Clint - AKA LGR or Lazy Game Reviews - started his retro computing and gaming KZbin channel way back in 2006. As others have come and gone, LGR's cozy, thoughtful, educational and - most of all - high production quality videos have stood the test of time. As a result, his channel has steadily grown to over 1.5M subscribers - not including his side channels LGR Foods and LGR Blerbs!
So let's chat all about old tech, KZbin, and everything else that takes our fancy.

I actually really like it when multiple people do videos on the same thing -- a coordination or collaboration is pretty cool, but even uncoordinated releases on the same topic are nkce. Like Clint says, it's nice to see different perspectives! And one person never really covers a topic exhaustively.

It was actually the CVS "disposable" video camera that people hacked and were able to reuse on their own rather than send it back to the store to have them transfer the videos off of it. The Flip cameras came out about a year later and were reusable from the start.

There will be something absolutely unique snd amazing in gaming again someday… and I hope I’m still young enough to care.

The problem isn't that there is nothing new, the problem is that it gets completely ignored. I've been a part of the industry and have tried doing some interesting stuff as well as other people I've met, but almost no one cares (and those that do can't really help). If you can't pitch a game in a sentence such as "it's like X, but with Y" it is ignored, and games that can do that really aren't doing anything radically new or different. The majority of game journalism and judging for award events is also just as shallow, this is why there's such a focus on games as art and not about creative and unique mechanics. It's really sad to watch an industry I loved as a child and worked hard to be a part of, just become a zombie because it's easier on everyone in the industry as a whole if things are kept stale.
@RetroGamingNook

@@Wolfenhex I would love to hear of a few modern games that you, or anyone, think are deserving of being played but have been ignored by the industry cause they are not the same old cash cows.
@Wolfenhex
@Wolfenhex 9 ай бұрын
@@RetroGamingNook That's going to be difficult to do because most games I'm aware of and have seen/played in person have gone off to never be finished because of lack of support, so there's no place to access them. I also know some don't want me to share their ideas because they wanted to be the first to market with them. I can share my experience with the game that really opened my eyes though, but unfortunately I can't link to it in comments (which is fine, don't want to turn this into a plug). It was a "simple 2D game" that was focused a lot on mechanics and tried to do some things not seen in other game. It was a "2d puzzle-platformer-shooter" that fully mixed in all three of those genres and in ideas like color theory (red touches blue and makes magenta, shoot magenta with green to defeat them). We actually did find an audience and would have people at our booth during trade shows, but it is too hard to target them online and word of mouth just isn't enough. Because color was a big part of the game, we reverse engineered a new product at the time called an RGB keyboard and controlled the colors of each key to add layers of extra immersion. We were the first game to have individual key color control on an RGB keyboard (as well as mouse). Because of this, we did get some support form hardware manufacturers (Corsair, EVGA, Logitech, Razor), but turns out people don't look at hardware companies press to learn about games. We even tried rolling our an SDK for other devs and a couple used it, but most of the time we'd get a "you f-ers are making this harder for the rest of us" kind of response. Being overlooked by press already because the game was too different (words from several press outlets, no one wants to figure out or explain something different when they need quick turnaround), we tried to see if the hardware integration could at least get some press -- nope, similar problem. Also no one thought anyone would buy an RGB keyboard. For the record, small press gave plenty of attention and praise, but no one looks at small press outlets and they often go under so fast it's difficult to even use their articles for quotes to help market a product. This is just a personal example of mine, but I've seen this happen to better examples and I'm sure it still goes on (haven't gone to any industry events in a few years to keep up with what's going on).

I was thrilled about the Steam Deck and pre-ordered one within 10 minutes of the page going up (and only that slowly because the page refused to process the first couple of times). By the time I got it I no longer had a job that involved commuting, and I literally used it a total of 45 minutes playing through Aperture Desk Job and doing some updates and then put it in a drawer for a year until selling it to a friend. Not sure why someone who hates mobile gaming, has a desktop gaming rig, and no longer had a commute would ever have a use for a Steam Deck. But I am certainly glad it exists for all those people who have a good use case for it!

Great video! Clint talks about making a conscious decision at one point to stop being negative in his videos, and that's the No. 1 reason I love LGR. As much as I enjoy some videos from more modern tech KZbinrs like Linus, Gamers Nexus, etc., the one thing they all have in common is that they LOVE to complain about everything, especially the usual suspects Intel, Apple and Nvidia. And it's getting so old. They all do it -- not just the aforementioned channels -- and it's obvious they're doing it for clicks because of this collective conscious (hive mind/zeitgeist) blind love and infatuation for AMD. But Clint has never seemed to be one to just chase clicks, and I love him for it. He seems to be passionate about his hobby, and even though he has now made a career out of it, he's not greedy with live sponsorships. I pay for YT Premium to avoid ads, so there's nothing more annoying than clicking on a 10-minute video only to have to sit through 3 minutes of ads. So, if you're reading this, Clint: Please don't change! Though I'd still watch even if you did live sponsorships, we love you for who you are, and your uniqueness is part of your greatness. Cheers!

For sponsorships at the end of the video, if they are done right, they can be good. Good examples are Ryan George and Daniel Thrasher. But they are both comedians and do their ads as comedy sketches. Sometimes Ryan George's "ADstronaut" skits are better than the video that they are attached to. Do love that Clint won't change what he does for sponsorships.

It's rare to get one of those interviews with someone "big on $PLATFORM" where you find yourself liking them more and more as the conversation goes on. I definitely have that "the ones you don't want/expect to get big become the huge hits" thing. Recognise plenty of greatest hits from the section on educational computing. We weren't allowed to play with the school turtle (a Valiant) outside of open days, though - it spent most of its time sitting on top of a supply cupboard out of reach. On the synchronicity, that's definitely about to happen in my case - I'm currently working on something which mentions the DX2/66, how relatively late people were buying them as new machines in the UK, and that particular golden era of gaming. And I've definitely had that search only to find "the only other person who's done a video on this is LGR" thing before. Bit mean talking about Play Expo and not warning Clint about the Norbreck, though!

I respect not doing sponsorship. Sponsorship puts us YT premium subs in a bad spot because it's like why am I paying for this when I still have to see an ad. I've always thought if you have to check that paid content box the video should not be eligible for adsense ads. That would force sponsors to have to pay up if that's what they want to be also it would make creators to decide how they choose to make there revenue.

At 41:00 Hacking hardware in general or even games with like cheat codes, is something I really miss. I noticed that a lot of people don't even seem to think about it anymore these days.

There’s a general decline in technical creativity, I believe it sources from the influence of the younger generation not needing as much imagination when they were younger. Imagination isn’t really something needed now, they can just plug in and get things, pretending isn’t needed anymore. Example: as a kid I built my own x-wing cockpit to play in, it consisted of cardboard boxes, styrofoam parts and electronics from a surplus warehouse. It looked nothing like an X-Wing, but in my mind it did. Now, you just plug into a game and get one. If you want to build it, 3D print the parts.

We have Starlink in rural France, it is fast, but you need to make sure you have a clear view of the sky, as it needs to track satellites about. It can be quite fussy about this. We have a big tree that obscures a small part of its 'view' and we get drop outs fairly regularly.

Such respect for youtubers who don't do sponsors. Im sure they could make far more money but it demonstrably lessens the quality of a video and you can never quite trust the review opinion of someone who can be bought off

Haha, would be fun to have another chat but I don't think he typically does interviews on his channel? Personally I think he should start a podcast, I could listen to him talk about anything. 😁

AT&T did the same crap to me. I live about 45 miles south of Chicago, in a larger suburban city, and they kept telling me two months till fiber was in the area…… For almost 2 1/2 years. And that was calling them every three months. I finally just switched companies and I’m much happier. The stupid part is my friend across town may be a mile and a half for me had AT&T fiber from the start. And he lives in an unincorporated area out side of the city. 😝

Unfortunately I predated the BBC micro and all that jazz. Just as I was leaving my school got its first computer - a RM 380Z - a chassis style box that ran CP/M, and a keyboard that was clearly built by a metal basher in a workshop, Never used it, instead I was off to uni, where I discovered the Commodore PET. That was me sold, and a course in electronics morphed into a career in software!

Indeed, RM's Z80-based machines preceded the RM Nimbus mentioned in the video.

I get pretty good broadband in very rural England. Dl 881.5 ul 311.9 on the speed test this morning. i use B4RN. They have been digging cables all around me. You have to dig the cable into your house or oay them to do it. Alot the digging is done by volunteers. Small businesses get government grants

Very nice talk you had there :) LGR thinks new games feels like the same old and does not innovate. I find that interesting since I feel kind of the oposite. I want new games to be more like the old games. Specifically I want more games like the first Far Cry, MOHAA, Delta Force, Crysis.

1:19:00 To add to the conversation about games not being interesting, I have a hard time finding any modern games that peak my interest as well. It's very samey, and even a lot of indie games feel samey at times although thankfully not as much. I usually just go back to playing emulated SNES games, because my fond memories of gaming go back to the Super Nintendo.
