This elegant wine glass contains a secret mechanism that is supposedly at least 2,500 years old. A simple piece of physics, although maybe slightly deeper in philosophical terms.
The glass looks normal, except that there is a slender central column inside the glass. If you pour wine into the glass, you can drink it in the normal way. However you have to be careful when filling the glass. If you fill the glass beyond a certain level, the glass will empty - every drop will drain out from a hole in the bottom, and you won't get a drink at all.
The idea is attributed to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras, who lived on the Island of Samos 2,500 years ago. As he wrote nothing himself, we only know about Pythagoras from the writings of other people, especially Plato. However as well as his fame as a mathematician, he is also celebrated for his philosophy and his way of life. The Civilised Glass illustrates a point that we should not ask for more than our share in life.

The glass requires liquid to be touching the bottom to hold a vaccume in order to siphon the liquid out. If you were to start chugging I expect the seal would break and it would stop leaking.

This is a modern version of Pythagoras Cup also known as the Tantalus Cup. It was somewhat of a practical joke in its day, if during a feast a guest became over zealous and took a large serving of wine it would do exactly what you see in the video. The originals were made of clay making even more interesting as you may not notice the tube in the middle once it had wine in it.

I think it has something to do with the vacuum created when the wine goes over the top. It’s like siphoning gas from a tank- you don’t have to apply suction to the tube the whole time (or you’d die from drinking fuel), once you “tap the keg” it creates suction

I think that the pillar in the middle is like an upside down test tube (fixed there, only capable of vertical movement) with a hole under it. If it is completely underwater (or wine), the buoyancy lifts it up, and the liquid starts to flow under it and into the hole. The constantly pouring wine will stop it from closing until all of it is gone. If it works like that, you can just press the glass pillar in the middle and it will stop it from pouring out.

Instead of sucking on the hose or putting your finger over it and getting the rhythm right, this one fills the hose as you add wine, with a shaft to the bottom next to it. When it fills maximally, the wine heads down, and a siphon is started, where the wine falling creates suction behind it.
