This film was never intended to be a Cloverfield movie. When it was finished the studio had no idea what to do with it or how to market it so they took it to J.J. Abrams, slapped Cloverfield in the title, and inserted a few scenes in post to link it to the Cloverfield universe. It's the exact same thing they did with 10 Cloverfield Lane. It was originally called The Cellar and had absolutely nothing to do with Cloverfield but Bad Robot bought it and changed the name and added a few shots to the end to tie it in with the original.

Having all of these different science fiction stories going on under the "Cloverfield" banner was an interesting idea for a franchise, but the way that Paradox tried to explain the monster's origin just felt lame. As if the writers didn't really know what the answer was, and figured that being vague would come across as clever. Might have been better to leave the stories less connected.

@dennett3167 жыл бұрын
The marketing was the best part...the movie didn't deserve the unique release it got. It was a mish mash that didn't blend well. It doesn't actually tie into the first movie at all, other than a really loose explanation for why weird shit is happening across dimensions, and a tacked on jump scare at the end. That was it. 10 Cloverfield Lane seemed to indicate the series was going down the branded anthology road, and I was fine with that. This clumsy attempt at explaining how that's all linked wasn't needed, and wasn't what I wanted either. It's WAY below the other two movies, especially Cloverfield Lane. I thought the body horror stuff could've been cool, but then Chris O'Dowd loses his arm and treats it like a casual joke, then the arm is sentient and gives them a message about something it shouldn't really know...and they killed what little promise the movie had stone dead. Some ole Bullshit for me, and that's so disappointing to be saying about a Cloverfield film.

I think the concept of Paradox is great, but the execution can be confusing. I agree with Martin, on it's own (take out the Cloverfield name) as a SCI-FI thriller, it's enjoyable. Wish they would have developed the characters more, esp the lead and her family. As far as the way they dropped the movie, it was like the good ol days when we couldn't review trailers for months on end before hand! I miss those days of yore :) As always, thanks for the review DT!

This was a decent, if not cliched, space thriller bottle film. If they didn't try to shoehorn a way to make this a prequel to the first two movies, it might have been a little bit better. well i like how this movie was attempting to show the dangers of particle acceleration and how not only it affected the previous two movies but countless universes.What ruined this for me was the A.R.G. they had set up since the first clover field movie. i was invested in the conspiracy of this mysterious company called Tagurato and how they possibly either awoken this monster or drilled into another dimension. The A.R.G. expanded with Howard as it was implied that he worked for Tagurato or one of thier subsidies. While working for the company howard either herd or found something from a satellite in space thus creating that bunker because he knew what was coming. What those two films had in common was Tagurato in front of these weird discoveries. With the paradox movie i feel like they got rid of of all the A.R.G. back story and suggested that those two other movies were from individual universes and not in the same time line If anyone wants to know more about the A.R.G. look it up on youtube from (inside a mind channel or the atz show ) they give the best explanations Show less REPLY

The Cloverfield universe is an interesting one. A lot of people might be more skeptical due to its "outsider consumer" approach. Meaning, those who don't know or haven't followed the ARG (Augmented reality game) that has been created around the "Clover-verse". The ARG is what actually makes this universe seem even more interesting, due to all the diverse events that have taken place, "behind the scenes". I can understand where fans might not be too invested in it without knowing about all the details behind the movies - because it actually takes going in and researching it etc. Thankfully, i've managed to find videos that line up all the evidence and ties in all the clues and puts all of the information among the ARG and the 3 movies' timelines. It's basically all about a parent company, Tagruato, who's searching for a means of power / energy (i.e. energy company), they're up to some fishy stuff. The Shepard / God Particle / collider is actually responsible for connecting all 3 movies. Due to its particle accelerator punching a hole in space/time, it created a ripple of effects across 3 different dimensions of earth. Earth A) was Cloverfield in 2008. Earth B) was 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016 Earth C) is the Earth in Cloverfield Paradox. Theres actually another clover-verse movie coming out in Oct of 2018, called Overlord, which is supposed to be connected / affected by Cloverfield Paradox and takes place in WWII Nazi Germany-ish time line.

I had fun watching it but yeah, it is certainly not movie theater suited (then again, a lot of shit that shouldn't be in movie theaters makes it there). I agree that it's a mistake to want to get so specific on where things started or came from, at least this early on. Frankly, I always thought of the Cloverfield films to be an anthology of movies linked thematically (and very loosely at that) so I was never really looking for a specific background story that spells everything out.

Would be cool hearing what he has to add to their discussion especially coming from his screenwriting perspective since he has more of a developer lens when it comes to movies whereas everyone else comes to the table just as a casual viewer and movie fan so he might have some inside knowledge one what it takes to make the Cloverfield stories bankable as opposed to just whether the film made sense or was likable. =)

As a fan of the original, I loved the ending and the shit going down on Earth but that should've been a flashback (Which is what I thought they were gonna be) or completely left out. The monster as a whole is almost original perfection and I think was meant to be for 9/11 what Godzilla (The original) was for the Hiroshima nuclear bombings. The fact that it was stated to be a baby is even better and explains it's almost primal instincts as an animal that is scared and wants it's parents to guide it. This movie was definitely a let down but the cameo and Earth stuff was nice despite it being shoe horned on. That alone let's me give it a high rental. I agree with the DT crew tho, it feels like a bad Black mirror/Twilight Zone episode.

*Pros:* Great cinematography, score, production design, FX and visual story telling. Some strong, identifiable *sympathetic* characters in the leads. Diverse cast. Answers to questions arising about the Cloverfield Universe and from the first two films in the franchise. *Cons:* Narratively weak as it walks in the footsteps of and cribs from"Alien", "The Thing", "The Mist" and "Event Horizon". Too much switching between genres. Some plot holes and those are the scriptwriter's fault. At least they spared us the passel of Millennial douchebags that populated the first "Cloverfield". There wasn't a single sympathetic character in that lot and I was rooting for Baby - the kaiju - to slurp every last one of them down its maw.
