@@felixbaby1234 // it was not an election, it was a Statehood Yes/No referendum. It must also be said that the US had Stated that the referendum was unilateral created by the Pro Statehood Government in Power and that it had no validity. The US has continually Stated that the issue of referendum must be inclusive to all alternatives of decolonization. I hope That your doubts are clarified.

🇪🇸The Maritime letters of Christopher Columbus, written in Castellano language, are exact proof of his landing at Güánica's Bay; Other items, like an engraved wood block offers an exact picture of that unique Bay. The Natives of the island were extremely friendly, and the TAINO's village, in Güanica, were well described in other letters. The advantages that Columbus found in Güánica, are the same that U.S.A Navy found there. A perfect Bay, with Fresh water, food, and high mountains at the entrance, protecting the ships from strong winds and perfect for hiding them from the open Sea view. This Bay was an ancient Route of Phoenician Merchants, from the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, ISRAEL, and because Christopher Columbus was having a Jewish background, he knew this very well... I wouldn't mind seeing a video on that. However I would like to note that after growing up Puerto Rican and constantly hearing about the torture my family members endured at the hands of the U.S., I wouldn't necessarily jump to making us a state... I've never actually met any Puerto Rican that wanted P.R. to be a state other than for financial reasons like receiving money to deal with hurricane Maria and the ability to declare bankruptcy.

Thank you so much for making this video! I was born in Vieques and I remember how my sister and I would wait for the Navy trucks full of trash, guns, bullets and food, by then Vieques had an open land were they would take all the trash no security just open to the public and we would pick up everything we could and eat the food and sale the rest of the stuff we found. So many memories. I now thank God we never got hurt. Thanks so much for making this video!

Puerto Rico has a very rich history that few Puerto Ricans know about unless they look it up on the Internet. The only thing most Puerto Ricans know is the discovery by Columbus, few know that Puerto Ricans helped the colonies in the US get their Independence the same Independence which they now denounce our right to have.

I think Puerto Rico should become independent their people, music and culture are worth being their own nation and they are very proud of being puerto rican. The only part that would be bad is losing the U.S. citizenship but at the cost of freedom is worth it

An all democratic government allows the potential for constitutional amendments to be passed. All of the diaspora should recognized this opportunity and push for an end to American colonialism/imperialism. PR is one of many U.S. (stolen) property. Excellent work Bianca!

Very informative and eye opening regarding the history of an island off of Puerto Rico I knew so little about. Puerto Rico has always held a place in my heart as me being Cuban y esta isla del encanto is the closest I have to a connection to Cuba; as it being similar in its history and geography through el Caribe. Thank you for the intellectual awareness, hope to see Cuba covered as well too if possible !

Puerto Rico wasn't a Spanish colony in 1898. Puerto Rico had representation in the Congress of Spain, with the third most representatives out of all provinces and had just become the first autonomous community of Spain with the "Carta Autonómica". How do you call that a colony ? Puerto Rico was as spaniard as Andalusia or the Canary Islands.

Fantastic presentation! 22 Trillion dollar economy and we can't find the money necessary to make Puerto Rico whole again along with giving it the foundation it needs to be self majority sustaining. If you've ever been to PR and have a functioning heart, you understand--on many levels, how little Puertorricanos ask for--and how much they receive relative to what they are owed and deserve, from the US government. It is shameful that Puerto Rico is still treated so unjustly. It is time for Puerto Rico to either become a state or sovereign. I want to move to Puerto Rico as a citizen. My dreams seem crushed because I don't want to take advantage of access to Puerto Rico because my government owns it. That is kinda sick. Sigh!

My maternal grandparents were from vieques. They mourned the fact they had to leave their hometown until the day they died. I served in the navy also, vieques problems are 3 fold. 1. Transportation, residents are slaves of the ferry that is run by the state. Once they arrive in the big island, they are at the mercy of public transportation. This makes it difficult to conduct business. Also this limits what is available on the island for goods and services. 2. Work, related to the first reason. Their is few employment opportunities and that keeps people poor and dependent of the government. 3. Political, no governor has seriously tried to develop vieques to bring the town into the 21st century. What can save vieques is a bridge to the big island. In the world we have longer bridges built in deeper water. It’s not imposible. Also you have people in town who profit from keeping fast food , supermarket and retail chains out. The navy was an inconvenience, but 20 years later that land remains unused. Vieques can be developed for manufacturing, small farming, cruise liner destination, resorts. This can bring a bigger economic activity. And make vieques a desirable place to move to. My family lived there 100 years.

I had never heard about the history or politics of Puerto Rico while in school or college. Of cause it’s all about the Civil war and wars of the USA against other countries to protect our freedom and interest. I feel ashamed for the lack of understanding of the US Navy taking over Vieques. My thinking was that Puerto Rico was a strategic area in the Caribbean serving the best military interest for our country. Actually our liberal media talked about the Puerto Rican being an obstacle to the military, trying to drive the Navy out of Puerto Rico. They did not talk about the injustice of the military to the island and it’s people. Reality set in as you gave this historic presentation. I live in Texas and people down in the south are very patriotic. It is all about the red, white and blue, and supporting the military to keep our freedom as “Americans.” Sadly, not everyone in America has knowledge as to the unjust and disrespect given to those living in areas that the USA has colonized (American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and Hawaii now a state). Puerto Ricans meant NOTHING to the US Military. It’s those “radical Puerto Rican” who scarified their lives against the injustice done in Puerto Rico that are the true HEROES in our island. Your videos should be watched by ALL Americans so that they could understand why the “Yankee- go- Home” is echoed by many in Puerto Rico. My wife is anglo and she is not aware of a lot of these historic and shameful events imposed on the people of Puerto Rico by the US Government. She is getting a better understanding, respect, appreciation and why the patriotism of our people. Muchas gracias por todo lo que estas haciendo para todo nosotros. Dios te bendiga.

I grew up in Humacao and remember seeing the flares over the island of Vieques, during Naval exercises. The theory behind the reason the US invaded PR in 1898 is something call the Monroe doctrine (after President James Monroe) though it really was an opportunity added by the person that broker the agreement between Spain and the US.

Very informative video. Thank you...learned a lot from it. The reality is Puerto Rico has always been treated as a "step child" whether it was occupied by Spain or The U.S. Statehood would benefit the island in many ways but it would be a serious "investment" for the U.S. My concern is the island would be gentrified and many of it's poor pushed out to make way for the wealthy coming from the mainland. Although the island would experience some very rough "beginnings"...I do believe Independence is what Puerto Rico should strive for if it wants control of it's destiny and respect. Although that is a decision that should be left strictly to the people of Puerto Rico who LIVE in Puerto Rico.

I'm from America, I love our country, I love our freedom, I just hate how we obtained all of it. We are pretty much bullies, we take what we want, and we get it, I don't agree with it. I really believe puertocians Should have the same rights as I do. As the Indians do. I believe the government should treat this country just like we treat Indians.

My parents Benito and Ramona were born in Ponce and tho I've always identified myself as Puerto Rican didn't know much about Puerto Rico's history until much later in my life. A 10-25 year plan of statehood transition to Soverign nation. While doing this the US gives reparations to PR’s and sets our island on a path of self sustainability.

CORRECTION. Is commonly said that PR was a colony of Spain in 1898. The island was an overseas province with autonomy and currency with gold to back it up deposited in the Bank of Sevilla. The reason for the invasion was to avoid the commercial competition PR would represent by absorbing most of the commerce that was going to cross the Panama Canal. Washington is robbing our sacred right to engage in commerce with the rest of the world. The Jones Act

As an American and honorably retired member of US Army forces that has trained in Puerto Rico (shout out to Campo Santiago, Salinas, and Roosevelt Roads NAS) I am shocked by these revelations and ashamed that Congress has not yet made amends to Puerto Rico. PR should immediately be elevated to full statehood w full voting rights.

As American I am sorry on how United States government treats Puerto Rico at times such as Donald trump. I truly hope incoming President joe Biden and Kamala Harris will treat Puerto Rico with respect and treat you guys right. According to news recently that 52 percent of people who live in Puerto Rico choose statehood. There are pros and cons between statehood and independent. As American I am honor having people like you that live in Puerto Rico as fellow American citizens. I hope in future that Puerto Rico and United States come to compromise for better future. Would you like to stay as United States territory or become statehood or be independent? I know that I am honor to have you as fellow American. I hope someday that people in Puerto Rico have best of both worlds as American and Puerto Rico. I truly believe that every American and every person in Puerto Rico can make United States and Puerto Rico better places to live. I believe in hope.

Hi Bianca. Thanks for your informative video. It would be interesting to document also treatment of other US territories, for example, Guam and the US Virgin Islands, among other territories. Another possible subject for another video would be why the Puerto Rican culture has been so resilient after 120 years of US domination as compared to 500 years of Spanish influence and rule on the island. Mind blown, You taught a 58 yr old man that it’s written into the US constitution that Puerto Rico will never be sovereign under the US because it is a property of the US. This presents a choice that we as a people must make for ourselves. True independence or colonialism, choose.

But don't forget to tell them about how we have to pay more for all our services because of the Jones Act and also how some of the richest Americans are moving here to take advantage of certain tax breaks like act 20-22 but are NOT complying with our laws and have NOT been donating their legally dictated amounts to non profits in PR. As a Puerto Rican born on the island and raised mostly in the US, I suddenly came to realize that I didn’t know enough about my home country despite my overflowing love and pride for it, so I decided to do some research. To find your videos has been one of the most heartbreaking things for me. To learn and know that this entire time I was living perfectly happy in the states, my grandparents and the rest of my family were living under these inhumane rules and simply didn’t tell me. I learned recently that they discussed these things with my parents who were raised on the island, but I guess they didn’t want me to know yet. I’ve been oblivious to the problems that my home country has been facing and I’ve never felt more ashamed.

Many people forget that another man who also showed solidarity with Vieques was Felix Tito Trinidad in the biggest fight of his career against De la hoya. He used the spotlight of one of the biggest stages in the sport of boxing to deliver that classic moment.

Bianca, Great video on the history of the US Military in Puerto Rico. Like I said before I was born in Santurce parada #17. I ask my mom regarding the history and she is under the understanding that Americans help us in the war against Spain. I think you need set record straight. Spain gave Puerto Rico to the USA after their invasion. There was no war with the USA helping us with Spain. I believe the Americans changed the history in the school books for their benefit. Thank you for hard work and keep bring light to the dark history of " la isla del elcanto" .

Great reporting! Minor note, states can't file for bankruptcy. Puerto Rico's bankruptcy is the first of it's kind in US history, and is considered as a case study by Congress for what a state bankruptcy could potentially look like or be resolved. Currently, there are several states that are over leveraged financially, so the potential for a default from another state is highly probable... continue with the great work and best wishes!
