"Chronic expectation of danger" is a good summary. Ive heard of another term called "Catastrophic thinking". I understand we have the power to manifest our thoughts into reality, so with this in mind, as traumatized people, we tend to manifest what we fear the most. A Self-fulfilling prophesy, we ruminate too much on what we dont want. I have noticed this catastrophic thinking tendency in myself, it has mostly subsided now after much work and conscious application of meditative techniques. When I was in the depths of this sort of condition, my imagination would run wild with anxiety inducing scenarios that would literally make my heart pound with fear. This is why a 180 degree turnabout in what we tend to ruminate on, an awareness of what our habitual tendencies are, is paramount to healing from trauma, there is no substitute for this, we have to become consciously responsible for what we are up to with regards to where we let our attention go. Even if we remove ourselves from these traumatic influences, we tend to keep the trauma alive as it echoes around our psyche and haunts our consciousness. Distance from all identified abusers is most important.

Yes, the concept of the self-fulfilling prophecy is important. We manifest our core beliefs about life and ourselves into our lives. We will have parts of us which think in terms of worst case scenarios/catastrophising as a way to protect ourselves from the trauma happening again. Freud talked about repetition compulsion - there's an interesting article here: www.simplypsychology.org/repetition-compulsion.html As long as we are still holding some unprocessed trauma we will be influenced by it, consciously or subconsciously. The more it is worked through the less energy/attention needs to go to the catastrophising as the underlying fear has subsided.
