Cool episode. It great to see how much you enjoy working with the guys. Practices were always my favorite part of coaching, the aspect of the job you will look back on fondly

Whetmore’s guys would have just done a hard 10 and then gone on to kick everyone’s butts.

“You don’t need speed in cross country” very interesting take to me. what about kicking? My belief is that you gotta do speed year round. Because it’s not gonna hurt you and you’re gonna be really well set up for kicking in xc and the 800m & 1600m in track.
@jackphieffer645Ай бұрын
overloading on strength naturally gives you that kick at the end of the race due to you not being as tired as others. Also these top runners in the nation already have natural speed so speed workouts aren’t as necessary for them.

@@jackphieffer645 thats good thinking 👍

Kicking is actually dependent on your strength, doesnt matter how fast you are if you get burnt out
@eliputnammАй бұрын
@@turnerburger yeah i think i agree. however i still think speed is good to do all year round bc it will make you stronger and if you only do a little bit you’ll still see a bunch of benefits
@ironeyes4882Ай бұрын
Nah, you need basic leg speed from things like strides but you don't need track speed.

Carlsen clearly doesn’t understand lactate. How do you assign the whole team at 2.5 and not individualize at all? Super embarrassing for a school like Colorado. Sloppy blood testing as well.
@kennygoodwin9322Ай бұрын
Idk a ton about testing and how to do it 100% but he seemed to really only test a certain couple guys who probably have proper testing done. It does sound like though that he’s only doing it because it’s trendy versus doing it right
@haucksАй бұрын
Because no one has an LT2 below 2.5. Its a very conservative number that makes sure no one is going above threshold. Most 5k/10k runners have an LT2 of 3.5 to 4. Marathoners and long distance triathletes may have a lower LT2 of around 3.
@TitusBishop-u7gАй бұрын
@@haucks It is a conservative number and will lead to getting threshold pace wrong most of the time. It’s embarrassing. He would be better off assigning paces from a TT.
@keeganreynolds1959Ай бұрын
@@haucks guys who are this well trained aerobically will typically see LT2 values at 2.0-2.5, although it is individual and has some daily variation
@jacobbart3905Ай бұрын
I would be curious to know if they take a base lactate reading of the athletes before the workout starts
@tundra77Ай бұрын
they likely have done testing in the past or they are going by the general 2.5mmol rule

Carlson is not a genius tbh. He folded at Tennessee despite having 30 men on his roster and think abt how many pros came out of his coaching. Just two. Yared and Dylan Jacobs
