“Why aren't R.o.S.E BLUE or any of their solo MVs here?” This video is only about major group comeback music videos, meaning videos that got a full promotion period (industry advertised album, music show live stages, promotion franchising). "DÉJÀ VU" is both a brand collab *and* a fully promoted comeback with everything else I mentioned. "R.o.S.E BLUE" is not, and neither are the solo MVs. Including them begs the question of every special release video they’ve made, and that’s not what this video is about. This video is about the major promoted videography, otherwise there’s no way to track their evolution.

You know Mera, videos like these are really entertaining and fascinating to watch. I really enjoy listeting to you talk about your favorite or otherwise K-POP groups couse it gives me a glimpse of how other people view some songs and artists. I personally am not into a lot of music that comes out nowdays. It just doesn't get to me as much. That's not to say I don't enjoy any music that came out in modern age, far from it, I just find myself liking older songs a lot more. As for K-POP; I did listen to K-POP songs before I just don't find myself liking some of the recent songs of majoraty of artists. I do like Red Velvet songs, they cater to my personal music tastes a lot. That old school 70s to 80s to 90s styles to and references to art, it's all very apealing to me. Not to mention the girls are incredibly talented in their vocal and dance ability. Vocals are very important to me, it's one of the ways I can come to like a certan music artist. For example I really like Jung Daehyun of former K-POP band B.A.P, his vocals are just amasing to me. He may not be the best there ever was but he is most certanly a great vocalist. His voice to me just....wow like he can literally sing a love song(He did btw) and I would be over the moon. He also has pretty good MV moments where he eather makes your heart melt with how cute he can be, or he straight up makes you pause and go: ,,What?!''. Now Daehyun isn't my 'bias' if you will, he was more of a 'wrecker' and Yongguk(the former leader of B.A.P)was my 'bias' (Ehem still is a little bit XD). I just really like B.A.P they have pretty epic and great songs. I would definately recomend listening to their songs if you haven't, especially their older albums like Warrior, Power, One shot and First sensibility, they have some good songs their. I mean even their later ones like matrix and No Mercy.

I think BOCA will forever be my favorite Dreamcatcher mv simply because of the colors (if for nothing else) that perfectly highlight the group’s duality. The neon mixed with the black and white of the masks and outfits and the almost dirty, urban scenes in contrast to the clean ethereal scenes around the tree just does something to my brain that I absolutely love.

That description of BEcause was so wild, but so accurate too! BEcause is my favorite Dreamcatcher MV, but I always focused more on the storytelling or physical directing of it, not the cinematography and intention behind it. This was actually really cool to see it in a new light. BEcause has always felt really polished to me, in the way it takes the idea of the song and personifies it beyond just telling a story the way earlier music videos like Chase Me and Good Night would. It was honestly super fun to watch a video of you talking about something that you genuinely enjoy, it really showed! Here's looking forward to Dreamcatcher's next comeback and what it might bring!

One thing that I absolutely love about how you framed Dreamcatcher's visual "ages" is that they can be interpreted as representative of not only their personal growth and evolution, but also their evolution in comparison to the k-pop scene. In the pioneer age, Dreamcatcher is deliberately drawing attention to how different they are from "typical" k-pop. Much of the glitz and polish is avoided, and the dances feel like afterthoughts within the video. They want to set themselves apart at all costs. By the classical age, there's increased polish and bright hair, and many more of the typical k-pop video aspects exist. They've made peace with themselves as part of the industry and choose to bring out the aspects of traditional k-pop that they enjoy. To me, although they've increased in popularity by this point, classical age videos feel more like a typical nugu k-pop video than pioneer age videos do. In the golden age, Dreamcatcher confidently claims their place in the industry, not only as an offbeat girl group but as all-around artists. The girls seem most like goddesses in this era, with their long dresses and stunning imagery. The videos very much have the feel that they've finally made it and they're fully self-actualized. By the renaissance era, Dreamcatcher is established enough that they can turn away from some of the "typical" music video standards again. They can mess around and be meta, but now as a group that's seen it all and made it out the other side. It's such good symmetry to their journey. Also you are so right about Maison. YES it's somewhat a retread, YES the CGI can't sustain everything they are asking it to do, and YES it is absolutely amazing. It's fantastical and fun and an absolute romp to view.
@fluffystuff5002 жыл бұрын
On the subject of Maison, I'm really happy that someone else genuinely has fun with that video while being able to acknowledge that the CGI could use work. Maison isn't perfect, but it's fun and entertaining. The scene where that statue turns into a skeleton will always be super cool to me.

This is a solid analysis. I'm a film school graduate and so I didn't really learn much but I'm lazy and so I'm happy that someone made a video to talk about the art of the MVs themselves. I rewatch videos from all eras often not just because I enjoy the songs but because of the artistic choices made in the MVs. If I had any advice for those who want to learn more about film it would be to listen to those with passion about it. The truth is that there is no official right or wrong opinion about it and while you can learn a lot by studying film theory(it's amazing rabbit hole if you have the time!) it's not required knowledge to enjoy film. Oh and pause MVs more often. There is always something that you haven't seen before because of how fast scenes change. Like, there's a moment in You & I where you can see outside of a window and it's either raining or snowing. This moment is perhaps 2 seconds long and very easy to miss. I only slightly disagree with the analysis of Odd Eye. Tbh I feel like the MV was edited the way it was because of the need for the performance video to have a decent amount of unique footage. Prior to Scream, the performance videos(What doesn't even have one!!) were really just Dreamcatcher in a random room dancing in the MV costumes. So more of the footage could be used in the MV itself and there was no need to disengage the choreo from the MV as much. The Odd Eye performance video is actually one of the nicest looking I've ever seen. 😂 I agree that Queen What is underappreciated. I just saw a video today calling What the least visually exciting Dreamcatcher MV and the comments lit the creator up. There was no malice intended but the creator was just wrong. What is my favorite title track and tbh Alone In The City is my favorite EP. I love it enough to watch the Japanese video and all the stages almost daily. Hell, when I move I'm dedicating a space to making a display specifically for Alone In The City. I found the snowglobe and several other important props. Insane fangirling aside, I think that the fact that What isn't performed anymore is why it is less popular. I've been an Insomnia since November 2020(Seven Spirits is the last performance) and they have not performed it at any concert, online or in person, since then.

renaissance era to me is them doing a victory lap. they know theyve grown so much, their identity is so solid now, when they did BEcause it reminded me of a self aware redo of chase me or fly high type styles and then maison has the same self awareness but now with nods to boca and scream. ugh i just love how much fun theyre having because they TRUST themselves. when someone is experimenting without a lot of confidence and is begging you to be on board it shows and i feel like renaissance era is not that at all, they believe in what theyre selling and it makes me believe and its so FUN and new but still them.

I know this video wasn't about narrative, but I just want to say that I feel like your distinction between the pioneer era and the classical era is actually reflected very strongly in the narrative. Chase Me through Piri - the Nightmare series - makes one full story, but I think there's a strong line between Fly High and You and I related to how the story is communicated. Good Night occurs pretty much immediately after Chase Me and Fly High is a prequel (hence the album name), but all three of those MV's are basically exposition: they are establishing the characters and the basis of the story, such as how the nightmare world works. As such most scenes are relatively literal and concrete, and we have a shared location between all three MV's. From You and I onward, however, the story is communicated very differently; now, everything is drenched in metaphor, it's extremely difficult to tell what's "actually happening", and purposefully so, since the story is paranormal in nature and reality isn't meant to be absolute. It takes much more thinking to unravel what happens in each MV, and the story is often communicated as ideas rather than concrete statements. I think the transformation of the MVs aesthetically goes hand in hand with that, as now MVs are less tied to telling a story directly and have more space to convey the plot in ways that fit their own aesthetic identity.

Its just really nice to hear someone passionate about Dreamcatcher and all the other artistic work going on behind the scene. And despite what you said, I feel like I definitely learned something from this video! Like the ways that lighting, camerawork, editing, costuming etc. can all enhance the cohesiveness of a story/video/concept. So much more goes into these 3 minutes videos than us regular fans realize, so thank you at least for shedding light on the fact that is more than just getting the members dressed up and then pointing a camera at them. Yet another incredibly edited, narrated and just well written video of Dreamcatcher! As many of the comments say, your dodging disbandment video was a big reason for me getting into Dreamcatcher so thanks for not only making these but sharing them as well!
@jamescurfman32842 жыл бұрын
Yes, agreed. There are LOADS more things that go into these videos than we even know of. What we see as three to maybe four minutes of entertainment takes the group two days to film. That's not even mentioning all the time before that like vocal practices learning the song and all its parts, then learning all the choreo and all those separate parts, then putting it all together (and that is just for the group members; there is more done in post-production that the ladies may not even be aware of, which is why it is so fun to watch them react to their own MVs...). :)

The deja vu video has enamoured me for longer than I could remember. The grading is perfectly balanced. The desaturated tones look gloomy and forlorn, but never washed out. The saturation radiates opulence and dignity, even in times of rage and betrayal. AND!! THE!! SYMMETRY!!! The cinematography lets the eyes wander, linger upon every little detail. Especially (21:20), the subtlety with which the woman holding the sword is obscured, and the shot illuminates the fallen woman in hues of blue and white. This muted shift of power shown solely through lighting is so fucking cool to me. I have cried to this music video. Several times. Loved the way you looked at how DC grew up in term of MVs. Its good to know that I'm not the only one looking at DC grow not just in songs but in the MV also. Fun fact: the confetti in Scream MV is actually dust particles. The girls had some hard time because of all the dust.

no one does it like deukae in terms of cinema. loona might rival them on visual messaging and colors in some music videos, and have a bit of a better story imo, but dreamcatcher has some incredible camerawork.

I've worked in the film industry for a decade and I love seeing such evolution in ones work, especially about my favourite group. Marvellous video :)

Perfect analysis 💞 I love how Dreamcatcher chooses to experiment with every comeback. They have a solid dark concept. But in every video I've seen (even their non-title track MVs), they manage to change up the tone while staying true to their dark concept. I enjoy watching their videos to look for little references, visual metaphors and "easter eggs".

i could also talk about them at length but ultimately it all boils down to "i fucking adore dreamcatcher"

A video talking about cinematography when all of Mera's videos are beautifully edited. Well crafted, just like her in-depth analysis. No one does this better than Mera. Thanks Mera, for everything.

I love the black outfits in “You and I” literally my favorite music video outfits I’ve ever seen from ANY kpop group. Honestly iconic

One more thing about the BEcause video. Whether consciously or subconsciously, they referenced a LOT of the older MVs, most glaringly Good Night, Fly High and Boca. The Hotel entrance scene also brings Chase Me to mind and to this day I still want to see if all the keys in the background are to room 808. I did a whole analysis on the BEcause MV and it's fascinating seeing the callbacks. Also hard agree on Odd Eye's editing. I've been trying to make a lore dump video on the Dystopia trilogy and parsing Odd Eye's story is hard as balls because of the editing.

I've been craving a video like this from you for a while! As usual, this is interesting, clever and nuanced and makes my neurons regenerate. Also, you actually got me into Dreamcatcher, which was the best kpop decision I've ever made

I genuinely do not understand how you always manage to describe in such detail and clarity the things that I love about each MV but I've never really thought about what exactly catches my eye about the MV. It's like you describe things that I've always agreed with/personally thought, but never had the right words to actually call them. Even with the MVs that aren't particularly my favorite (just personal taste), you manage to find parts of them that I never thought about before and make me think "huh, I can't believe I missed that." The way you describe the good and the bad of whatever your video is about (the music, the cinematography, the outfits, etc.) is always so compelling and immersive.

You said I wouldn’t learn anything. I learned that 14 year old Mera was Goth😂. No your ability to expound on imagery and put into words why we love it remains unparalleled.

This is such a good video. Very well done and I can't imagine the amount of work that went into it. Thank you for making such a detailed celebration and analysis of Dreamcatcher's music video cinematography. I understand making videos about the industry could be stressful and exhausting, so I'm glad you're making content about the things you actually enjoy. Your words here have almost a poetry to them at times. Very lovely and enjoyable all around.

"And a big fucking sword" love it. I think your analysis is spot on. In the What mv, there's one beautiful scene where Yoohyeon lies on the bed and goes upside down shot that turns into warp speed with chorus of the song hitting hard. Brilliant shot. Enjoyed watching this.
