What really struck me about the solo shots this music was the sense that they didnt have enough to do, if that makes sense? In past mvs there were bags to whip around and a tank to lay on and popcorn to throw all in one shot, this time around we had three shots of Jisoo raising the mask to her face in the exact same way bc there werent any other props to interact with and tell a story with. The scenes felt sparse, they wouldve been beautiful as photoshoots or just shorter segments (like ocean goddess!jisoo in ddu du ddu du)

Besides already heard lyrics by Blackpink and underwhelming chorus I realized what else bugs me about Pink Venom. It feels like they took inspo from famous artists and rappers from 90s and early 2000s and still tried to fit into kpop regular song...and with that production it didn't work. Also the song is about venom/poison at least title is and yet even MV doesn't follow it regardless of budget. Jisoo wears mask and have some bits on her hand, Rosé carries a black heart in one scene but everything else looks like regular MV with fashion brands. I genuinely wish they moved from phrase of "being bad girl who is rich" cause they have enough supportive fandom (even too supportive) to talk about something different, they're in their mid 20s. This is probably why I appreciated Lovesick girls and On the ground. Also I hope they stop using this amount of samples, no wonder why people feel their music is the same. I've said in on another channel, Pink venom could've easily ended on The Album and there would be no difference.

After Lovesick Girls, I was honestly disappointed that they were forced back into the DDDD mold. Lovesick Girls had a similar "formula" to their other songs, but I think it did a few things differently enough 1) it has an actual Chorus with lyrics that aren't just repeating the title of the song and nonsense words. 2) it had more of a rock sound, and it actually sounded like a new style from them. Like something from before DDDD, where they tried different sounds and styles. 3) it had interesting lyrics that you could read as much or as little into as you wanted. Their DDDD songs are always about how they're rich/cool/scary , so I appreciated Lovesick Girls being different In that regard. With Pink Venom they went "whole hog" back into the DDDD formula, and it's honestly almost becoming a joke at this point. There are things I like about the song, but I couldn't stop thinking about what would happen next: "oh here comes Jennie with a rap, and now that she's done, here comes Lisa, prechorus by Rosé and - who would have guessed - Jisoo sings the other part of the prechorus? I wonder if they're going to switch lines in the prechorus after the second JenLisa rap verse? What nonsense are they going to put in the final break down? Oh, "Rattattata"? I see". I'm still hoping and wishing for the day we get another "Playing with Fire", or "Stay" or even "As if it's your Last", (or Lovesick Girls) but after waiting 2 years and getting DDDD ver. 4.0, I'm not sure we'll ever see that day. The Ddu-Ddu derivatives do too well - they get so many views - that there's no reason to just not repeat the same thing over and over. Some people might like it, but I'm honestly over it at this point. Edit to split up the wall of text 😅 Edit2: just heard Shut Down, and... well I'm out. If I hear people say that their next song is different, I might check it out, but for now I'm out. Who knows? Maybe I'll feel different in 2 years when the next comeback is out.

Tell me you didn't listen to the video in it's entirety without telling me you didn't listen to the video in it's entirety. Mera literally explained at the end that this is what they do. You get the hype song as a pre release (just as HYLT) and then you get the brilliant title track when the album drops (just like LSG). I can understand if the song isn't your taste but the fact that they have been releasing the same song over and over again (according to you), why would you keep tuning in to their music? Like I really need someone who thinks this way to explain it to me because for me, if I don't like a certain artist or their music I don't listen to it at all.
@JokerCrowe2 жыл бұрын
@@ashliegh115 Oh no, I know that this is a pre-release, but between dddd and Lovesick Girls they only had those dddd derivatives (ktl and hylt). Like I said, I was super happy when Lovesick Girls dropped, because it was different, but that's the only song so far that's been any indicator that they plan on leaving the dddd sound. When they went back to the dddd sound for this song, I was disappointed, because I thought they might break out of it, since Lovesick Girls was so different. And yes, it's absolutely possible that they're going to drop something different to contrast this one, but can we say for certain that it's what they're going to do? As for why I'm listening to this song; part of me was hoping it would be different from dddd, and I've really liked Blackpink up to this point. Boombayah, Whistle, Playing with Fire, Stay, As if it's your last, even dddd are all super solid songs. I'm not someone who drops a group because they have One song I didn't like, but since this is becoming a pattern, I'm very close to just giving up on them. I'm also not someone who listens to music I don't like, but I thought I would give them another chance since Lovesick Girls was so good. It's fine if other people like their music, I'm happy for you if you like their dddd songs, but if this is the pattern we're going to have, I'm probably just going to skip every pre-release, and just listen to every Other BP song. The Lovesick Girls eqivalent. And if they keep taking 2 years between comebacks, and I'll only listen to half their songs, eventually I'm probably going to just drop the group. You can disagree with me, but since this video was talking about what Mera thought about the song, I thought I would share my thoughts.

I'd advise you to keep the word EP (+LP), out of your vocabulary when talking about K-Pop. The equivalence of EP = Mini Album and LP = Full Album has never existed in practicality, you can find from the beginning 1st gen full album with 7 tracks, that slips into and appears repeatedly in 2nd gen, 3rd and 4th so no, this is not an extended EP, it's a full album from a confused industry that doesn't get it's labels straight. This is not coming from the West. We've seen: • Single albums with 1, 2 and 3 songs; • Mini albums with 3-9 songs; • Full albums with 7+ songs. It's been ridiculous seen people trying to downplay this as a full album while ignoring it's definition, or lack thereof, in K-Pop. And yes, I do agree they need more music and should drop 15-20 tracks, this is simply a rant about labels and "they just got a mini album 😜".

@astralwishes132 жыл бұрын
“come on goldilocks” GOD i love your commentary your intro was so valid and highlighted the issues i’ve had with blackpink fans recently. they seem to use the “blackpink punching bag” excuse for EVERY SONG. sure, blackpink get hate for dumb reasons, but they can’t seem to differentiate that from genuine valid criticism and all it does is make them look bitter. pink venom was not a good song in my opinion, but i’m glad that for some people it was worth the wait and very good. i’m happy for them. my issue is when they try to say that if another group i liked released the song i would like it. that bothers me for two reasons. 1) it implies that i don’t ‘like’ blackpink. i do, if i didnt i wouldn’t be watching their content. criticism of a group does not equate to disliking them. in fact, learning how to point out flaws in a group you love is a great skill. 2) it’s untrue. pink venom is an authentically blackpink song. from the production to the lyrics to the formula it’s THEIR song. the reason the “other group” excuse doesn’t work here is because no other group WOULD release this song. blackpink is the only group that could possibly pull this song off, and, at least in my opinion, they didn’t. so who else could? at the end of the day no matter what your reasons are for disliking pink venom, whether you have a narrative completed list or can’t gather your thoughts to explain it, kpop fans NEED TO LEARN to accept criticism. no, not everyone is going to like your group’s recent comeback. no, it’s not always hate, targeting, or favouritism. and no, no one owes it to you to be quiet about their opinions. why are yours more important? because they’re positive? constructive criticism is positive too. we all just need to learn to hear each other more. that applies to both sides. but silencing one side of opinions doesn’t benefit anyone.

I agree, so much. I've gotten people say to me under KZbin comments to just leave if I don't like the song. But I like blackpink, and I like their songs. I'm watching them because I like them. Whenever I come up criticism, most of the comments are just plain ignorance like, go write a song yourself then, can you dance like them? As if I will do that for some random stranger on the KZbin. Their entitlement to think that only praises should be showered on their group is insane. Another example is twice, I love them, they're my ultimate group but I do agree that in their albums they have many filler songs. Bts has three very similar and western targeted singles. Blackpink uses the same formula and rarely tries anything new. But whenever I express such opinions I'm bombarded with many nonsensical comments. The most problematic seems blinks, because blackpink rarely gets a comeback they get hypersensitive about anything and everything. Another comment which makes no sense is who asked you. Like excuse me, this is the internet, you put out your opinion for everyone to see, I'm allowed to comment on it. Then there is the comment of you just interact with toxic communities in blink hence you're also toxic. Like why would go to a toxic comment section willinging lol. I just got hate comments for expressing my opinions, the same as I'm getting now. And so many more kpop comments which are simply ridiculous and don't make sense.

My immediate knee jerk reaction to this entire release as a whole (teasers, music video, song itself, styling, general aesthetic) is that blackpink (and yg in general) can afford to be WAYYYYYYY more weird and conceptually literal. i saw the phrase "pink venom" on instagram and immediately thought of so many cool ideas to draw from, evil scientists in laboratories making toxins, snakes and other venomous animals, dying a tragically fashionable death from a snakebite, etc. There was such a cool direction they couldve gone with this, and aside from the gas masks, they didnt. im not surprised, just disapointed. i think the last time any of yg's creative works as a whole have been conceptually interesting was 2ne1's crush album era. i want to see blackpink tackle a song with a much more clear narritive purpose, like come back home. i honestly dont have a problem with them railing about how badass they are 24/7, thats what i go to blackpink for, but i wanna see them be badasses for a good reason.

I didn't really like Pink Venom but I didn't really expected to do so no hard feelings. I'm fine with disliking their prereleases as long as I can enjoy the title track of their albums. Music aside I found the MV to be borderline unwatchable. The editing was so hectic and together with the flashing it actually made me nauseous. What a shame because their massive budgets go to waste when you can't even appreciate the sets and outfits. If I had the patience I would count every cut in the video and compare it with other kpop releases just for fun. Someone should get fired

Star Wars reviewer: I'm sad to say that we do indeed get told all the time to focus on what we love and shut up if we didn't like something. -__- There's a general pushback against critique in recent years, which is sad because critique is a very valid artform on its own, and has a great place in fandom! If we like pieces of art, we're going to want to explore what makes them work, what doesn't, and especially if we like parts of one thing and not other aspects, we want to explore why! Keep doing what you're doing; your critiques are always well-articulated and thought-provoking!
@cWjkL8ysxOkrH662 жыл бұрын
do you think this sudden anti-critic mindset we have now is the result of the MCU's success? any correlation?
@k531072 жыл бұрын
@@cWjkL8ysxOkrH66 There's a correlation for sure, but correlation isn't inherently causation. Honestly there are a looot of factors influencing it, of which the capitalistic commercialization of art is really only one potential factor. I do think this plays a role in setting certain expectations for mass consumption=above criticism, but I'm more inclined to look at the rise of the internet and publicly available information (which is not a bad thing!) making critique more accessible for artists and fans, and global factors making parasocial relationships (which again aren't actually bad inherently; almost every art fan ever will see a reflection of their own interests/desires in art, which makes it a part of their identity) a good escape from the hellhole that is earth right now. Plus, going back to people making art their identity, I do think there's the factor of people being unable to step back and realize that a critique of something they love isn't inherently a moral condemnation of them as a person. There are also issues leading to the rise of virtue signaling and an overreliance on perceived social morality (which in previous generations was perceived religious devotion). So basically, there are a million factors at play here, and some sociologist will have fun writing about it in about a hundred years. 😆

As far as video essays are concerned: there is a field of study called art criticism. Many video essays fall under that category. Not liking art or other people's reaction to that art is fine, but not knowing why is a sign of ignorance or mis-education. I like the 500+ word video essay. It helps me form my own opinions into more concrete ideas. I may not agree wholeheartedly with the points in the essay, but I can at least feel like I'm arguing from some foundation. CJ the X did a great video about this. One of his points is that you criticize the art that you love because you want to see the artist do so much better. If I were a music writer, producer, or cinematographer, I would love intelligent criticism. I want people to not blindly consume art. Then again, I recognize that some folks will have a visceral reaction to some art, and not necessarily a well-articulated intellectual reaction. Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of BlackPink. I just dropped by to say that these video essays are a treasure trove of insights into the M/V's, discographies, and careers of the groups you cover. I loved Dodging Disbandment. Please stay safe and warm.

Bravo!!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥 It’s one of the many reasons why we seems to be unable to have nuanced discussions on the internet. Re On the Ground - your video was the one that made me actually like the song! Without that video, I would still be here disliking it so people commenting so negatively on it are hilarious in the way that I (and perhaps others) would not have gone back to give the song a second/third/fourth chance

The fact that you write full essays about K-pop and treat it as an art form worth analysing is exactly why I love your channel! The way that you discuss different songs and groups so in depth often inspires me to check out more groups and form my own opinion, so thank you! Also, it's wild to me that people will write you off as a BlackPink hater when... you've made positive videos about BlackPink before? Looking at something as a whole unit and commenting on both the positives and negatives doesn't make you any less of a fan - I'd argue it makes you more of a fan because you have the overwhelming passion to analyse songs and the desire to see groups improve over time!

i don't usually leave comments but it's important the you know that for every person that sends hate comments, there are hundreds and thousands of people who appreciate and love your work that looks beyond the shell and diggs deep unappologaticaly. there's always going to be someone out there that'll disagree with you, so keep doing what you do knowing that your work is thought provoking and not fishing for views. as far as the song goes, as a pre-release it works well at exciting us fans for the album (though lyrically there's nothing interesting in my opinion). and i really hope that the title track is going to be something different that we haven't heard from them yet. stay strong and keep up the genuine work. much love from Israel!

It's funny that you mentioned the Pink Venom video "not flashing its highlights in your eyes". I get photophobia as a side effect of chronic migraine [bright or flashing lights make me sick] and it's gotten really difficult to watch kpop videos in the last two years as this condition ramped up. Don't even get me started on live stages. Anyway, something I found jarring about the editing in this video is that sometimes there'd be so many quick cuts in rapid succession, I'd actually start to feel it just from that alone. I don't think I've ever experienced that before. Even without a photosensitive condition, that is some whack-ass editing.

As someone who watches a lot of video essays, kpop fans interactions with criticism will always confuse me. No other community would tell you to not talk about something you didn't like. Other communities have people making hour long videos breaking down how they would rewrite a movie. And when you look at commentary KZbin you see hours and hours of content that criticizes other influencers actions. Fandom allows people to live in an echo chamber, never indulging in opinions other than their own. "Let people enjoy things" is just as important as "Let people hate things". Of course you shouldn't be little others for liking or not liking something. But personally my favorite part of music is it's ability to carry emotion to the listener. I love seeing people get passionate about media, positive or not.

With over 98K subscribers you are very clearly doing something right, Mera. The thing I appreciate the most about your videos is the fact that you don't only gush about a group and say "omg I love them so much! Kings! Queens! Slay!" You tell us why they slayed and why they could have done more. I've started noticing that many of the fans who complain that Kpop/fandom is toxic contribute to the toxicity. Fans need to quit policing "how to be fans" and just let each other enjoy the music. Or not enjoy the music. Someone disliking or criticizing something you like literally has no reflection on you. That's not too hard to understand 🤦🏾♀️

If people can't talk about popular releases, and their criticism for those releases, why even post it publicly in the first place? It just doesn't make sense. Plus, you always discuss what you like and didn't like about a release. So, the problem is??? I don't get it. Keep doing what you do. I absolutely love you. So many kpop fans want to have it both ways. They want their faves to be seen as incredible risk takers artists who do what’s never been done before!!!!…. But also ignore that creatives who do make waves always ALWAYS make some people mad and/or inspire ambivalence and debate. Like, oh my god, the Beatles are held up as the pinnacle of pop and I can’t can’t how many times they caused a moral panic! Popular culture is designed to get people talking and passionate. If you can’t handle your faves being discussed as artists - with all the critique that can come with it - then you really don’t have confidence in them. ETA: also just gotta add that your video on the framing styles for each member made me realize I’m basically a Blink (whereas seeing people repeating omg slayyyy over and over never did)
@ceastar2 жыл бұрын
It makes me happy that you have the strength to post these kinds of videos. It feels like I’m listening to someone who actually has passion for what kpop can be. Blackpink is just “Baby’s First Kpop”, which is why it has such a brutal fandom for the limited amount of effort YG has actually put into them. You take the time to explain that, but you also give it a boost by describing the good things about each of the girls 😊
@everglowup2 жыл бұрын
Girl I WANTED to hear what you had to say, I actually couldn't wait lol But on a more serious note, the truth is people can only handle criticism and critique when it's not their faves. They will find anything to discredit any good and proper analysis whatsoever to soothe their ego. They don't have to confidence to just say "hey I like this song coz I find it good" they need other people to validate their enjoyment of the song as well. Their confidence rests in group think, so when someone has an opinion that differs the response is always to bully people out of wanting to express their feelings. Omg something I forgot to mention in my review, The lack of Rosé and Jisoo kind of bothered me ngl. "You better make I like a banana and split" girl is 5am I almost fell off my bed. Lisa in the chorus> Jennie for sure.

I think for me personally the problem i have with Blackpink stems from the infrequency of their comebacks. In the interim between BP comebacks I end up listening to so much fantastic music coming from other groups in the kpop scene, that when a BP song isn't great it becomes that much more underwhelming. It's like my brain says "I waited 2 years for that?" Since BP's last comeback I've gotten three or four excellent Dreamcatcher albums, four Korean albums alone from Twice, PIXY debuted and blew me away with three fantastic mini albums, Purple Kiss slayed multiple comebacks, Idle released multiple very solid albums, and Red Velvet came back from hiatus to produce Queendom and Feel My Rhythm(possibly my favorite of their albums to date). Through all of this, these other groups have evolved, developed, and refined their sounds into something unique and special, into music that grabs me by the soul and won't let go. Blackpink's sound has barely moved since D4(with the exception of Lovesick Girls). It feels like while the rest of the industry progresses and pushes forward, Blackpink is still locked in a bygone age. I find this disappointing, after all Blackpink got me into Kpop, but they just have been overshadowed by a bunch of other extremely talented groups working their butts off to produce great music.

I can feel it... I got into k-pop because of BP and When I started seeing new artists like twice, red velvet, G-Idle and Mamamoo I was just really overwhelmed by their amazing music they don't have the same concept all along I mean I get it if they like making girl crush and there are people out there who still like girl crush but the kind of song they produce shouldn't take a year...It feels weird to hear a song and just go like..."Uhm, Did I hear it somewhere else?" And then you realise "Oh, it's the same formula...Jennie opening, then Lisa and rose and jisoo's pre chorus and then a chorus section with two or three minimal words and then Lisa and Jennie coming again with a pretty sassy kind of lyrics rap and at the end a bridge and the YG party chorus with a word chanting" It just feels so annoying....It's like someone took 12 hours in a kitchen and you have expectations you will get s whole meal but all you get is boiled rice Anyways...let's up too the album even If I don't prefer BP's music that Much there's a thing I can't deny....Their B-sides do slap

I remember watching your video about the BP formula and the jist was "I LIKE them, but I feel like this tired formula is a waste of fans' time and money and an insult to the girls" and I had to agree. Some groups people genuinely do not like but even mild HEALTHY criticism of groups they do like is met with vitriol from rabid stans and it's...spineless?? Cringe? A sign of people further absorbing the media they enjoy as aspects of their personality? Very odd "logged on" behavior.

I really dislike how some people reacted to the critiques of this song and many other songs. People should be allowed to say that they don't like a something, especially when they have a good explanation for it. I personally am not a fan of BLACKPINK/blink, nor do I like how majoraty of their songs are basically decame firmula over and over again, nor do I go out of my way to listen to their discography on a regular as their songs are just not my cup of tea. I personally enjoy songs that have a bit more thought put into them and that have more interesting melodies. Now I don't dislike the melody or the instrumentation of this song I just think there are better songs out there and that I could be listening to much better music, and I do. I did enjoy On the ground though, the song is very emotional and honest, I really liked the theme of it and it reminded me a bit of some of the oldschool songs that I love to listen to.

I think the problem with KZbinrs is no the "essays" (cuz you do it so respectfully that even when I disagree with you, I can still appreciate your thoughts) to me the problem is the lack of respect that we have reached. Especially with girl groups, they have no filter, almost like they've believe that the more aggressive the better. You're allowed to like/dislike that has never stopped anyone from doing it, but c'mon slutshaming or being cruel for views? that has to stop. We can't keep letting that behaviour continue in the name of "opinion" at least that's what I think

Exactly. As someone who loves watching critical reviews and is open to hearing other people's opinions about groups I love, the general reaction to this comeback felt SO different than with other groups. People couldn't just dislike the song, they had to say that BlackPink are untalented, don't deserve to have the success they have, slept their way to top, aren't "real" artists, and every other insult under the sun. Been waiting on your opinion on this and 100% agree. LE SSERAFIM, NewJeans, IVE, STAYC, among others, have all released songs that found a way to be both catchy and surprisingly soft. Not in a ballady way, and that's really what gets me. I don't have your vocabulary for these things, but it's been very impressive to see how many GGs have taken this posture of quiet, creamy, almost whispering confidence. It's not meekness, it's more like feeling less pressured to associate impact with loudness. So for Blackpink to do it is significant. To me it feels like an evolution in the way femininity is expressed in Kpop. I haven't seen anyone talk about it so maybe I'm imagining it, but seeing Rocket Punch (a group I like but that is produced in a way that the biggest quality you can acknowledge is that their team efficiently spots trends and adapts to them) this week kinda sealed the deal for me and I'll die on that hill.

I really love how you describe things like outfits, scenery etc. in your videos cause it helps my friend who is legally blind! She says you explain it so she can imagine the details better:)
