Mysterious “Banksy style” graffiti artist, whose art is of prophetic visions. Good and bad events, both major and minor, could be foreshadowed. The art changes to depict the results, after the events have come to pass. For a district, how about a tech district. Companies could be run by disguised aliens and/or people from the future. Disputes between companies could be settled in an underground arena, with giant robot battles. 😁

The theater district... ran by The Phantom of the Opera from behind the scenes who uses a fat lady in a Viking helmet who kills people with her singing, as the face of his organization. There’s an abandoned theater they operate from, a new theater where you can see regular movies on screens 1-12, but screen 13 is usually off limits because they’ve found a way to activate people and whatever movie is playing at the time will determine what powers you get based on the characters in the movie... there is a Broadway type place here with stage plays performed by bards, and writers and performers are treated as gods (I’d look into patron saints and actual gods of things like acting, performance, etc..) William Shakespeare is now an immortal being who can make things happen just by writing them with his magic pen. The Brothers Grim also reside here. There could a mask wearing hedonistic secret society here. A walk of fame that could possibly summon the person who’s square you are standing on at the time... there could be a comedy club where the joker performs... paparazzi that can steal souls with their cameras (maybe to feed Shakespeare? To keep him immortal?) The possibilities are endless lol

What might a city zoo be like in this setting? Jeez. Imagine the strange and rare animals they might have. Secretly there could be an area that just looks like an off-limits staff building to the general public... but if you use the right runes or other magic to access The true nature of the facility, it’s really filled with The Legion from Fallout: New Vegas (a faction that’s basically a dystopian twist on the Roman Legion), who use some of the more interesting and dangerous zoo animals in a secret gladiatorial colosseum. Instead of Gladiators these are members of the elite factor known as “The Zoo-Keepers,” with a Keven James stand in who has Dr Doolittle’s powers and rigs a lot of the fights because only he can communicate with all of the animals (even the most alien and strange species Druidic type characters cannot). But there is a secret society within this... well... secret society lol. A secret faction within a secret faction... who call themselves the Zoologists... these guys hang out by the reptile section of the oldest least trafficked part of the zoo, because they’ve been breading baby Cthulhu type monsters that will bring about the coming of the Old Ones. Alright... idk if I want to run this game, or write an urban fantasy series now... lol. Someone use this for one, and I’ll use the idea for the other.

I don't know if it is a thing, but watching these videos has given me an idea for a character based on Ratatoskr of norse myth for when I'll run this. This character runs a huge chain of small cafés throughout the city, operating each simultaniously. Since people never really care about who gives them their coffee or tea, no one notices that all attendants in each café looks exactly the same. The character hears and remembers every conversation that happens in their cafés, making them an extremely good source of rumours and information, for a price. Each café also has a tree as the centre piece of its interior and for a fee a customer can sit at a table next to it and be send to any of the other cafés unnoticed, giving the other characters an option for a sort of fast travel as the Ratatoskr allows them to climb the world tree. No one notices if a previously empty table suddenly has some customers on it, they must have just walked in while you weren't looking.

Celebration Heights. What was once a vast swath of unused city lots and a smaller, gentler neighborhood was dressed up to celebrate some major anniversary for the city with all kinds of lofty and patriotic decor. The unused lots were rededicated to affordable housing and apartment complexes and to top it off, major utility services by the outskirts to provide power. But that celebration came and went and the last of the lots and land were sold and bought up by landlords and developers, bringing an end to the high value times, stranding anyone who bought property with a investment that will never pay off. This is a collection of townhouses, apartment complexes, and subsidized housing built for the lucky few who's sad story or connections get them out of the slums. The Streets are bright looking for the most part but don't let that fool you, when workers were fist laying the foundations for the roads a sidewalk networks, the constant squabbling and demands of investors and Homeowner Associations led to the streets and backward to become as twisted as the machinations of the politicians who first planned the Heights. The streets and parks are the exact twisted, uncanny places with their false patriotic optimism where the twisted and uncanny cryptids and creatures of modern folklore and urban legend stalk amongst the shadows. The insurance offices and law firms are where the cunning and the dealmaking folk spin a thousand webs to drag people in if for no other reason then just so they don't rot alone. Old high schools and community centers are where secret societies, nuisance hooligans, and common criminals lurk and plot. The Utility services still run, but only by the constant backbreaking work of the workers trying to live a decent life and the devotion and miracles brought by the constant and various sacrifices that go on within the plants.

These videos have really been interesting to watch and have made me start giving the books a read. The only issue for me, at least, comes from the gameplay side of things. I love the concept of literally being able to basically play any character from a story and have it make sense in context, but I really wish this game had just slightly more fleshed out combat. I know that isn’t the point of the game, but just having a little more “concrete” rules when it comes to encounters instead of the “free flow” would help get me over the edge and try to present this to my group.
@hamzaimran7714 жыл бұрын
1) this isn't supposed to be played like dnd; when the players mess up their rolls or you just feel like narratively it would fit i.e you penalize them by either giving them narrative problems or mechanical problems. i'd recommend watching people play CoM to get the feel of it. cityofmist.co/blogs/actual-play-shows here you can find links to people playing city of mist on KZbin and the like (I'd recommend rolling in the mist but you can watch whatever you want). 2) in the mc toolkit book there are rules on "Dangers" which are basically customized encounters that have their own rules, moves and such; basically it's the more concrete rules you are looking for but the book only recommends these rules for bosses or special characters but you can use it for whatever purposes you want.

Giant building you can't find the entrance to? The Oldest House maybe? Federal Bureau of Control would be an interesting group for the setting. Could also do something with the cargo cults of Melanesia, fairly obscure and under-appreciated mythos. Groups of drifters on the fringes of the city or hiding in the abandoned buildings of the Industrial district praying and making sacrifices to effigies in the shape of UPS trucks or Amazon drones fully believing they will deliver them what they need to live. For another district maybe something along the lines of a massive dump/landfill/wrecking yard home to ancient gods of pestilence and disease working as garbage men and second-hand scavengers. Groups of broken and discarded toys animated by the betrayal of those they thought loved them who threw them away. A boneyard for the forgotten gods and monsters that are ready to fade from history if only it will let them. A tiny office hidden among the hills of refuse and decay with a tarnished sign declaring "Lost & Found" to any who manage to reach it, both a promise and a warning.

The way you described the districts give me so many ideas, like grouping them mythos theme. Downtown = Wonderland. All the bright wonders and all the hidden dangers bunched together in a kaleidoscope of contradictions. Many of the clubs and shops serve as fronts, or at least pay protection to, the mob boss: the Queen of Hearts and her consigliere White Rabbit. The Blue collar district = the Enchanted Woods. Between the castles of the princes and princesses lay the mythos of the common folks. Red Riding Hood visiting her Grandma. The woodsman heading off to work. Hansel and Gretel poking where they shouldn't. Also home to any number of Big Bad Wolves ready to snap up those that stray from the path. The Old Quarter = home to classic myths. This is home to Rifts who bear the legacy of Hercules, Horus, and Anansi.

I had a cool character concept of a French young man who, in his parents attic, found an aviator cap with a large hole in the side of it. Putting it on, he discovered this hat had the spirit of the Red Baron inside. His abilities are accesed by simply sliding on the cap and putting on the goggles, giving him a spectral battlecoat and a P08 instead of his current attire and equipment, leadership abilities and a spectral, semi-sentient blood-red triplane that can either strafe and attack foes on its own from above, or be flown in pretty sick dogfights. Anyone else old enough to remember the episode of Seinfeld Where they can’t find where they parked the car in that parking Garage? George gets in trouble for public urination I think.. anyway What if that was a city lol. Just a giant maze-like parking garage With a Minotaur at the center, and wrecked cars stacked on certain levels that make it like the hedge maze level of Zombies ate my neighbors? And Magneto is somewhere in there too ready to toss cars and metal guard rails at you.

"A skyscraper that rises above all others but is impossible to find the entry to" That's literally just the building in Control.

I always said I wouldn’t play anything other than 5e. “I don’t have the time.” But dude I might have to make time to learn this one.
