Had a consult with Tim this past week. I’ve been doing research for quite a while and felt pretty confident going into the conversation, but was still able to come away from the consult having learned a bunch and now have a better idea of what I’m looking for. I highly recommend anyone considering a purchase to consult with Tim because his knowledge of every different boat is thorough and practical for someone like me who hasn’t quite experienced the reality of cruising-size boat ownership. Thanks again Tim and looking forward to learning more.

I have a Beneteau Oceanis 350 1989 , French Built Wing Keel Cast Iron changed the Bolts 10 years ago old Bolts were fine just preventative, owners version very fast high pointing turned my boys into men , only draws 4 feet, can shift the fresh water, as ballast in two 50 gallon tanks , port and Starboard, setup for cruising with one fridge, two freezers, ICW friendly, and very Comfortable. Big Head, two large Private cabins, fire and aft. My Volvo m2003 28hp motor has a manual crank which I had to use once when the batteries were dead, my boys left the inverter on and with both banks, 1995 original Lead acid purchased the 85 dollar manual crank from Volvo, never dreamed would be using it so soon, it worked but setup a starter battery system after that. Good too have done it, nice feature. Wife And I were going too sell her and trade up, went too the Annapolis show, decided on a major refit instead, the only thing that gave us a wow was looking at some used Hylas 54 centerboard, bronze swing keel, from 4’- 8.5’. Full cutter rig. Also 550,000 but in brand new shape for a 20o3 boat. I see that as my final Boat, very fast and comfortable. But My Starlight put 7200nm on her up too Bangor ME, and down to the cape. Been through a NE on her at block Island, she is a very strong boat for her 10,500 displacement, she sailed from France, custom boat as you can get from the factory I am the second owner. They say the French built ones are different, I would have to agree, oh even with all the bolts off the could not get the keel to come off , so they just put in the new bolts, to the torque got them from Beneteau. The old bolts were clean still have them. Love the keel performs great. If you ever get too Long Island drop me a line best steak and Lobster are here. Dinner and drinks on me..

How did my husband and I and our dog ever spend 3 years in the Caribbean on a sailboat without all the amenities? Happily! We didn’t need a water maker or pressure hot water and a shower in the head (we had a sun shower and side curtains). The only conveniences we had that I can think of were an outboard for the dinghy, autopilot, depth sounder, chart plotter, solar panels and a manual windlass. We did have a roller furling jib-I didn’t want it, but admitted it was nice to keep the jib out of the way when anchoring. I always went sailing for the adventure, not the comfort.

A list: A real propeller, not a folding prop. A big stainless steel bathroom sink. An extra small extra light diesel motor. The front Vee berth shrunk down to a bosun's locker. 2 side by side fin keels, not a center. Simple hanking sails. Several chest freezers scattered throughout the boat. A portable water maker in a suitcase. A very light very strong buoyant hull. Yank or crank sail ropes and pulleys. A minimal pair of 6 volt batteries. An outdoor grille and a vented swing oven. Lots of overhead and horizontal fans. No vinyl upholstery. Lots of small tie downs for your waist clip and cargo nets. Nothing but LED lights. Many 12 volt outlets end to end. Radios in bunks, galley, and cockpit. A radio direction finder. A storage slot for extra solar panels below deck. No center tables. Extra light woodwork.

You will never get the perfect boat unless you build it from scratch to your specifications. Even then, its only as good as what you want to do with it. My only problem is the prices of these used boats/yachts are vastly artificially inflated to what their real value is. But Tim has really good points to take note.

For a beginning cruising, I think you stay under 100k. For 67k for a Hunter 37, you could update this boat for a total cost of under 100k. I just don't see the value in a 45-foot boat with an acquisition cost of 350k.

After replacing all running rigging, canvas, sails, cushions in Solon and cockpit, refrigeration, davits, rudder from Foss foam, all electronics we have put as much in as we paid for her. I hope new boat buyers know that 5-10% annual upgrades are typical. That said it is a great boat for a couple or family on the bay.

What’s nice is if you look at the boats for sale in the 2000 -2007 age range they have become more and more affordable and have a lot of these features. I would also suggest a good gennaker or code zero for down wind sailing. The extra knots of speed is just amazing.

A flat hull is not a determining factor in offwind speed unless the boat can actually start to surf or plane. SA/D, D/L, and wetted surface dominate for displacement hulls. Broad and flat sections aft may add to stability off the wind and sail carrying capability.

Thanks for all your valuable tips an hindsight info. Many of these things Ive been pondering, after buying a rusty boat to repair an live on. Im converting it to launch. I was lead into buying this "by divine string pulling" from all different directions but things happen for a reason. Aft bed principle {I knew v berth no good but was thinking center - but now aft makes more sense. But beause my boat was so small 28ft Ive extended and widened back since had to replace sus rusty rear } The davit thing now becomes so clear thanks to you. Ive not been on boats as such. But want my own living space / my world. Sailing thing Ill figure out later but i dont like the current conept regards boom. Im thinking chop mast in half with a set up where there on the sides on a frame that pivots in centre of boat - idea being to use starter motor fly wheel to spin the mast setup and lock where you want with rectangle type sail up / down between mast. Idea being to use a micro controller to do the adjusting automatically. Its a "committed concept."

Sorry Tim, but I have to disagree with your boat choices but I do agree with you on features. I would consider a wing keel, sheel keel, or long keel (with the Brewer bite). I also agree with you on the rigging configuration. Solar can also be augmented with a wind generator or watt n' sea hydro generator. As to your suggested boats: Hunter Legend 37: Fin Keel, spade Rudder, Capsize Ratio (CR) 2.09, and total displacement of 14,000# with 6.7' draft. Catalina MKII 42: This boat is a possible maybe, but still: Fin keel, spade rudder, 6.7' draft, and a CR of 2.03. The Bal/Disp ratio is 40.5. She is a high performing coastal cruiser. Beneteau Oceanis 45 has a capsize ratio of 2.14 and a spade rudder. Also a SAD of 22.7 which means, to me, that she is going to be a handful to sail. IMHO, none of these boats qualify as being suitable for offshore. I would much prefer: cutter rig, skeg hung rudder, SAD of 20 or less, CR under 2.0, Bal/Disp of under 40, a 6' max draft and a comfort ratio of 25 or more. The Catalina 42 MK II , IMHO is about the best of the above bunch for venturing offshore. Again, IMHO she is also the best made of the three.

I bought the steel ketch offering. And as I refurbish this 40 year old, stripped out, I am keeping it all cheap and cheerful. Just enough solar panel to charge the iPad and batteries. A Honda generator for when I need it. No shower, no hot water, no water maker, no radar, no freezer, no fridge, no microwave, no macerating toilet, no lavatory, no sewing machine….and only two berths and a settee for two lying down. And no teak. Heck, there is not even a table in the boat, except for nav space. None. Navigation tools will be robust however. And I have a pressurized drinking water dispenser and an antique kerosene lamp. Sleeping for two, meals for four, drinks for six.

Nice choices. Personally I would have suggested the subsequent generation of Hunter (35.5/37.5 & 40.5) as they were a significant evolution (iron keel replaced with lead, proper walk through sugar-scoop) and were the pinnacle of the hunter racer/cruiser design with a proper backstay. Beyond those they became more associated with bloated floating condos. One of the reasons we went with a h40.5 (4.9' draft, 20,000lbs, etc). Fyi, in '91 11 Hunter 35.5 sailed from NYC to Bermuda with each boat only double-handed, raced in what was the Omega Gold Series during hurricane Grace passing through (that became later known as 'the perfect storm'). Were skippered by some of the 'legends' of the day including Paul Cayard, Chris Dixon, Magnus Holberg, Marc Boet, Peter Isler and others in 60kn gusting weather flying spinnakers, full main sails, etc.. Then after the event they double-handed back to the US from Bermuda. They are very underappreciated and undervalued sailboats... Very interesting and thought-provoking, thank you. I am in the process of selling up my land assets and looking for a sail boat to live on forever. My concentration has been on small size and simplicity to be easy to handle and with lower ongoing maintenance and occasional marina costs. Also, perish the thought, buying new to obtain that simplicity that I cannot find on the used market, get the warranties and be assured of many years with little maintenance or replacement required. I would prefer an electric inboard but the CE certification system has not caught up with current technologies yet. Hence my two targets are the Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 and the Scandinavia 35 - both built in Poland. With my preferred spec there is little difference in price. The Scandinavia 35 would lend itself more to the occasional skippered charter perhaps and have a little more space. The Beneteau would be easier to sell, if ever I had to. Thoughts?

Don’t think you need wind vane steering. If you have an autopilot you’ll never use the wind vane. Wind vanes were the thing to have before the advent of solar panels.
@Robzilla501 Жыл бұрын
I get that, but having used a wind vane before they are quiet, you’re not using battery power, it extends the life of the auto pilot, it’s a backup in case of an auto pilot failure and can provide an emergency rudder

Just my experience. It’s a heavy thing, sometimes in the way, hanging there off the stern never used and wouldn’t work nearly as well as the emergency tiller. If crossing oceans, you might still want one as a back up. If you’re going West to East, don’t you want to head further north than the Azores?

You keep your steel ship away from my fiberglass old full keel sailboat in a big storm. The only way a hole can be punched into my boat, is from your steel ship. I don't need your help my old sailboat can survive any storm at sea.

Hylas 54 centerboard, but my Beneteau Oceanis 350 winged keel 1989 is our current boat put 7200nm on her. She is very fast, has all the comfort but sailed on my friends Hylas my next door neighbor at my Marina in Greenport, well that is my end boat has plenty of room for my sons now and their families.. The air is wonderful not to mention the Washing Machine, As you hit your 60’s the comfort level is important and have crewed her in a few Newport to Bermuda Race. She can handle the rough 50 knot seas..

I need a boat that doesn't rot or corrode and is self cleaning.
