Thank you for a wonderful ramble about St. Jerome and the vulgate. My copy arrived last week and yes, it is a most wonderful edition. God bless from Switzerland, Raphael

I love this channel. Derek is a good man! I’m looking forward to the (I think) Church Latin pressing of the pre-challoner Douay Rheims in a single volume! Whenever that sees release, it will be the only Bible I travel with and consult for the rest of my God-given life. I love this beautiful edition of the Vulgata. Great video!

@anthonyvillalobos3892 Thank you. The pre-challoner Douay-Rheims is a sort of a Western version of Eastern Orthodox English .

It's a beautiful edition of the Clementine vulgate. For me, the Vulgate is as good a refresher in Latin as any, because it is very clear and very easy. Cicero and Caesar just put me to sleep after a couple paragraphs, as they have always done.

I wonder if one had attended a Catholic school, one might have started with reading Jerome rather than Caeser. Unfortunately, by the time my kids were old enough for school, and I sent them to Catholic schools, Latin was yet another victim of Vat II, I guess.

++Cranmer was so affected by the rhythm of his daily reading of the Latin Services that he brought over their felicities into much of the BCP’s language. BTW, great talk!

Beautiful edition of the Vulgate. I have the 1901 Biblia Sacra hardcover from Church Latin and it is wonderful. How are you liking the Orthodox Study Bible? I’m not Eastern Orthodox, but it has become my main Bible due to it’s Septuagint translation with New Testament included. I also do quite like the articles and commentary.

@LNR65 I read the offices in the kjv, but the OSB is my go-to for just about everything else.

It's interesting that the Western Catholic Church follows the Old Latin for the Lord's Prayer, rather than the Vulgate.

@@dalecaldwell The USCCB's lectionary is a good example of this. It still uses the original NAB translation, even when the revised edition has been out for a few decades now.

You, sir, are not at all far from being a Catholic. I also like your laid-back manner, sipping coffee. As A Catholic, I have little-to-no disagreement with what I've heard from you so far.
