Honestly, CPR shutting down is more sad than the original shutting down. The original sent a unique message and gets off. But Rewritten version just gets its code deleted and everybody's practically in a blue void

CPR developers became too greedy. They put ads on the website which is essentially them making profit off of a game they didn't even make. They knew this was wrong, which is why when the game launched it didnt have ads. If they just never added ads, we would all be fine. This is just another example of greedy developers

It’s definitely the advertisements, the rockhoppers daily treasure system was the nail in the coffin for Rewritten. I’d just wish these CPPSes would become non-profit/self funded, unfortunately it’s not so easy as it seems..

Even if it wasn't for adverts, not having adverts isn't a clear pass to get away with using their property. It was due to the situation that CPOnline put every server in, their main concern is Moderation and child safety. They knew about CPR when they had ads even as far back as 2018, they didn't care up until the point where CPO ruined the reputation for everything.

exactly, it's not easy. running an online server requires money, and a group of indie devs aren't gonna have wheelbarrows of money lying around, so they put ads on their site in order to gain enough revenue to keep it running. disney got mad and sued even though they killed their own franchise for the money and refused to sell it back. why not sell it back? they could make potential bank off that. does it really make them more money to cling to a dead franchise, rather than sell it to someone who'll pay big money to preserve it?

while what they did (running ads) was technically illegal, disney hasn't done anything with the club penguin IP since 2018, so it's a bit silly that they're going after private servers like that. but that's how copyright law works i guess, and this whole situation is really just a testament as to why copyright law desperately needs a reform. of course no such reforms will happen while the mouse is still standing, since the reason copyright law is messed up like it is right now is disney's fault in the first place 🙄 i think getting the police involved over copyright infringement of a DEAD IP is too much. cpr gave me the opportunity to relive one of my favorite childhood games as an adult and im gonna miss it very much.

Guys calm down. Club Penguin Rewritten was shut down for a good reason. The game was illegally using ads. One of the staff used that money to buy a house. Disney originally told the creators in 2017 that they could still run the game without ads. However the creators refused & lied to fans that they were in trouble for “using the Club Penguin name.”

I was a part of the community and if was an amazing place! My favorite part of it was the fact that the discord server had a text channel that you can go to and give recommendations on what to add to the game which gave us a lot of unique items. Honestly more than the ads getting them in trouble, Disney has a history of shutting down projects when it could compete with something they intend to make. And with how popular Clubs Penguin still is, I wouldn't be surprised if Disney has a project they're getting ready to launch and wanted to get competition out of the way. Theyve done it with Star Wars fan games, and then announced or released official games that give nearly identical experiences to the fan projects offered. So I genuinely won't be shocked if a Club Penguin 2.0 or something similar is announced.

But I feel like with where the company is financially rn, this is the sort of cash grab they would go for. Also to be perfectly clear, I don't see Disney rebooting club penguin as a good thing. First because they would 100% lock out anyone over 18 for security reasons, which means it's unlikely any hardcore club penguin players from the classic era would be allowed in, and second because in general I dislike when but corporations come in and squash fan made love letters just because the fan is getting a few pennies on the dollar next to the literal billions the company can make by announcing a park exclusive item.

I miss this game. I was F2P and still had so much fun. I remember recruiting entire armies of penguins to follow me around in red propeller caps throwing snowballs at indescriminate targets. We would go around and dang near pick up the entire server. I was undefeatable at the expert sled race lol. I used to play this with my cousin who was my best friend. Unfortunately he grew up to be a sociopath and I miss him and the memories we had on this game. He even got his parents to buy me membership once because there was zero chance mine ever would.

Two widely loved, community driven projects in a legal grey area, both taken down within a month of each other because both of the teams working on them got greedy and tried to make money in the worst ways they possibly could have instead of just doing the most logical thing and accepting donations directly.

As a penguin, (not a soldier of the old Club Penguin) I was very surprised and disappointed at the same time. When I first joined, I noticed something... ads. The advertisements were a very big mistake; especially having them for profit after the original game was closed down. Disney sending the DMCA to the Club Penguin Rewritten team was a terrible crap. Also, the arrests were unexpected to me, and maybe it could get to other people too.

I get it, I vehemently dislike disney, and seeing this, I'm on their side for the most part. Now I'd love to keep Club Penguin, (and a quick google search shows one that looks playable... haven't tried it yet) but profiting from it to your own pocket is when it's abusing a IP. If they weren't doing ads like that, then I'd be on the Rewitten's side. It's like taking an artist's work, screenshotting, slapping an ad/sponsor on it, and reposting it

This is a shame. I never played the online game. I've only played the two for the DS. I remember that I picked up a copy of the, I believe it was, the first game right before my birthday. I worked hard and saved up for it. Bought and was told I had to return because my birthday was right around the corner and that was the game I was getting. I cried. I felt so defeated. I loved these two games on the DS back in the day. Fingers crossed Disney let's people play this game again

club penguin carries many memories for me. Like disney, if you want to keep the rights to something DO SOMETHING WITH IT! whats the point of holding the game back from a release of ANY type of club penguin content. rewritten was almost as popular as club penguin as it had like what 20 million users? this should be a sign to disney that it will make them more money considering that all disney cares about its its ever growing monopoly
