I love the old EMD E and F locomotives. To me they are the most beautiful locomotives ever built and it’s unfortunate that there will never be streamlined locomotives like this in the future.

I rode the pre-Amtrak “Panama Limited”, which passed through Canton and Grenada, several times. I am happy to see that the line is still in service. South of Memphis, the maximum speed was 79 mph. I am sad to see that the ABS signals have been deactivated. I always hoped that Amtrak would run a second train from Memphis to New Orleans, that would use this route. It would be a daylight, regional run, down in the morning, back in the afternoon. It won’t happen with deteriorating track and dark territory. In 1970, the Panama flew through this area.

Back in the mid 50's, I lived a stone's throw from the IC. I would watch her as she was pulling into the station, and was she beautiful. Three gleaming EMD diesels and around fifteen shiny coaches with the porters wearing their white uniforms standing in the Dutch doors. Oh! Those good old days.😊

Horseshoe Railfan Iowa Pacific stores many of its passenger cars and locomotives (like the EMD E9) at their Bensenville, IL facilities (Chicago Terminal) directly west of O’Hare Airport. That’s about 5 miles directly north of where I live, so it is not unusual to see activity there ... onto the Canadian Pacific line (old Milwaukee RR). www.iowapacific.com/railroads/chicago-terminal-railway/

Back in the 50's, the Illinois Central was double tracked, and from Jackson to Memphis the City of New Orleans with these E8's would commonly exceed 115 miles per hour, which was fast for it's time, and no Government Regulations, regarding it's speed.

Good video but this version of the "City of New Orleans" sucks. The singers are not good and they changed the lyric to make it politically correct. Is it really bad to refer to "old black men" as such? Thumbs down on this one.
@DelayInBlockProductions6 жыл бұрын
This version isn’t for everybody. But what makes this version appropriate is that the lead singer was the president of the former Grenada Railroad - and owns the trainset in this video.
@williamjones44836 жыл бұрын
Ok. Thank you for your reply. I do enjoy your videos.
@MrRailroadrunner6 жыл бұрын
"old black men" is the original lyrics from the song. It was a different era when this was written. While that may offend people today, it's unchanged from when the song was written.
@williamjones44836 жыл бұрын
Actually, it was changed in this version. What I heard in the lyric was "old grey men". I did a quick search and found that the lyric had not otherwise been changed except in this version. Other versions are sung as "old black men". I made my comment based on the fact that as far as i know it is still alright to refer to a person of color as being "black". Maybe the person singing this had another reason for changing the lyrics and the melody.
@MrRailroadrunner6 жыл бұрын
I read this backwards this morning. I tend to agree the original lyric is better, but I really like this rendition of the song for some reason.
