My current campaign has an artifact very much like this. It was torn apart, and as a result so was the material plane. The players are in the process of collecting the pages that have been scattered across the demi-planes

I love effects like defender of all the earth. Even if they are never used, they impact the players' thinking, creates dramatic tension and gives some really awesome flavor to a character. It's a good resting place for "save or die" mechanics. Congratulations on $2,121,465!

Matt, I don't play like you do. I don't expect I will often implement your rules, I don't think I want warfare in my game very often; it's not something I find super interesting. BUT!!! I do still want your book, because a) maybe I will like these rules better than I anticipate b) I like supporting your work and c) I know that if I don't get it, I'll always wonder what the content is like. So yeah I'm getting it anyways. Once again, congrats Matt

I have something in my Faerlands setting known as the Great Covenant. It is both a peace treaty between the gods as well as defining the gods' domains of influence. It consists of two parts; the Proclamation of Light and the Proclamation of Shadow. It is currently sundered with the parts hidden. Congratulations on breaking the $2mil mark!

I need help! I am a Canadian exchange student currently studying in Japan and in my downtime I try to teach my Japanese friends about dnd as there is almost nobody playing it here, and your content has been invaluable in creating simple interesting adventures which everyone seems to love. I was following this Kickstarter since it was announced and I intended on getting my dad to pledge for the Colvillian level so I could get everything when I would return home. He was hesitant initially because of the price but I insisted that I would pay him back and as more info was released I got even more excited. So with one day left I ask him again to pledge and he says he would, so it being late night for me I go to bed, only to find out in the morning that he put it off for later. Long story short my dad hadn’t been giving it enough attention and now I’m stuck with nothing and the Kickstarter is over. I’m terribly upset because back home I run a mix of 1st and 5th edition and this stuff was right up my alley, does anyone know if I can contact Kickstarter or something to possibly pledge late? Regardless, I’m happy Matt has had such great success and I hope nothing but good continues to come his way.

I understand that these books are still in development, but I think it might be a good idea to invert the wording on the first ability. "If this codex leaves the Mundane World sending a native of this plane unwilling to another plane no longer requires a saving throw." As it reads now the ability seems though it is providing an effect where in actuality it explains a world force. Inverting the description also serves to explain the world function while describing what the actual effect state is.

Super cool! I have a wizard in my campaign and would love to integrate something like this for him! The only thing is they are only 5th level and having something of that power and magnitude seems unlikely to come into their possession. Also, it seems very unlikely that it would stay within their possession. Potentially it is a great plot hook to have a villain meant for a 15th level party steal this from them and begin to wreak havoc with it, but I'd suck to have it given and then taken away for the sake of a plot device. Some other ideas I came up with to mitigate the high level factor of the codexes would be minor codexes. These would grant specialized powers in minor fields like a specific area of a school of magic or bonus effects for various elemental abilities or spells. These would be in addition to a significant knowledge pertaining to that subject and would hold the secrets of those. For example, I liked your idea of a Codex of the Elves which holds information on the true power of elves (allows elves to unlock addition race abilities), their weakness, and their history. A character who has this codex would then wield power over elves, perhaps in the form of a sort of charm spell, which creates a great world dynamic of races seeking to protect this tomes which might have been bestowed to every race and physical place by the creator of the world and act as the definition of that thing, similar to the tablet that defines what gods have what powers in the D&D cosmology. Thanks again Matt!! Wish your book would come out earlier as I'm moving soon and would have to switch my group to online and really want to play with these stronghold ideas. So here's to me adapting something of my own in the meantime!

Not specific to this video but just wanted to say Thank you for everything you've given to this community. I heard you on the Game Dev Unchained podcast and your "anybody can do it" attitude really motivated me. I was wanting to give DnD a stab for years but really apprehensive about trying to start the hobby with no prior experience. Fast forward to 2 weeks later, 7 Welshmen sat at a table fully immersed in a goblin cave having some of the most fun in years, no beers needed! Alcoholic anyway... Root Beer FTW :) A month or so after that I ran a one-shot for one of the player's curious wife who happens to be a secondary school Drama Teacher. She loved it and is now making moves to introduce it to her students in someway. Thanks again, Matt.

You talking about cataclysm reminded me of Critical Role when they used a couple earthquake spell's to destroy Vecna's tower. Yeah the tower was destroyed, but the roof simply floated down unharmed. They didn't have to fight up the tower to get to the roof, but they didn't prevent Vecna from being brought back. A very good example of creative spell use being beneficial but not solving everything.

I suspect the difference between Battle Magic and regular old magic is are of effect. A Fireball or Cone of Cold will probably kill or scatter regular infantry, but not in wide enough area to matter in the context of a pitched battle (the exception being spells like Earthquake, Tsunami and Meteor Swarm, which are basically Battle Magic anyway and should be treated as such). My gut feeling is that Battle Magic maps to spell levels 6-9 if a wizard or sorcerer were to learn it and that it probably does 8-12 dice of damage in a ~500' radius if you were using it outside of a pitched battle.

This. Is. Awsome. Really, the more I heard about this book, the more I wish I pledged more in order to get a physical copy of it T-T the problem of living in Italy is that the price really doubled just for shipping. Anyway... this remind me of something I was planning for my setting. Chronicle of Altea is placed in a dying world that after the first Collision (i.e. it crashed pretty much like what happened in Fringe with other planes of existence) is just crumbling apart. In my first idea, inspired by The Dark Tower, I planned that what hold the fabric of reality was a network of places of power, but making something that the player can hold is probably better :D

You can watch a part of this video (timestamp included) where someone explains the setting for Planescape Torment. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y5DVeah4rMZ5mtkm28s I can recommend Noah Caldwell-Gervais' videos as a gamer, but decide for yourself if you want to subscribe etc. Regardless, from 3m28s it should give you a pretty good explanation what the different planes are (mostly) as his introduction to the game.
@amandadube156
@amandadube156 6 жыл бұрын
What could possibly be confusing about homebrewing a plane? You just pick a theme (an element, faeries, death, etc.) and build a world based on that theme. Of all the things you could homebrew, this seems like one of the most straight forward: no stats, no cr, just imagination & a working pencil.
@Lumpyrox1412
@Lumpyrox1412 6 жыл бұрын
This would be incredibly useful actually. I find all the planes quite daunting, especially as someone who is homebrewing a campaign and feeling like the 5e lore ones are unnecessary.
@amandadube156
@amandadube156 6 жыл бұрын
Lumpyrox you don't necessarily need fully realized planes to play d&d. I've been a steady dm/player for 17ish years and I think I could count the number of times a campaign actually spent substantive time in another plane on one hand
@Lumpyrox1412
@Lumpyrox1412 6 жыл бұрын
@Amanda I guess the reason is that I feel like I want everything to make sense in general terms, even if it's just to me and the party may never explore those planes. As a DM I like having the general knowledge of my world in my head, the reason I DM is because crafting the world deeply excites me.

hey matt wasn't sure where to post this as i'm not on twitter and I missed the kickstarter. so here it is.. you mentioned (stated) that YOUR class/race determines the kind of stronghold you get/build, what about the rest of the party?? i understand that in your experience few players are interested in owning/running a keep/stronghold but my worry is that its very much favouring one player. is it one member of the party who is lord of the keep? or can the whole party sit as a council? do you have to choose one member (or is one member chosen) as the basis for the stronghold choice? can the party choose? would it be possible to have a 'mixed' stronghold? example being a stronghold with a wizards tower (or is that available with upgrades?)

So if a player puts the codex into a bag of holding which is a pocket dimension and I would think not technically on the prime material plane/mundane world... Does Banishment become automatic with no saving throw? Should there be wording that the codex can not be removed from the mundane world without some kind of major effort to prevent players from auto-banishing enemies and then just retrieving the codex so the same thing can not be done to them?
@fakjbf3129
@fakjbf3129 6 жыл бұрын
I think it is the very existence of the codex that creates that rule, not that codex resides on the prime material plane. The codex is so intertwined with the reality of the mundane world that even when it's located in a different plane it is still affecting the prime material plane.
@xixFreedomManxix
@xixFreedomManxix 6 жыл бұрын
One could argue that the pocket dimension created by such magics are held within the plane the bag is located in, and crosses into different planes as the bag travels. And by one could argue, I mean the DM could say.
@The_Mad_Chef78
@The_Mad_Chef78 6 жыл бұрын
I suppose it could be house ruled, but the wording is very specific and says "While this book resides on the Mundane World". That would suggest that if removed to another plane, or dimension, it ceases to guard against banishment
@firekram
@firekram 6 жыл бұрын
The codex is a powerful magic item. As such it should receive the "Cannot contain me" feature. It would read as follows "All spells, magic items, and class abilities that would place the Codex in a pocket plain, dimension, or a space between dimensions or planes (such as the astral plane) simply fail outright." Your familiar cannot carry it out. Your bag of holding will not close with the codex inside. And so on.
@smrhansen
@smrhansen 6 жыл бұрын
That makes sense for stuff like Bags of Holding and Portable Holes, but what about the higher level stuff like Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion, or Demiplane? Seems unreasonable to say "Sorry players, you can't take this one magic item into your mansion. Someone's got to stay outside." I think xixFreedomManxix's idea is better.

Hey Matthew I got an unrelated question but I have been scouring for days for good ways to make custom virtual maps but I'm at a loss for finding a way that I can make a map that I can share with my players and store for later use or editing as we evolve our custom setting as the story and world unfold. I'm excited to receive your book and the dragon minis from kickstarter but no one really has a video for this topic (that I can find) that isn't part of a virtual subscription. We play on a giant white board and I make the boss and puzzle rooms and thats fun for us, I don't want to move 100% virtual I just want to make virtual maps for my players, especially being useful for my mega dungeons if they can find the map pieces on each floor.

With Cataclysm - and other similar battle magic spells - would it be unreasonable to put a "once per week" or "once per month" limit on them so they are more likely to be used in their intended way? This could be built into the lore also, such as "the magic used to cast this spell wrecks havoc on the world in such a way that it cannot be used more than X per X"

Hey Matt, great video - very excited for the supplement. Question for you. Will we be getting a stat block for The Phoenix in the Codex?

On Defender of All The Earth, does once mean that the druid can only use that ability once, or does it mean that the book can only do it once? (as in it only has one charge) If it is once per druid, is there a delay before the next druid can use the book?

Would you please put the streams you make on saturdays to youtube? Because sometimes it fixates the video at 1080p 60fps and I cant watch it due to my computer's performance. It cant handle that high resolution.
