The Climate and the Cross

The battle between ​evangelical Christians in the US over whether climate change is a call to protect the Earth, the work of God to be welcomed, or doesn’t exist at all.
Evangelicals in the US have traditionally been the bedrock of conservative politics, including on climate change. But a loud debate is happening across the country, with some Christians protesting in the name of protecting the Earth, seeing it as a duty to be done in God's name. ​One group has even built a chapel in the way of a pipeline and a radical pastor encourages his flock to put themselves in the way of the diggers. A firm supporter of Trump criss-crosses the country promoting solar power.
But there's still the traditional resistance - a climate scientist who denies the world is warming and a preacher in Florida who sees the fact he was flooded out as a good sign of divine presence. With stories from across the country featuring pastors and churchgoers, and showing conflict between generations, races and classes, could it be a surprising section of Christian Americans who might show hope for the country's attitude to climate change?

I've always thought that if the religious believes that God created the world just for them, they should be the first to take a stand to protect the environment.

They may, equally, believe that everything that happen's does so for a reason; that God will fix everything; that if the climate is damaged beyond repair it is because God wanted it so. I don't think there is anything about religion that would necessarily make people more inclined to take climate change more seriously. Besides, people justify virtually any and everything within their religious framework. It's a shame that yours isn't the dominant conclusion they make.

I can't believe that pastor from Florida, Jessie, at the 13 minute mark. He didn't seem to have any concern for anybody else within the area of his church and he was pleased that due to the hurricane he was able to move to a nicer area and church.. just so unbelievably selfish and non-charitable!

How can he call himself a chemist when he does not know the mass of carbon. Yes there is a rare isotope of carbon that has a mass of 14 but almost all carbon has a mass of 12.

It's not just that... what does atomar/molecular carbon have to do with heat retaining gasses such as CO2 and CH4, climate change is real, so is global warming. And the comment about "carbon footprint" made me cringe... these pseudo-scientist-high-school-teacher types need to give it a rest.

The issue is not 'CO2' bad - it's that the amount of CO2 in the air is rising so fast that it's destabilising the climate. Yes - CO2 levels were higher in the past, but so was the global temperature, and it took millions (not hundreds) of years to transition to that state, so ecosystems had chance to adapt. Fast shifts in atmospheric composition destabilise ecosystems. P.S. I'm a Christian.

The guy with the earthquakes must have escaped from the insane asylum. It's a good documentary on how christans in the USA feel about climate change. I think it's great that there are at least some religious people that accept it. But I just can't understand their viewpoint on the issue. It's all this god bullshit. I've also been awe struck by the stupidity of some of the reasons for why and why not they think this is happening. Hope they find a way to reality.

Religious loons refusing to deal with global warming reminds me of the old joke. A man was stuck on his rooftop in a flood and was praying to God for help. Soon a man in a rowboat came by and shouted to the man on the roof, "Jump in, I can save you." The man shouted back, "No, it's OK, I'm praying to God and he is going to save me." Then a motorboat came by. "Jump in, I can save you." To this the stranded man said, "No thanks, I'm praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith." Tell me, where has one climate biome turned into another? Climate is determined by location, not CO2. We've always had floods, hurricanes, tornadoes, weather disasters. Nothing has changed. All the predictions that Al Gore made in his movie have failed.

Yes, I totally agree that we should be protecting our planet as good stewards of God. Fact: There are currently 5 billion mobile (cell) phones in operation, not including mobile phone towers and infrastructure just to make it all work. If each phone required just 1 watt of electricity for charging, it equates to 5 gigawatt or 10 x 250 mega watt power stations. Then you have to factor in towers and infrastructure, which means more power stations. Technology comes at a environmental cost and we all use it!....
