Tamalpais Fire District
‘
In this episode we’ll hear from retired fire chief Bob Sousa as he and host Chief Bill Lellis (ret) talk about the history of the Tamalpais Fire District in Marin County, California.
This unincorporated community is now within the Southern Marin Fire District but Tamalpais, as well as Homestead Valley and Almonte, emerged as volunteer departments from neighborhood improvement groups after WWII.
The population in Marin County grew rapidly and these community groups formed small fire companies to protect their communities. Funds were minimal and some engines were “stationed” in a residential garage.
Chief Sousa recalls memories of his mentors and earlier fire chiefs, Bob Quayle and Stephan Garroway both who worked tirelessly to improve fire protection in their community.
