After a very long time of looking for a job and many closed doors, I found a job which I accepted although it was far from being what I really wanted. Very quickly, I knew I wasn't going to like it. I felt very depressed - why did God put me in that job when I had been waiting for a long time? I quit 6 werks later. I felt relieved, yes. But I haven't found anything else, and still don't know if it was God or me having me leave. So your "rule" does not always apply.

The distinguishing comes for me when I know I’m settled, praying, in quiet meditation and telling him I’m waiting on him to provide the answer. Then, within a few days, and even that very day many times, the answer will come through one of the ministers I listen to, or a very unlikely person. For me, the key is don’t ever say my thought aloud because the enemy is waiting to take advantage in some way, whether it’s thwarting my plans or tricking me by, knowing the desire of my heart because I spoke it. Only God knows the very thoughts and intentions of the heart, so they don’t need to be said. Also, I check my thoughts with the word of God. God and his word are one, so he can’t go against himself. Additionally, I make sure I don’t act hasty on any thought. I’ve learned that haste is not from God, unless it’s obvious things like putting out a kitchen fire or something.😊 It’s also key for me to have a conscience void of offense, as stated in the Bible because it helps with clarity. With that being said, I truly enjoy being alone so that I’m not feeling others’ thoughts and feelings constantly and somehow unintentionally offending them. That causes my mind to be clogged up. Therefore, I’ve cut off a lot of people from my life, without any bad feelings on my part. I know my mission, regardless of whether they understand my purpose for doing so or not. It’s an individual walk with the Lord. Lastly, because I know that I am a conduit in which both bad and good thoughts can flow, I stay in prayer because I know the greatest battle that’s ever been fought is in the mind. I’ve learned to be still ( quiet, meditation) and know that He ( not my thoughts, strength or power) is God!

The job seeker my advice is to keep praying and tell God you are disappointed that you haven't found the job you are seeking and to praise him early in the morning. Show God you are trusting him and read the scriptures he doesn't disappoint. Don't give up.

I recently made a purchase of a $6000 arcade. I thought I could hear the holy spirit telling me not to purchase it but I was unclear if it was God or my own thoughts.
