What a soaring guitar riff by the great Mick Jones. Mick’s ability to arrange songs is second to none.

Sounds as relevant in 2022 as it did in 1980. The clash the only band that mattered to an awful lot of people

That song leaps out at you! It's utterly fabulous, the tune, the words, the musicianship, with Mick and Joe singing together! Unbeatable! the subject matter is more relatable today than in1980,

"Allianza dollars are spent to raise the towering buildings...." Only the Clash would know this very obscure lyric from a song by a long forgotten American lyrical genius. Phil Ochs. It has been said.

I remember buying it when it came out, when my brother and I stopped at a ShopRite with our mom late at night on our way home from working at Six Flags Great Adventure. It was a triple album sold for the price of a single album. I think we stayed up all night listening to it!

In a strong field, this is my favorite Clash song. The message resonates strongly, and I got an extra chill last month, visiting London and seeing the ghost of Grenfell tower block.

As anyone who bought the album back in 1980/81 would remember, it was a lot of information to absorb (George Harrison made a similar comment when the Beatles 'white album' was released in 1968) and for me personally it took the best part of 9 or 10 months to absorb it all, but what an album, not perfect (like the 'white album') but a classic all the same and this song is one of the classic Clash tracks on the album.
@danschreffler12804 жыл бұрын
Both the White Album and London Calling were concise enough to listen to in one sitting. Like the movies The Deer Hunter or Scarface, you really had to block off a chunk of time to listen to this album in it's entirety. This album was such a music lesson for a young kid from Indiana. God Bless The Clash.

@@danschreffler1280 The brilliant thing about Sandinista to me (in addition to all the fantastic songs) is how they structured it. Every side of each record works as a standalone piece, they all work well with their other side, and the whole thing works together. It's like they managed to make 6 EPs, 3 regular LPs, and one triple LP. The CD rerelease even adds another element to that where it works as two longer LPs. It's a masterpiece of sequencing and of music. It took me like a solid year or so, but now it and London Calling are tied for my favorite album.

I'm really surprised this has never been adopted as an anthem for the Grenfell disaster. It was written in the shadow of the Westway all them years ago. And speaks of the way big government treats us, giving us little highrise rabbit hutches to be grateful for. And doesn't give a toss about us.

My sister and her two children were beaten up on a regular basis by her Egyptian muslim husband in one of these nightmarish towers. That was of course until my father and elder brother went to discuss his future with him and strangely he was never heard from again.

I'm lucky, I was born and bred by parents who cared. Not an easy upbringing on a council estate in the West Midlands. But I had parents, with standards, a work ethic and the possibility of a job in an industry, a chance to better myself. Where is that nowadays for the youth? And the working classes? Abandoned, distrusted, belittled, by Labour and Conservatives. No Future.
