When I was a kid, my sibling and I decided we wanted to grow our own watermelons, so we saved seeds for a few weeks and planted them in the front garden…and it worked! We named our little melon Stan and cared for him and watered him and he was about the size of a football when we showed him to Carl, the boy across the street. And then…Carl plucked Stan off the vine and dropped him in the middle of the road. Carl was a jerk.

Watermelon is one of those fruits that I really like, but feel like it’s very lacking and watery when I get them from the store. I really need to try some home grown or high quality grown melons fresh, because that would probably be huge for my appreciation of the fruit.

We can find these grown by the organic gardeners for maybe a week or so in August. They used to sell for about $5, rather small melon. They call them a yellow doll here and they're super sweet, nicer than the red ones, really juicy. I love them, but have only had a few.
