You’re NOT boring, your videos aren’t boring !! Your vids are fantastic. To those of us that don’t model O gauge or Lionel, it’s fascinating how they’re put together and how you service them. I totally enjoy your building and interior videos 👍🏽 Good stuff - Keep it coming !!

You are NOT boring, Norm! It's so fascinating to follow your narration and experience the verbalized thought processes of a certifiable mechanical genius at work. It's all pure freaking magic to me, but it's a little like listening to a symphonic conductor dissect the score of a Beethoven or Mozart concerto! Keep going Norm, it's the music of the spheres!

Norm, you are NOT boring. I thank you so much for evry episode you put out. I know the YT analytics will show gaps in people watching but that is okay because for me, if I cannot sit down to watch in one session I am going to finish and want to ingest every moment. Re-watch them all again. You are truly an inspiraiton, even more so in preserving and keeping life to models that most of our "modern" modelers just want the newest, best, flashy features. I love the realism, the details, the thought going into every model. Those 2000-2010 models are spot on. Thank you again for all you do!

I really like how cut and dry and “real” your videos are. I can’t stand those who try to put on a show with every upload. Makes it hard to watch. And of course your modeling is excellent and serves as an inspiration for many including me!

Norm, I can't tell you how much I enjoy watching and following your modification technics as well as your creative eye in building model layouts. You are making me think about purchasing a proper 3D printer since so many manufacturers do not support their product after so many years.. Watching your presentation on these cams was just so interesting since for what ever reason Lionel gave us 2 chuffs on so many models. Of course DCS gave you the option to choose how many chuffs per revolution you want but not good ole' Lionel. Thank you again Norm for your videos, so many of us out here really appreciate and enjoy them!!!

Norm, thank you so much. I’m not sure I’ve ever enjoyed an O Gauge video more than this one. Yeah, of course I’m biased in favor of the B&O subject matter, but that’s beside the point. There are a variety of people out there with a variety of interests. Among them are some with a thirst to understand how O gauge engines work, how to diagnose problems and how to make repairs and upgrades. You understand all that and share your knowledge with your viewers - for free. We are lucky to have you spending your personal time taking us on a detailed tour of disassembling an engine, describing electronics, functions, interfaces and how they work. There is no amount of detail you could go into that I would find tedious or boring. The further you go into making tutorials the more time I want to spend watching them.

Hey Norm, I’m mainly an HO B&O guy. Seeing the title O scale EM1 caught my attention. I was absolutely enthralled with your disassembly and explanation of the workings of this model. I was also fascinated with your version of the 3d printed chuff actuator. I feel the same way you do about the smoke. As cool as it looks, there’s a price to pay for it. Faulty elements and oily surfaces creeping all over. If you ever did a private tour, I’d be very interested. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with everyone. I learned a lot.

This is a great video, thank you Norm for your work in making these videos very educational for us. I wish I understood John Will's Super Chuffer add-on electronics to TMCC better. I also think you're making of a '4-chuff' cam to replace Lionel's dumb ole '2-chuff' cam is awesome. To me, its more reliable than the reed switch process. I have this same locomotive, bought it in 2000, but I had it upgraded to full Legacy with a prototypical whistle. This whistle however, though not prototypical, is one of the finest whistles from Lionel 2000-2005 era I've ever heard. It's very haunting.

I was repairing a Williams O scale Hudson and was also mystified how they put the driver/gearbox together. The unit had a lot of slop and play but I could not figure out how to take it apart. Like you concluded. The factory must have used specialized jigs for assembly

Hey Norm, have you used the chuff generator from Gunrunner John as well? I see you use the super chuffer but with cam or the reed switch with the ERR stuff. I just ordered one of the generators along with the super chuffer to go in a consolidation I have. (early TMCC)

I still have one in my old Y3. I could never really get a consistent chuff rate. I prefer a driver based chuff so I can get the phasing right on the dead centers. I still think it’s a cool product.

Great video! I have a Legacy J1a and can not figure out what is wrong with my smoke unit. It has cylinder smoke and stack smoke. I recently replaced the resistors from Lionel and now smoke leaks out everywhere. It leaks out of the sides and also from the main smoke side through the cylinder smoke side and out the air intake of the cylinder smoke side. I replaced the gasket and still get leaks. I’m really about to throw in the towel on smoke for the reasons you mentioned, but it’s a cool gimmick to show off. Any suggestions? Go figure Lionel does not make the board or parts anymore. Thanks for your help!

Aw man I wouldn’t know much about that one. That was the first J1a w/Legacy right? Almost sounds like your stack is misaligned.

@@normstrains I think it’s the one from around 2017. I tried it with the shell off and it leaks pretty good. Some of the tapped screw holes in the smoke unit bowl are slightly stripped. I may try to get a new one and see if the smoke unit board can get a better seal by tightening the screws more. I just wonder if the board is warped.
