happy. LOTS of parts that can fail. And a clutch to adjust that can be a bitch, too tight and you blow bearing in the front hub.. etc.

Fun thing I've seen, someone back in the day made a 2wd by adding a hydraulic motor - the rear chain essentially drives a hydraulic pump which then moves the front wheel when needed. He briefly mentioned hydraulic pumps in his video, but not how they worked in this respect - I'd say it's as simple as a front electric motor... Without needing electricity

Hydraulic is definitely an interesting idea to drive the front wheel. With how powerful modern electric motors are and how efficient generators or even alternators can be though, I think going electric is a good move. Instant torque front and rear would be something else, and for a full electric setup would be as simple as dual hub motors.

I'd heard of these years ago and believe there was military applications and that it was mainly being developed for that. I'd imagine electric motors now would trump this design if technology is here now for it. Would be just as fast , could be full time 2x2, and totaly stealthy as nearly silent compared to a gas engine. Battery weight likely the main issue, but the tech is growing very rapidly and I'm sure the military is on the cusp of it if anyone is. Enjoyed the video 👍👍👍

@@slangneck6837 Ummm, yes. You could easily put high torque DC motor in there and have it run off of a separate battery pack that is kept charged by the drive system, or is driven by a beefed up version of the stock electrical system. It doesn't have to be able to pull the whole bike up a hill, just to assist it in times of need. I think any resistance to this idea is because people just don't want to let go of stuff. This is definitely a new take on 2WD bikes. I had a Rokon TrailBreaker back in the mid 1970"s. Rokon's are not "dirt' bikes though. They are slow and steady trail bikes for going where there is not a path. I think that they will go places the Christini will not, but the Christini is light years faster. The drive system was very different, too. The 2WD is full time and only cuts out on the front when the spring loaded clutch slips (by design). This seem very cool, and I wish it had been around when I was an active dirt biker, 30 years ago. LOL

I tested the Yamaha 2-Trac for Australasian Dirt Bike Magazine, and the story was re-printed in one of the US mags as well. I liked it, but many of the top riders that rode it didn't. I think this may have been because it tracked so well in slippery corners rather than sliding. They were all used to steering with the throttle and back wheel in those conditions. Only 250 were made, and only 20 came to Australia, none went to the US. At least one of the Aussie 2-Tracs was sold by a dealer here to somebody in the USA. They couldn't be road registered in Austrlia as they did not have a compliance plate and were twice the price of a conventional WR450. They also came with top of the line Ohlins suspension front and rear and an Ohlins steering damper.

It looks pretty cool but just remember those extra 6 kg (13.2lb) are mostly rotating mass with a fair bit of it being unsprung weight. Both of which will make if feel heavier then 6kg (more like 10-15 kg) and dramatically effect handling. I also wonder what effect the two drive shafts have spinning adjacent to the engine and having a torque effect on the steering would do to over all handling? All that being said bike set up is a game of give and take to improve in one area you usually have to give up in another area and for all the negatives I’ve mentioned you are gaining traction which in some circumstances is very hard to come by😀 Hopefully one day i get to try it out

2 of my 3 electric bikes are All Wheel Drive. Its 2 independent system. 2 Motors, 2 controllers, 2 batteries, displays, 2 accelerators, one for each thumb. I also have 3 motors on one my bike which is 3 everything. 2 thumb-throttle on the right and one on the left. The 2 on the right are the rear hub motor and the mid-drive motor and the one on the left it's the front motor. I used many combination. The thing with all wheel drive is the front wheel is directional. So at low speed when you are turning for example you want to be careful and use very little throttle on the front motor because the bike will pull the bike this way and you will go the other way. So basically when I turn at low speed, I only use the rear motor and when I get more straight I add the front motor. At least in the beginning when you learn and you are not used to it. Note that my experience is on the road and snow. Off road folks have more skill will probably get that in seconds. Humbly!

@@grumpyg9350, понял, здорово. А за сколько примерно брали, сколько по времени пользуетесь и были за время пользования какие - либо поломки? Как с доступностью запчастей и возможностей ремонтопригодности и сервисного обслуживания? 🤔🤔🤔

@@ACMulti100I don’t remember the cost. I think it was around 5,000.00 usd. The only issue was the rapid deterioration of the rubber bellows that covered the telescopic tubes. They changed the formula of the rubber and that took care of the Bellows issue. I drove it for about two years as hard as I could. I probably put about 10,000 miles on it both on an off-road equally. I crashed the bike several times, but nothing ever happened to the Christini. It has a lever on the triple clamp that disengages the unit so that you could ride it on the pavement. I drove it both on flat track dirt type roads, as well as, of course, difficult terrain, mud, Sand and rock. Going down hills I didn’t even have to worry about locking up the rear tire. I would just squeeze the front brake and the thing would stop. The front tire was driven by the rear tire so that it was very difficult while going downhill to lock up the front tire. While going uphill on steep terrain, I would just lean as far forward and that coupled with the torque 572 and automatic clutch, would creep up any hill at a very low speed very easily. it did add a little weight but I just adapted and it was fine. I removed the cooling fan on the radiator and ran a different coolant that boiled and a much higher temperature so that I could have room for a 3 and a half gallon gas tank. I ran a lot of long trips through the mountains and deserts and needed the extra fuel cap capacity. Christini provided the fuel tank too. Maintenance was simple. Keep the moving parts greased and everything was happy. I stripped the frame to bare myself and sent it to them, got it back in a month, and put It back together myself. It’s hard to explain to someone the capabilities, even my friends, but it was the best riding experience I’ve ever had in 30 years.

A nifty way to get power to the front wheel but I imagine the parasitic power losses would be huge and all those mechanical linkages and bevel gears to shim/adjust and the mess of the drive chain etc. It would be far simpler to mount a battery somewhere and put an electric hub on the front wheel, probably weigh less as well. We have 2WD electric off road bikes here in NZ, good in the mud apparently, not much good anywhere else.

I wonder if the idea of using hydrolic pump and hydrolic motors at the wheels both front and back would gain anything.

@@RL-un3yq all the extra weight really made proper technique difficult, and technique goes much further in getting you where you want to go. if you were only doing sand riding i could see the benefit of it but overall im better on a regular bike.

It could have an adjustable option for a constant power delivery to the front wheel. Ie. from 1 to 20%. This could improve traction, even in street bikes.

Christini started with mountain bikes Ober 30 years ago I remember him and the bikes at some National off road bicycle association N.O.R.B.A It wasn't til years later he applied it to motor cycles.

I wish Christini would make an AWD adventure version to compete with bikes like the BMW GS, Triumph Tiger, and some day the DSR/X once Zero gets their range issue resolved. Seems like Christini has their patents and government contracts and is content with their little niche. Seems like a shame though I think they could be huge in the world wide adventure market if they would get off their laurels. Fat and happy is all good for a short time but it’s also a slow death.

It's an engineering cul-de-sac, but it was a great idea in the 80's. Electric hub motors and flywheel generators are already being developed.

Looks rad. One thing to think about is when, not if, it fails. Will it break and let the rim still spin? Or will it break and lock up sending the rider over the bars?

Not everything is an if, not when. I’d argued this system is less complicated than a modern 4 stroke.

@@alecnull i agree to disagree. Rotating parts eventually fail. Just a matter of time. Dirt bikes are treated roughly, so just a explanation of what keeps the rim from locking up on failure?back rim lock ups dont throw you off.

from what I'm reading, it uses one way clutches which are located in the front hub, so yeah, unless the failure is in the front hub itself (which seemss very unlikely looking at the design) it looks like it will still let the rim freewheel

To be honest a low wattage electric hub motor built into the front wheel would be simpler and only the synchronization issues would have to be sorted out.You don't need much power to have a positive effect.
