So Many great songs by The Church. Ripple somes to mind. Best albums: Priest=Aura., and then Starfish and Heyday

Heyday is a perfect album. I wish I could have seen them on that tour.

Yes and in that order too! "Grind" is so good and it rarely gets talked about. Heydey as an overall album I like better than Starfish but the songs that ARE great are iconically great like "Reptile" and Under the Milky Way of course and then you have blood money and destination two more fantastic songs. there's no way you can put an album with those songs third in a list and you definitely can't put Priest = Aura, a true masterpiece from begining to end and as a whole, 2nd.

A timeless classic in a great version. Under The Milky Way is one of the songs I can listen to hundreds of times (and play it also myself on the guitar) and never get tired of. The Church is in my eyes one of the best bands ever - completely underrated, especially here in Europe.

Kudos to Kilbey for still performing; he's close to 70 y.o., and it's quite admirable to see him out there still. But he seems to be struggling here. His voice is a bit off-pitch and off-rhythm. The rest of the band seems tight enough, but I sure miss seeing Marty Wilson Piper and Peter Koppes play. Even though I still would have loved to see this live, I am actually far more interested in Kilbey's collaboration with Martin Kennedy than his work with The Church at this point. I think the only one left from the old band other than Kilbey is the drummer.
@vidsforsquids Жыл бұрын
It’s live and what you call “off-rhythm” is something a lot of singers do when performing live and playing an instrument at the same time. Imagine singing this song as many times as he has. The same ole gets old. I’m confident he could walk into a studio and throw that vocal down with ease the same as we’ve heard it played multitudes of times.
@ivanl.8201 Жыл бұрын
@@vidsforsquids I definitely get that, and Kilbey is still going to stay as one of my absolutely most favorite musicians and songwriters of all time, regardless of this particular performance. And yes, it is live, but what makes this hard is that this song was written way back when Richard Ploog was drumming for them, and his drumming was so tight and almost machine-like. It was almost like having a darn metronome behind you. And Ploog left decades ago, but that tight 4/4 drumbeat is still there along with a very propulsive bass line, and I personally don't think such dialed-in rhythm section benefits Kilbey's poetic, stream-of-consciousness style as much. At least, not in this performance. It's just my personal opinion, and maybe it would have been a little better if their drummer sat this one out or played some sort of a looser shuffle. But I understand what you're saying, and they're playing here in the States (Seattle), and sadly, outside of a few select places in the US, so many still don't know who they are, and maybe only know them for this song and for "Reptile". Maybe they know them for "Metropolis", too. And I could see Kilbey in particular being bored and tired of being expected to play this at every US venue b/c not many people know the band's catalog all that well.

No, they left Kilbey. Willson-Piper left ten years ago. Koppes left a couple years ago. Rumor has it that Powles got stuck in Australia because of visa issues.

@@Chris-yk1mm Why did they leave?
@BlumpkinPrince3 ай бұрын
@@RogerBrenon My understanding is that Marty WP left because of some disagreements with Steve about money and labels... he didn't officially leave the band, but ghosted them until they realized he wasn't coming back. I think Peter Koppes left because he was tired of it, seemed more amicable with him. Tim Powles still the drummer.
