This is the best series on youtube, hands down. Thanks for all the great work and for the inspiring guests. Man, the art and lighting budgets on these films must be huge.
@toddbanhazl5 жыл бұрын
the budgets are bigger yes but the philosophies and approaches are exactly the same if you have small single lightbulb work lamp or a huge light on a crane. placement, direction, color, quality, emotion, shaping a face, and story reasoning don't change.

As a “filmmaker” myself, this is very helpful. Cinematography is so important, making the actor stand out in a dark background is difficult. We encountered this problem on our newest short. This gives me new ideas for our next dark shoot. Thank you sharing !!!

I love this! I feel like some of my lighting choices are kind of arbitrary, so it's always helpful to see someone explain their thought process behind lighting a specific scene. I've already been reflecting on how I could have lit some scenes differently, and videos like this are definitely going to play a role in how I approach scenes going forward. Thanks so much for this!

On the whip pan, at 6:32, that was used to disguise a cut? I'm only asking because I have heard editors state that great cinematographers born in the editing room, and this seems like an example of what they are talking about. Edit: Also thank you again for getting some great people on to take about their craft.
@toddbanhazl5 жыл бұрын
we used the whip pans to hide the cut yes, so the editor could choose the best performance take but keep the feeling of a live whip pan. maximum flexibility in the footage while maintaining strong creative choices.

FANTASTIC BREAKDOWN, THANKS!! Q: 3:50 The main light (on the crane) is "2 or 3 blocks away" - huh?
@toddbanhazl4 жыл бұрын
hi! the main light was on a crane and we parked the base of the crane down the street and maybe 2 blocks away from the rooftop we were shooting on. Then the crane arm extended high in the air above the buildings (imagine a construction crane working on a sky scraper), and we aimed the light. We did this so the light would be out of the shot background, but it has to be bright enough to reach our roof top. hope that helps

if we had been low budget i would have put the backlight on the roof and used something smaller and affordable. the fogger isnt crazy expensive to rent and the front LED fill is very affordable :) the roof was wet down but there was a hose on the roof already!! theres always a way

if you speak about the lenses in mm is this for 35mm or super35 equivalent?
@robertnees97815 жыл бұрын
Full 35MM equivalent for those PV lens, the Panavision DXL 2 is a large format (8k) 46mm sensor (it is the RED’s Monstro sensor).
@toddbanhazl5 жыл бұрын
we shot 6k,7k,and 8k on the dxl2 sensor so they are kinda wider in my wide. like a 35mm felt like a 25mm and a 50 felt like a 35m. (in super 35 field of view terms)
@rohitvyavahare57275 жыл бұрын
U should ask questions about Colour temperature
@toddbanhazl5 жыл бұрын
on the roof we selected the camera color temp based on how the buildings in the background looked, we scouted early and took photos. the movie lights followed that decision.

Can someone explain what a master is regarding shooting a scene?
@NatesFilmTutorials5 жыл бұрын
LaHamada the main/wide shot
@toddbanhazl5 жыл бұрын
a master is typically the first and fundamental shot of a scene. like a big wide or a moving oner etc. whatever the main shot will be, and then from the there the rest of the shots help build the scene for the edit. the master is typically a wide shot because its good for the actors and crew to get used to the scene. once you've nailed the master shot, you can go in for coverage, meds, closeups, inserts, reverses, special moments, etc.

I would like to know why the DP and the director chose to use spherical and to crop over shooting anamorphic.
@toddbanhazl5 жыл бұрын
we thought anamoprhic would feel too much like a music video in a world that is as poppy and extravagant and full of excess as this. we didn't want to lose the human element. we wanted to ground the images in something more human and gritty so we chose spherical lenses but in large format which still have that big epic feeling that you can get from anamorphic. hope that helps

Todd Banhazl call me crazy (I only saw the movie once when it first came out), but I feel like I remember being innately humored by the Usher scene because I think you actually did go Anamorphic because that was such like a fantastical wild unexpected moment in the story of the characters. And congrats on this movie. I watched it and I thought it was one of the best films of the year. I know a lot of other people felt that way too. When you said lightning in a bottle, I completely agreed with you. This was a fantastic project, you did a fantastic job, and every part of it is really awesome
@toddbanhazl5 жыл бұрын
@@Thats_my_Point thanks buddy. yes the usher scene is anamorphic because we wanted that one scene to look like an actual music video. it's the height of excess before it crashes down. so fun to shoot.
