As Erik Wait recently pointed out, putting natural cork stoppers in bottles of distilled spirits is absurd. They're expensive. The advantages they have for wines (that are meant to be aged) don't matter with spirits, which don't age in the bottle. And all the disadvantages involving their tendency to decay still obtain.
@jamesxenophon9505 Жыл бұрын
It's not absurd from a marketing perspective though. It's the psychology of consumers - it scarcely matters what's in the bottle if the bottle itself looks cheap.

@@jamesxenophon9505 But with very rare exceptions (e.g. Monkey 47 Gin), the fact that a bottle of spirits has a natural cork stopper isn't even visible to the consumer until the bottle is opened. So its marketing impact is all post-purchase, i.e. not very significant.

My first experience with Bowmore was their 12 year. It was on sale at a local liquor store for only $28, and I mistakingly thought it was one of the cheap "no-name" offerings. I was new to Whisky, and was mislead by the price. I think it also affected my enjoyment of it. Because while it wasn't bad by any means, it was also far from great. So I kept exploring and buying/trying new brands of Scotch/Irish/Japanese/Canadian/Bourbon etc... and one day came back around to the Bowmore 12 when I was going to a neighbors house to hang out and do a little drinking. So, remembering that it wasn't great, and figuring the 2 of us would probably finish the bottle, I grabbed it. Well... that 2nd go around was definitely different lol It didn't become a favorite, but it was much better than I had remembered. So much so that I left early so we didn't finish the bottle 😅

Mooch rating for this episode: 1 +1 for informing us about the danger of broken corks and how to dispose of em. Still wanted a comparison with the classic Bowmore line up.

The e150 does nothing to flavour, or if it does, it is insignificant. And in no way alters flavour as much as proofing whisky down. Which this whisky was. Both a lower proof and colouring appeals to the general whisky buying crowd. Which keeps distilleries in business and allows for special/other offerings.

You missed the Bowmore Distillery? It is so worth going if you can at some point. This is such a lovely whisky. Rex's smile said it all! This Bowmore 11 yr whisky should have been at a higher ABV. The cork - nooo!!! I learn a lot from you both!! Cheers!! P.S. Here in Vancouver, Canada, and all over the country we miss Gordon Lightfoot.

I wish you guys would do poor man's blends like the one done during Rex "month". You could do it on Fridays since Rare Whiskey Fridays are long gone and it would be a great replacement. The Fitzgerald half bottle you guys did several years ago is great, but now Belle Mead is gone, so an updated blend would be great! Plus, I was hoping that the 2016 Birthday Bourbon poor man's blend would make an appearance at some point. Anyway, keep up the fantastic work fellas!!

You are likely to have better luck getting a cork like that out with a two-prong cork puller. Slide it straight in gently (not trying to be salacious here), then turn it back and forth to loosen the cork. Pull it out slowly (there I go again) in a twisting manner. That will keep the cork from grabbing the neck of the bottle.

Coming from the wine world, we wouldn't use a corkscrew for a situation like this. The right tool for this situation is an "Ah So" tool. If done properly, it will extract failing corks easily.

That's so weird, because the Bowmore 12 is so ashy and oaky with not a lot else going for it, I'd have loved to have had a little green apple or honey sweetness in it to make it a bit more complex...and I'm not a fan of sherry cask Scotch, so most of their other offerings don't appeal to me...
