Technically, Disney has every legal right to do this, and they didn't care until Rewritten began monetizing Disney's intellectual work. Literally every company takes down fan projects if they ask for money, simply because they are profiting off of something they don't own. Not just that, but it sends a bad signal to other fans that make these projects if they don't stop the monetization, telling these other fans they can get away with it. Then, you have a bunch of people stealing an IP, and using it for financial gain, and the company that created the IP is approached by the federal government and LOSES their copyright for the product. No joke, this is what happened to Aspirin, used to be a brand and people began copying it, and Aspirin did nothing to them, and then literally lost their copyright because they never defended it.

I think there should be a big re-examining of copyright law and that any IP that is not actively being used for more than five years should go public domain. that way if Disney wanted to retain ownership they would have to at least be including imagery of it in promotions or releasing merch of it.
