Hello, highway designer here. I know that you said that this isnt a real clotoid. Just wanted to add little nore info that curves like the one you designed are used in real world, however mostly in intersections. I spent at least 5 minutes trying to find how to name these type of curves with two different radiuses however without any luck. I would call it like biradius curve or something similar. The curve in question is called "krzywa koszowa" in polish and its name originated from swedish manual to road design in 1930ish where it is called "kornsningskurvor". Real clotoid has its radius gradually changing from infinity (aka straight) to desired radius over the distance. Anyway, great vid, cheers

Clothoid loops ease off the acceleration experience by the passenger and driver on a cloverleaf highway. This makes the ride significantly nicer and less painfull. Traditional perfect circle loops have sudden significant shift in acceleration which can cause pain on riding the loops. Its like suddenly speeding up then slowing down in a short time frame.

You mentioned it but I mention it anyway as I was thinking it (having studied Railway Tech): Yes, railways do use this method, with a curve leading in to the curve. Because railway curves are also banked (which rollercoasters are not btw for obvious reasons) this curve is also the lead in to the full bank. With modern tamping machines all this is just in the computer, but in the old days you had to measure it when adjusting the tracks. You also needed to measure it manually before the modern machines that do it while driving on the tracks. Its really something I like :) Oh, and on the railway there are no straight tracks. Its just infinite radius :)

To be nitpicky, this is a clover-turbine, not a clover-stack. In a stack interchange, the left turns turn in front of each other. In turbines (and windmills) opposing left turns cross over each other. The difference between turbines and windmills is where the road that you drew at 12:52 connects. On a windmill, it connects to the main road, to the center of where the main road crosses the left turns; in a turbine it connects - anywhere else, really - but usually to the right turn ramp as you did.

The ease-in and ease-out trick might even help traffic flow stats. Cars and trucks drop speed for corners and if they drive slower then assigned speeds it makes the road more red. I've noticed using node controller to twist the road up to 10 degrees so they lean in also helps a bit to make them go faster, so they drive closer to the intended speed. It doesn't do much but on a map with a lot of sharp corners it can give you that 1%

A "braided diamond" interchange would be a beast. I'd love to see how Cities Skylines handles one...It's like the diverging diamond interchange but for highways with all highway directions swapping to the left side. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interchange_%28road%29#/media/File:I-95_and_695_Interchange_Baltimore.jpg It really is the smallest footprint with the most efficient (fewest overpasses-8) for a non-weaving interchange - without any crawl inducing 270° loops. I'm not sure why it's not used anywhere, and even the referenced location has changed to a stack interchange.

Nice design. 👍 It works well and looks pretty from the air, which we all know is the most important thing in highway design! You're absolutely correct about the clothoid curves, but if I were to offer a criticism, they're still way too tight for a system interchange. 14u is about 112 meters which gives a turn radius of 56 m at the tightest point. That's about a 25 mph (40 kph) curve. Ideally a service interchange should not require a change in vehicle speed, or at most a 15% reduction if possible. At least they should in real life. I'd personally reserve a loop that tight for a service interchange. Lots of folks don't care about realism, and that's perfectly OK! Your sandbox. We also have to make some compromises due to the limits of the map size. I get that. That said, for folks that are looking for some reference design guidlines, here are some useful numbers for road design: # Speed -- Minimum Radius / Usual Radius 45 mph -- 179 m / 226 m 50 mph -- 231 m / 291 m 55 mph -- 293 m / 451 m 60 mph -- 366 m / 604 m 65 mph -- 451 m / 745 m 70 mph -- 552 m / 916 m 75 mph -- 674 m / 1010 m 80 mph -- 814 m / 1221 m Also, for urban streets... 15 mph -- 14 m 20 mph -- 30 m 25 mph -- 55 m 30 mph -- 91 m 35 mph -- 138 m 40 mph -- 203 m 45 mph -- 274 m I snagged those from a street and highway design guide at some point and jotted them down. Sorry that I don't have a link to the original. While I'm dumping numbers, for the US Interstate Highway System... 4% Grade -- max through generally flat land 5% Grade -- permissible when the route must traverse rolling hills 6% Grade -- max in mountains Finally, some grades taken from consultation with commercial truck drivers... 3% -- cruising at highway speed 4% -- no worries 5% -- straight roads ok; arterials, commercial/industrial districts ok 6% -- depends on how straight it is, how long it is, how heavy the load 7% -- US Highway System maximum 8% -- FULL CAUTION! Not going to be able to stop. This is the hard limit on commercial/industrial roads. 9% -- Max for residential collectors 10% or more -- Come to a complete stop at the top and descend carefully in 1st gear 15% -- Max for local residential roads (good luck getting your moving van up/down there!) Hope that helps for the folks that are into such things.

I wonder if you’ve ever made interchanges with massive highway roads or multiple sections of highway going each way.
@princekamoro38692 жыл бұрын
If we're going for realism, we cannot be narrowing the highway down to two lanes in the middle of the interchange. AASHTO's highway manual has a section called "basic number of lanes" which basically says to keep a consistent number of through lanes regardless of exits (contrary to what many C:S players recommend for lane math). Lane balance is resolved by adding auxiliary lanes where necessary.
@bigzigtv7062 жыл бұрын
True but i think traffic AI pathfinding mechanics make it an issue as thru cars will still sit in the right lane causing unnecessary congestion for the exiting traffic. Just the way the game handles lane switching could be improved, but honestly that may be realistic cuz ppl suck at driving
@TimothyGaetke2 жыл бұрын
The real world is messy. There's an example of a similar interchange in my hometown of Reno, NV. Westbound and southbound both reduce to two lanes in the center of the interchange (not exactly the way it's done here: there are lane merges). Isn't it possible the "basic number of lanes" is just two lanes?
@YUMBL2 жыл бұрын
The base number of lanes could easily be considered 2 here.
@princekamoro38692 жыл бұрын
@@YUMBL Pretty sure they try to make it equal to the number you see in stretches between interchanges (not counting weave lanes between closely spaced ramps - those are auxiliary lanes). After looking at system interchanges on Google Maps in urban areas (and I mean urban, closer to the center than the edge), some follow this principle, some don't. I wonder if high traffic system interchanges (I'm talking stacks) get special treatment because of the sheer volume of turning traffic? Or maybe it's practical difficulties of merging multiple lanes of turning traffic into the mainline in a reasonable amount of distance, especially given how squished together those interchanges can be. Rural interchanges of course HAVE to follow this principle, because the required minimum is two lanes; they have no spare lanes to drop.
@princekamoro38692 жыл бұрын
Okay a lot more urban system interchanges maintain basic number of lanes than it initially looked like. It turns out, it takes a LONG distance for multiple entrance lanes to merge into the mainline, so limiting the inspection to the interchange's immediate surroundings can be misleading.

I'm wondering if the same logic for interchanges could help traffic flow in a city, by moving conflict points to four or more junctions and having dedicated roads for certain directions. Instead of one main artery a city could have two main roads that form a certain circular pattern or maybe an inner and outer circle. From this another layer, the collector roads, can branch out. But these do not need to be symmetric (or even two way?). @scamp50002 жыл бұрын
You're right that first suggestion is a turbine, as I looked into it, the bridging would make it cost more most probably. But what if you took my second suggestion, start with the straight divided highway roads as at the beginning, keep the center circle as is, fully connected as a round-a-bout, do not use the horse shoe ramps, then have eight ramps come off the round-a-bout to each section of the highway roads? Technically it would still be 2 levels, have almost same footprint, with less bridges thus costing less. Yes? I don't know what the interchange name would be. Just wondering if that would work the same or not.

Could you show how to merge 3 extremely super high traffic, 3 lane highways into one, I am on vanilla xbox edition. Thank you!

DO any good stories start with a highway overpass? ...I can see some sort of YA novel starting on one - about suicide, or something. Or maybe a Steven King novel of some sort.

Is there any way to generate enough traffic that a free flowing interchange like this would struggle in C:SL?
@YUMBL2 жыл бұрын
No, because its free flowing. And if it did struggle it would be a matter of widening the curves for flow.

Another episode of YUMBL making slightly more advanced roundabout

A cloverstack is not really related to a roundabout.

can you make some six way interchanges
@MinecraftWarrior222 жыл бұрын
I'm a little dissatisfied with the video. I'm a big fan of the clover stack and it's variant (example interchange in Louisville KY existing I-65 and I-265 system interchange, and one that is being adapted between between I-64 and I-265, again in Louisville KY). You did not go over being able to modify an existing clover interchange into a clover stack and that the stacks can be put where you need them for asymmetrical traffic flow to suit your needs.

Having a unit length of 20 makes me suspect it's actually 3R. If it's 3R you can make any size.

Whats 3R?
@RustyWalker2 жыл бұрын
@@YUMBL Your small radius was 7 units. Your large radius was twice that. The distance along the diagonal was very close to three times it, hence 3R, as close as dammit. A useful mnemonic if not actually true

How do I U turn in this interchange? If I'm going north and the place I want to reach is in the south direction, how do i go from from north to south ?
@YUMBL2 жыл бұрын
Are you commenting this on every video? Not all interchanges have a U turn.
