Interview with Joe Cooper: • Safety At Sea For You ...
This week we look at Cole Brauer's Class 40 Racing Sailboat used to sail her, the youngest and first American woman to complete the Global Solo Challenge Race. What can we learn about safety and seaworthiness from Cole's offshore sailboat?

Cole rocks! Have you heard of Kirsten Neuschäfer? Also very inspiring: Solo, non-stop, circumnavigation using 1968-era technology, first place winner.

Completely agree not enough has been said about that man and the fact that my understanding is he basically opened up a can of whoop ass on everybody with a 46 foot or 47 foot cruiser? Let's see a video on him and his boat!

@@blackhawkteam8625 He probably feels like he came in second, but he is also probably just a humble sailor doing his thing and most likely could care less.

The boat is one thing but Cole seemed to be very resilient psycholgicaly and even more than that she was able to appear normal despite the constant sailing challenges. Perhaps her sleep regime allowed her to recover more thoroughly than the 10 minute nap gang. She was also able connect to viewers with well chosen clips of the scenery.

As usual great video! She is awesome and inspiring! Perhaps another video highlighting Kirsten Neuschafer who WON the golden globe race which took her 235 days using old technology ,celestial navigation and don't think she had "netflix". Golden Globe hasn't gotten the press it deserves!

I like the departure into featuring this boat / topic. Will you consider speaking on Jerome Rand's Westsail, Bill Hatfield's Northshore, or John Kretschmer's Contessa? All, very accessible boats for KZbin's day dreamers. **Of course I vote for Bill's Northshore since he circumnavigated west, the hard way. lol

The thought of being offshore, solo, and sleeping just plain freaks me out. Today, while out in the middle of nowhere in the North Atlantic Ocean I narrowly miss a giant wooden cable reel floating just above the surface. Had I been sleeping - it quite possibly could have done significant damage. The people who do this kind of racing are truly a unique breed.

Mike Plant was a solo racer family friend. He was always amazed that nobody had a clue to he was in America but when he rolled into France thousands showed up to greet him. Side bare see the KZbin rebuild of Duracell. Also Coyote is a fascinating watch. I spent hours talking to Mike about getting Airco Distributer his first solo boat to enter the Chicago race basically to promote the next boat. No inboard engine was the stumbling block.

Had to hit PAUSE to say I'm new to your channel, so I've been binging. But this one gave me goosebumps not 5 minutes in! I'm a horse trainer primarily. My big sailing experience WAS pretty big, though--big enough that when our charter finally limped into Tinos after 21 hours in Force 9 on what should have been a 7 hour Sunday stroll from Kaia (Greece, the Aegean), Port Police arrested our captain. Not sure if the fact that his father was the head (dunno the right words) of said port police had anything to do with it. We were on a lumbering 80 ft wooden motor "sailer" 2 masts, but so heavy and poorly crewed they ripped the jib top to bottom and were so underpowered steering was a pipe dream. 20-30 foot swell is scary, but imagine this coming from all directions and having no real way to keep the bow headed roughly upswell. And the noise when we took one too straight on: That heavy wooden bow hit the trough so hard it was louder than a rock concert, and more jarring than falling out a second floor window. I do ramble on. Was just trying to say I'm really enjoying your channel. But I guess wannabe sailors might be like fishermen describing "the one that got away."

I actually sailed on one for 5 days on our way from Puerto Rico to Bermuda! The boat itself is amazing and fast but god are they uncomfortable!!! They are very safe boats that can handle a lot and keep on chugging but you feel every single wave and movement!! Plus due to the long keel and the flat bottom, they tend to rotate around the keel when a wave hits them broadside, I mean it’s minimal but noticeable!! You hear everything in that boat, every tiny wave, sheets moving, running rigging, etc….. I can not phantom 130 in that boat, alone, in a race, hauling ass!!! By the way, the exact same thing happen to me o that boat, I went flying from one end to another but I faired a lot better than she did, which makes her even more amazing!!! 🫶🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

I looked on Yachtworld and the cheapest Class 40 was £98500 (~$123,600). So my take is: only own a class 40 to sail in races. They're fast and finicky and all you'll want to do is get to the finish line so you can get off the boat because its so uncomfortable while you're on it. Also solo non-stop circumnavigation is definitely for the young, and I'm too old to attempt it (well it would have to be a solid boat from Norway or Sweden with a long keel before I'd even consider it)

Hey Tim enjoyed the upload. Just wanted to point out the boat wasn’t built by composite creations, instead Martin boulter was running a ponzi scheme. My order was last one in so my 50£k deposit was spent on this boat instead. The owner had the boat removed from creations and was finished off externally with an additional £200k. Boulter got off Scott free and ocd we’re useless, I grew up in Dartmouth. Glad the boat was finally used for something interesting. If you are reading this Tim is there a way to PM?
