Great job Scott!!! I remember going to see the Ship as a kid. There are really a lot of places like that along The Lincoln Highway. Just east of York on route 30, you can see The Shoe House. I haven't had luck of it being open when I tried to go in the past, or if it is still open. They sold ice cream out of it. It was actually on an episode of The Amazing Race too. Maybe something you can check out when you get down that way.

Really neat stuff. I don't know what that Pinnochio Pied Piper things was at the end of my video. Thunderstorm was really bad as I was coming out of another site location and I saw it and thought... Looks like the "preservation" is coming to an end. Just read an article that it is being turned into something for food distribution... which means it will have to follow "code".

They did a nice job on that. Back in the late 90s I drove beer truck and right next to it was kase beverage. I used to look in the broken windows the floor and roof were falling in. I was so happy to see years later it was moved and restored.
@ODDySEEy4 жыл бұрын
I saw some of the pictures of when it was really deteriorated. It is rather amazing that they were able to move it and restore it. Unlike its previous location where there is now a bank (which speaks volumes on what was going on when they were going to knock it down) it sits back just far enough off the road that you could easily drive past it and never know it was there.

In 1886, Charley Hall discovered a way of smelting Aluminum out of Bauxite in his kitchen in Oberlin Ohio. 2 years later, he founded the Pittsburgh Reduction Company with Alfred Hall in 1888, which became the became the Aluminum Company of America (1907). Wear-Ever Aluminum was developed and sold as cooking and camping utensils. The earliest photographs of the Coffee Pot promoted the Finest Coffee on the Lincoln Highway as being made by Wear-Ever Aluminum.

If you are capable and able, see as many of these sites as you can. Taking the back road is always a better options than the faster commercial roads of life. You should head to York Pa and do a video on the Haines Dhoe House. I live a mere 5 miles from it and it's just always been there. I drive past it almost everyday.
@ODDySEEy3 жыл бұрын
It is on my list... I try to do a rotation around where I live. I also try to not do locations that are too popular, mainly because it interferes with the recordings, but also because they are often "pay for" sites and I do not want them using my videos for their profit. Haines Shoe house is not just a pay site, but also gives you a "tour", which is great. But one thing that almost EVERY "pay for" "tour" site has in common is the act of not telling the Facts, Truth, or History... they tend to tell you things that will cause you to tell other people to come and visit. (NOT SAYING THAT HAINES SHOE HOUSE WILL OR DOES DO THAT... I don't know yet). BUT... it is on my list... so we WILL find out eventually.

@@ODDySEEy I live 5 miles from the Shoe House and drive past it almost everyday. For me. It's just always been there. The current owner sadley passed away in I think 2018 or early 2019. Her husband and family still run it in her honor. She actually researched the history and in the Ice Cream there are photos of its construction. When I was little it was painted white with a black soul. Like a baby shoe. In her research found out it was originally painted tan. With a brown soul. I've been there quite a few times under diffrent owners since I've been little. I'm 50 now and my latest visit was in August 2019. It still looks great. I myself have been going to Somerset County all my life going through or around Bedford many times heading out to Meyersdale Pa for the Pennsylvania Maple Festival and I never knew the large Coffee Pot was in Bedford. So now that is on my list to visit. My parents grew up in Meyersdale and i still have lots of family out that way.

Are you talking about the “ship hotel” , I was in the place many times from the mid 50’s -the late 70’s , it was really nice you could see 3states , and 7 counties , from up on upper deck , they had good food, and what can remember they a gift shop , and a bar too , but sometime in the mid 80’s in went into decline , the people , tried to sell it but couldn’t get , what they wanted for it , then a little later , “jewishlighting “ struck it and it 🔥 burned to the ground , It should have been restored , as it was a historical land mark. It used to have a gas station , and a caged bear ,on the other side of rt.30 , back in the 30’s or 40’s , but it was a nice place !

Thanks for the sub and that is awesome that you live that close. All too often we get use to seeing our own back yards and forget what is actually sitting right in front of us. As a native born and raised Philadephian, I did not realize what we had (even after numerous tours and historical walks) until I left. Now I look forward to telling a lot of the "proper" history of Philly with the things you will find right along the streets... so much more than being the original capital city. As for the "beer" bug, it is absolutely shameful what has been canceled. Almost like someone wants us to totally forget who we once were and become something different that no longer cares.

Interesting side fact, the phrase "Cup O'Joe" was a Naval Phrase from WW I, when the 1913 Secretary of the Navy, Josephus Daniels, decided to prohibit alcohol aboard any naval vessels. Coffee intake increased greatly because it was the strongest drink on the ships. That with a bunch of men who were use to having whiskey and beer at the end of the day going through alcohol withdraw symptoms, created the derogatory saying of, "I am going to the mess to get a cup of... Joe". ;)
