I like the concept of "poirot tries to solve a mystery without going to the scene" much more than I like the execution.

The charm of the Suchet adaptation is David Suchet. He is more present than in the book, although if you are someone who only watched the adaptations, you would note that this is an episode where he is sort of a guide to another investigator and not as prominent. The "girl with the broken leg" is turned into two girls in a treehouse who provide information. The adaptations, especially as they attempted to do all the Poirot stories, do venture somewhat from the books, taking dramatic liberties to keep the flow, so to speak. Oh, and OMG 999 subscribers! It's like your odometer turning over lol

Huh, good to know- I’m surprised they didn’t do more to bring him into the story, but I guess Christie didn’t give them a ton of room to do that without altering things pretty radically 😂. And yes, I’m so excited to have made it to this point with the channel! It’s been so much fun ❤️

I am so pleased to hear your comments about "The Clocks." -- from 6 years ago. I'm reading Christie's mysteries in publication order and just finished this book. I felt cheated. Christie, I know, could have written Poirot out of this this book and left some of the twists and turns alone to made a book 2-fer mystery that would be satisfying, but I could not understand what would have made Christie put in such strange scenes unless she had to bow to outside pressures. I have a bit of trepidation about the later books that I'll soon read, but I will continue to read knowing that Christie is a very special writer. Thanks again!!! Please keep up your wonderful, intelligent work!

I have the same feelings about this book. Poirot only in 3 chapters! come on!! I have the feeling that the publishers asked her to write a Poirot novel and she just inserted him somehow.

It's honestly very that-- there's promise here, but it feels so contrived :/

Ok...Kinda late to the party here but I think this is worth mentioning: The Clocks was the first Agatha Christie book that I have read (this spring actually), and that happened mainly because a classmate of mine really enjoyed it, but also because I've got it at the price of aproximately one pound (in Romanian Lei). This book made me adore Agatha Christie and also literally got me into reading in general. Being the first one I've read, I may or may not have a soft spot for it, but not knowing much about Poirot and having no expectations regarding his role in the book, made the whole experience much better for me. As of now, I have read around 15 books of hers and the Clocks still remains in my top 5. That being said, I think that the surroundings, the order of reading and many other things can easily influence your opinion.

I just finished this book and was looking for someone's review/comments on this. I am so glad, I came across your video and have subscribed to your channel 😊 I felt so many things were left unexplained in the book.. like what was in the Snowflake Laundry basket? I was hoping for the girl's revelation to add something significant to the plot..

Oh my gosh, I kinda felt the same way about *The Moving Finger* which I just read. Miss Marple didn't show up until (roughly) page 175 and the book is only 234 pages long! Anyway, I noticed that your subscriber number was 999, so I hit that button to push it to 1K! Yay!!

Oh really? See, that’s one of the Marples I haven’t read... but I’m glad for the heads up! I guess she just got to the point in her career where she didn’t want to make the books about the beloved characters she was supposed to be featuring??? 😂 And THANK YOU- that seriously made my day ❤️

For me, a Christie involving any sort of “spy” is unsatisfactory. I’m a lifelong fan of Christie, and this wouldn’t be anywhere near a favorite. Thanks for a good talk, and congratulations on reaching 1k subs! ETA: I really hated Taken at the Flood.

I’m more into her spy/thrillers stuff in the 20s & 30s, but yeah... after that it gets pretty rough 😬. And thank you!! I’m delighted to have found so many people to nerd out about books with! Oh, and Taken at the Flood is terrible IMO. It’s the writing style that most bothers me, but it’s just not a cohesive book

The adaptation is decent, mainly because Poirot is actually in the story for the most part. And it has strong acting in the adaptation, especially from Suchet. Though he's always a delight, so there is that. I haven't read the book, but the adaptation didn't feel too cheesy.

Yeah... this ain't a good one. You said it perfectly: the expectations set up by the premise aren't carried through satisfactorily at all. This one has elements in the beginning that you expect Christie to do something amazing with based on her previous work (all those clocks!), and then it's just... meh. I have read people say that Colin is meant to be Superintendent Battle's son, but I can't actually remember anything from the book that implies this. I haven't read this for years and years however. Was this also the book where Poirot has been spending his time solving past crimes like the Lizzie Borden case? Or writing his memoirs? I got the impression he was pretty lonely and a lot less social by this point. Oh gosh, I was cracking up at your discussion of the scene of the girl with the broken leg. YES! Why on earth would anyone let a stranger holding a knife in to see a young girl and then leave her there with him?! 😂 If I'm going to be charitable to this book at all though, I will say that I remember liking this scene once you leave that aspect aside. And I think I liked the characters of Edna and the crazy cat lady, but my impressions may be overlaid by the adaptation, which is pretty decent, though not the best. Looking forward to Third Girl next week. I feel like I liked it even less than The Clocks, so I am interested to hear your thoughts as someone who liked it better. PS 1000 subscribers, woo! Congratulations! Very well deserved 😀

Sorry guys, I like this Christie. I especially like the audiobook which is read/narrated by Hugh Frazer. Sure I prefer the "cozy" Christie mysteries but HF's talent had it's way with me ! Cheers !

The way the clocks are used is the biggest crime of this book. I didn't hate the whole thing as much as you did but I'd still place it among her worst.

The Suchet adaptation is at least entertaining, but there are better episodes. I haven't read the book yet, but for what you say I'm kind of scared of this book because I don't want to DNF an Agatha Christie

I’m going to have to hunt that episode down... definitely curious to see how they work with the source material! And like I said, this book still has its charms... her voice & style come through well enough. It’s just not her best work & would have been better as not a Poirot novel IMO

bookslikewhoa I'm really disappointed that there were people forcing Agatha to put Poirot in books she clearly didn't have the intention of putting him in. If that hadn't happened we might have gotten more books as Good as Crooked House or And Then There Were None
