As always, Peter takes some interesting information and jumps to sweeping, totally unrelated conclusions. How could America realistically impose a commercial marine traffic, naval blockade on Russia? Russia has one of the largest, most capable submarine fleets in the world. It is the only submarine fleet that causes great concern for the American navy. For the last forty years the U.S. Navy has been focused on how to cope with it. The Russians know better than anyone how vulnerable any surface fleet they tried to field would be. Hence, they don't really try. Unlike the Americans who spend massive amounts of money on ships that are useless in a real war. The American carriers can't get within striking distance of either Russia or China if those countries decide not to allow it.

@@StarsManny I don't know. While Russia's naval fleet has not been maintained to anywhere near the level of ours, and we have a much better passive acoustic detection network buried in the oceans, so much depends on strategy and stealth. Also, if we got into a hot war with Russia, a LOT more than just subs would be involved. The only scenario that comes to mind where a fight with Russia included naval warfare would be if Russia attacked NATO and included naval assets in the attack. In that case, all of NATO is involved and all the coast heading down from the Arctic (where most of Russia's navy resides) are NATO countries - Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France, United Kingdom. Many of these countries have navies and some subs. They also collectively dominate the coast. It seems to me, Russia is at a severe disadvantage. P.S. A fascinating book on declassified U.S. submarine activities, especially those involved in spy/espionage is entitled "Blind Man's Bluff" www.amazon.com/Blind-Mans-Bluff-Submarine-Espionage/dp/1610393589 It has some hair raising stories.

I'm not sure that the Russian surface fleet has been taken all that seriously for quite a while. The submarine fleet is something of an unknown quantity. If a significant proportion of it is functional then it remains a potent force in the Atlantic and in the Pacific. If, on the other hand, the crew training and ship maintenance mirrors that of the surface fleet.... well let's just say that coastal defence is probably the best it can achieve. (Apart, presumably, from their SSBN's.)

@@AtlITGuy There's an agreement (Monreaux Convention) that Turkey oversees, and they will not allow any warships to transit into the Black Sea for the most part. PER the agreement, during a time of "war", only navies that are on the Black Sea can return to their "homeport". This is why Russia hasn't reinforced their navy there. They actual requested in 2022, that their ships be allowed to enter the Black Sea, and 3+ ships (Cruiser, Destroyer, and support) waited for 9 months for permission, but Turkey said NO! Plus didn't Russia lose their "homeport" of Sevastopol for the most part? So using your theory, why hasn't Russia declare war in Fall of 2022 when Turkey said "NO..we are just going to blockade you from entering". Sounds like Russia was "blockaded" since the start of the war.... What else do you call when you restrict access? I think Peter was really saying that "NATO has the Russian Navy by the ball$" as they have to transit through water that for the most part is controlled by them. Of course you are forgetting strategic nuclear submarines, which are based in Murmansk (Northern Fleet) and Vladisvostok (Pacific Fleet) - so, I wouldn't be jumping to conclusions that Russian Navy has collapsed. Also, neither Baltic or Black Sea Fleet were really considered as any "serious" force by people who are familiar with the Russian Navy. Cheers !

Also, when speaking about trading there wasn't even a mention of the 30+ (and still growing) Ice Breakers fleet which will be providing the new shortest naval route for trading and turning the Suez canal into an inferior option.

A discussion of the Russian Navy without discussing their submarine fleet strikes me as somewhat incomplete, especially since their torpedoes are the largest, fastest and longest range in the world.

Random thought: I know Peter likes to hate on the Soviets I mean the Russians and they're challenges. But is there an equivalent analyst for either China or Russia that hates on the US and describes our challenges? I think it would be really interesting to see prop again that they come up with.

There is plenty of people describing the problems of the US. But you will usually find them WITHIN the US. And a bit on the fringes, since they don't get money or promotions for realism.

It's funny when you said the French can't build a canal. Even though this is not what you meant. For those who don't know, the French tried to build the Panama Canal and failed! Then the United States stepped in and said Hold My Beer.

@@esotericcommonsense6366 I viewed it as "France is too big to build a canal in/through", as opposed to say, the Panama canal.
@theylied1776 Жыл бұрын
@@esotericcommonsense6366Yep! But the Panama Canal was an engineering challenge. The Suez was not a challenge at all. The terrain was flat. With enough time, manpower, and funding anyone could have done that. In Panama, you had to deal with disease, bandits, and mountainous terrain. First, the United States sent in the Army to deal with the lawlessness. Then they sent in doctors to control the disease. Then the engineers were sent in. The French gave up after they were attacked. As someone said, "another example of PZ and his fanboys being historically illiterate".

@@maxpower3990 while I don't agree that the US and brits won WW2. We lost the winter war, thats why the fins joined germany in 1941 against USSR.
